My Top 10 Roguelike Card Games

    Posted: 16 Feb 2022 11:31 AM PST

I must confess… I'm a roguelike card game junkie. Unfortunately, due to the increasing popularity of this genre, there are TONS of low-effort roguelike card games that are regularly released on the App Store. It can be pretty difficult to sort through all of them. That's why I've decided to share My Top 10 Roguelike Card Games with you all!

For those who may be interested, I also made a short video that provides gameplay and more information about each individual game. It's entirely optional but you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/MZ6_QxfjZ9M

Alright, let's get right into it!

———————————————————————————— My Top 10 Roguelike Card Games (In No Particular Order)

    1. Void Tyrant: This game utilizes Black Jack-like mechanics within its battle system. It also has a huge variety of classes, abilities, enemies, and bosses to encounter. Its art style, music, sound effects, and UI design are very polished.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/void-tyrant/id1385870381

    1. Slay The Spire: This is the granddaddy of all roguelike card games. It has distinct classes, tons of unlockables, and super interesting enemies/bosses. It's a must-buy game in this genre while providing endless bang for your buck. Do yourself a favor and get it if you haven't already.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/slay-the-spire/id1491530147

    1. Cards of Terra: This one requires you to layer cards on top of one another (similar to solitaire) to eventually clear the entire board of cards. Cards are creatures that come in different colors, types, and powers. There are also different gameplay modes on offer that play off of these mechanics.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cards-of-terra/id1520013966

    1. Meteorfall: Journey and Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale: I couldn't choose between them so I'm including both games in this list. Meteorfall: Journey uses Tinder-like mechanics to swipe left or right to select various combat actions, cards, and choices. It's super intuitive. Krumit's Tale has more of a board game feel where there is a board of different cards. These cards can consist of items, enemies, traps, etc. You must interact with them in the order that you see fit. Despite being from the same developer, each game has a flavor all of its own.

Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/meteorfall-journey/id1269922212 Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/meteorfall-krumits-tale/id1369611597

    1. Dark Mist: This game has a unique twist with how it handles your health. The number of cards in your deck determines your amount of health. When enemies attack you, they take cards from your deck. You must kill those enemies to get your cards back. It also has a fantastic dark fantasy theme.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dark-mist/id1516045248

    1. Solitairica: I consider this to be one of the roguelike card game classics of the App Store. It uses some of the basic rules of solitaire in its combat scenarios. There is a ton classes to play as, all with their own unique play styles. This is one of the most replayable games on the list, in my opinion.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/solitairica/id970202342

    1. Tavern Rumble: This blends basic roguelike card game mechanics with a tactical and strategic twist. You place cards (units) on a grid during battle in order to defend, attack, and utilize abilities. I've never seen anything quite like it in this genre before and it's still one of my favorites to this day.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tavern-rumble/id1553018047

    1. Dawncaster: This one is probably one of the best looking and sounding roguelike card games on the App Store. It places an emphasis on RPG elements, such as entire skill trees dedicated to each individual class. The longer you play it, the more it sets itself apart.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dawncaster-deckbuilding-rpg/id1555459868

    1. Card Thief: This game utilizes a board of randomized cards that can be traps, enemies, treasure, and various other things. You strategically maneuver your thief throughout the board while collecting as much treasure as possible.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/card-thief/id1186226470

    1. Dungeon Reels: This game uses slot machine mechanics during combat. You can add new symbols to your slot machine over time that consist of attacks, spells, and defensive maneuvers. It doesn't necessarily use "cards" but it plays exactly like a roguelike card game while mixing in more luck/strategy.

    Link To Game: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dungeon-reels/id1600553308

    ————————————————————————————

I hope this list has proven useful to those of you who took the time to read it! This genre is so vast and it feels like I'm discovering new games within it every single day!

If your favorite roguelike card game didn't appear in this list, please share it in the comments below! Feel free to also provide your thoughts about any of the games in this list! The more, the merrier! I'm looking forward to your inputs!

    Cheers!

What are your favorite tactical pvp games?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2022 06:44 PM PST

Team based I've played all MOBAs and it's getting a bit stale, I'm waiting for something new for that genre.

1v1 I've also played some Lego Star Wars Battles and Clash Royale but it gets boring pretty quick it's just too repetitive.

    What else should I try?

The Top 10 iOS Battle Royale Games of 2022 (my research and predictions)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2022 03:07 AM PST

tl;dr 1 - There are not as many Battle Royale Games coming this year as the other categories, but there are still some really good ones coming. It was a lot of fun doing this research. Hope you guys enjoy. Here is my list for this years Top 10 Battle Royale Games of 2022: Apex Legends, King of Hunters, H1Z1, Super People, PubG: New State, Final Fantasy 7 First Soldier, Happy Zone - Battle Royale, Mini Golf: Battle Royale, CODM, and Zombs Royale (Extras: Valorant, Survival Heroes, Butter Royale) (I give my reasons for choosing each one, so if one of these confuses you, make sure to read the post before raging 😂)

tl;dr 2 - I made all of this with game footage into a short HQ video here https://youtu.be/1Ak9is0L1A4

Update on the original video for those that care; it now has over 180k view in less than 7 weeks. I credit a lot of this success to Reddit and the feedback I have gotten from this community. So thank you! https://youtu.be/7-TakjaKy30

But for those of you who rather read, here is the video script:

Battle Royale is one of, if not the most, popular game type on the Phone. With Apex Legends getting released early this next summer, it should be a good year for players that like the genre, and there are actually several more 2022 battle royales very few know about.

The first and best Battle Royale of 2022 is Apex Legends. This game also got the top spot in the top 10 list overall because for the last four years of mobile gaming, battle royale shooter computer game ports have been in the top three favorites for serious mobile gamers. Apex Legends has everything those other games had and more. The battle royale game mode fits really well with the mobile phone because the player only has to commit to 25 minutes at a time and mobile gaming continues to explode so each year offers a bigger player base. But in addition to working with more players, Apex has a focus on characters with unique skills which is surprisingly lacking in mobile shooters right now. Lastly, Apex is going to be released at a time when it isn't competing with many other huge names of the same genre so it should be able to monopolize on the hype. The exact release date has not been announced yet, but they did say it will be in the third quarter of this year.

The second game is King of Hunters. Netease has been working on this game for 4 years and it is still in a closed beta, but it looks like it will finally come out this year! The reason I think it will do well is because it is Battle royale which as I said earlier, works well on the phone and it is a top down view which pairs well with both the size and capabilities of the phone's touchscreen. It also has several things that make the game unique. It is a combination of Battle Royale with MOBA, which surprisingly works really well. The time frame of the game types are similar and the aspect of leveling up really helps prevent someone from winning that spent the whole game hiding. The second unique aspect of this game is that it has two story buildings that you can jump off to attack other players. You can also get bonuses for attacking people from hiding which is a fun twist on an aspect of Battle Royale that many players like.

The third game is H1Z1 Mobile. I am a little less sure about this game because the devs don't release a lot of updates on how the mobile version is going, but based on other projects like it, the game should be released this year and when it does, it should be a big hit because the devs have a lot of things going for them. First, h1z1 is the classic with the first version of Battle Royale and classics often start out with player loyalty even from players that have never played the game. Second, h1z1 is putting a heavy emphasis on cars, which is not only unique, but the Mechanics for car driving on the mobile phone has gotten a lot better in the last 3 years so they should be able to do something good with it. Now I do have a few concerns that they will be able to pull this off well because shooting from a car that someone else is driving is really difficult, but if they're able to pull it off, it should be a lot of fun. And then lastly, H1Z1 seems to do a pretty good job of advertising their game which of course helps mobile games a lot.
The fourth game on the list is Super People. I am not convinced that this game is coming out on mobile this year, but the devs have expressed plans to make the mobile version and this is a really exciting game so I want it on the list just in case. One of the things I like the most about this game is that everyone is given a random character every time they play so players are forced to adapt to whatever they are given. And these characters range in all kinds of powers from teleporting, a flamethrower, summoning cars, super jumping and more. So the concept might seem like an Apex Legends at first or might look kind of like a PUBG, but it is really not at all like any of them. This game is going to take the best of the great battle royale games while feeling like something completely new and refreshing.
The fifth game is PUBG: New State. The hype for this game is naturally already going down because it has been out for a few months, but it is just a solid Battle Royale. The game has great graphics, it's 2051 theme makes everything look so good, and they kept the best of pubg so that it keeps the classic feel. That being said, it really isn't that much different. It is kind of like the developers had a bunch of quality updates they wanted to add to the original and then decided to reskin the game to make a new one. A lot of serious PUBG players have switched over because of these great changes, but it is essentially just a better PUBG with a more modern theme.

The sixth game is Final Fantasy 7 First Soldier. This game just came out recently as well and I was so excited about it. In fact, I might have put this game at the top because the game has so many amazing unique elements to it like their implementation of melee, ranged and magic, shapeshifting and summoning combat. And they made it to where classes amplify the efficacy of those different forms of fighting so that every opponent would be completely unique. This type of diversity in opponents is unprecedented in the battle royale genre and would have easily gotten them a higher spot on this list. And it was f2p friendly so the game was easily positioned for a top spot in this genre, but when it launched, it had a lot of really serious issues. The first one was that you would randomly disconnect in the middle of playing for no reason and it wouldn't let you back in the game until your character had left that match. There were also times when people would report spending over 20 minutes in a waiting room to try to match. They also had issues with their transactions so you couldn't buy things or they would change the battle pass in the middle of a season without giving players enough warning. So all of these changes are things that can easily be fixed and actually most of them have already been fixed, but the biggest problem with the game is that it was never truly balanced. Getting on a chocobo and fighting from it was an easy way to get an advantage, but even with normal fighting, magic was and still is significantly overpowered thus destroying the very diversity that made this game so exciting. Now of course this too is something they can fix and if they do, this game will stand as an exciting new addition to Mobile gaming.
The seventh game on the list is Happy Zone - Battle Royale. This game just came out and has less than 10k downloads, but it is pretty fantastic if you like different forms of the battle royale game mode. The game is a pretty simple small scale battle royale using brawl stars like game graphics and mechanics and it is really addicting. Now this game was never in beta and therefore does not have an established player base so I do not know yet if you can reach the top as a free to play player, but my best guess is that you can. It has a free to play way to get a battle pass and earn every type of currency in the game. Now f2p players definitely have a disadvantage starting off, but I actually enjoy when games do that because it makes the enjoyment of catching up to them later all the more satisfying. So if you are looking for a casual battle royale game then this is my top choice and if you like the style of game and want to play competitively to reach the top, then I think you will like this game, but there is obviously a bid astrix there.
The eighth game is Mini Golf: Battle Royale. Now you might think that I am just running out of new battle royale games for me to put this one on here and you are technically right, but this game is actually really good for what it is. If you like the battle royale style and you also like physics type games, this is the best there is out there. The game is legitimately competitive, there are so many maps with intriguing obstacles, and upgrading your gear is fun, but not such a big deal to make the game pay to win. That being said, some people are so much better at this game than me that it makes me wonder if there are hackers. Now there aren't any reviews saying this so I am probably just really bad at the game, but some of them are so freakin good it makes me wonder and since this game is brand new and was also never in a beta test, I have no way of finding out for sure yet.

The ninth game on the list is Call of Duty Mobile. This game is obviously not new, but sadly, I have run out of new games that I think will get hype for the Battle Royale genre. Call of Duty's battle royale mode is to many the best that mobile gaming has to offer. It focuses on the things that count the most like great graphics, minimal lag, reducing hackers, and the devs show that they are listening to the community in their updates. Now don't get me wrong, the game has problems, but what game doesn't? It has become a staple to mobile gaming and if you like battle royale shooters and haven't tried Call of Duty Mobile, you are missing out.

The last game is Zombs Royale. This is another game that is not new, but it is still a great choice because it is a unique take on battle royale with it's 2 dimensional top down view and it works really well with the phone. You can play solo, duos, or in a squad and the matchmaking is decent. A traditional match starts with 100 players and ends with 1 winner, but the game also has several other game modes and maps. One of these is Zombies mode which has all of the elements of a standard battle royale game, but everyone is also attacked by hordes of zombies so PVP is not your only fear. The game is easy to learn, but hard to master and has over 1000 cosmetic changes you can make to your avatar.

Ok, so those are the top 10 Mobile Battle Royales for 2022, but I do have 3 more honorable mentions for you.
The first one is Survival Heroes. This game was the original MOBA Battle Royale and it was fantastically done. When it first came out, it opened my eyes to the potential of mobile gaming and a big reason I started arguing that Mobile games would take over gaming while most of the other gamers ridiculed it. It has been a strange satisfaction to watch them all change their minds over the years. Regardless, this game is amazing. It has sometimes suffered from the devs' neglecting it, but if you like MOBA and Battle Royale, it is my #1 recommendation… at least until King of Hunters comes out.

The second honorable mention is Valorant Mobile. There is a lot of hype for this game, but I simply do not think it will come out this year. I could be wrong on that, but Riot games would have to work much faster than other game companies do to get it out that fast and based on how long it took them to release Wild Rift, I don't think there is a strong chance of that happening.

Lastly, I wanted to mention Butter Royale. This game is the #1 battle royale game on Arcade but since that is iOS exclusive, it has not made it to my main list, but for this Reddit, I would HIGHLY recommend checking it out. A map holds up to 32 players and the games are only 5 minute long as people shoot sauce and throw bread at each other until everyone is eliminated.
Well, that's it guys. Hope that helps. If a game is not on here that you think should be on here, it is probably because I put it in a different genre like perhaps shooters or something else. Some of those videos are already out and the rest will be out very soon.

Alright guys, I'll see you next time.

    Any games like slaughter?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2022 05:49 PM PST

Downloaded this about a month ago when it was free, finally decided to try it. I love it so far, but the controls on controller are SO WACK. Literally, I have to press Y to aim, and the right trigger to shoot, both very close to each other. wtf is up with that? It's so uncomfortable and different from the usual L2 to aim and R2 to shoot. I can't figure out how to reload, so I have to tap the gun when I want to, and then it faces me in a totally different direction than the enemies. This game is cool nonetheless, I'm glad I got it for free. Are there any others like it?

Trying to find an old game where you made movies?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2022 07:22 AM PST

This popped up so randomly in my head and I've been scouring my old purchase list but I can't find it!!

It was a game where I'm pretty sure you were a director? And you made movies, you would like choose a genre and actors and they had their own stats that would impact the reviews your movies would get.

I think it had pretty cool graphics and you would unlock genres/actors in like a trading card kind of fashion.

That's kind of all I remember??

If anyone knows what the hell I'm talking about plssss let me know I'll love u forever

LF Pokemon Idle/ Knockoff Games on IOS

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 09:32 PM PST

I've been on the mad hunt for an idle pokemon game similar to something like Nonstop Game or Idle Heros. I've found very few, currently playing one, but it's super scuffed and overall pretty low on my scale. If anyone knows of any more on ios let me know, or if you know of any similar involving pokemon. I don't enjoy nexomon or stuff like that, I want a game with actual pokemon or made-up evolutions that has the chill laid-back style of the idle games.

Need the name of this ios game

    Posted: 16 Feb 2022 08:32 AM PST

The game is an rpg with a pixelated art style and the combat was turn based (real-time or not), and you had the choice to play as a warrior, a witch and a thief. You prepared at a tavern before you go to a tower-like dungeon. I forgot if you were moving up or down, but I know at certain moments the game will give you a choice of choosing one of three random buffs. Anyone know the name?

I wish apple gave us the choice for hiding the white bar in full screen apps.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 04:59 AM PST

I'm not sure why some apps have it or some don't but for the ones that have it and you can't hide it, it is so freaking distracting.

I know about the work around using accessibility settings but it's ridiculous for such a common complaint not to have a solution.

Let me hide it like in Android damn it.

Specially in xcloud or stadia it's super annoying.

What are some good "not-FPS" multiplayer games?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 01:31 PM PST

To elaborate, I'm looking for games that feature multiplayer/co-op features without the game revolving around FPS. I find that the FPS genre is so oversaturated so I'm growing quite tired of them.

So this isn't my primary gaming device. For this reason, I don't really want any big games that are also available on console (dead cells, Minecraft, etc)

I like games to just play when I'm out and bored.

Games I have enjoyed: mushroom wars (although they should be banned for the micro transactions they push), plants vs zombies, plague, infectonator games, kingdom rush games, monument valley, etc.

Recently loved TinyIslandSurvival, and I'm playing tiny room.

I don't mind paying money for quality games.

    Any suggestions?
