Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:52 PM PST First off I am not an Apple hater; I own basically every product of the Apple ecosystem. Apple is fully integrated into my life, to the point that the livability of my home is intrinsically tied to Apple Homekit which, you know, being something that is so tied to one's daily life, ideally should work seamlessly. It's baffling, then, that a company that is known to nail it so often (and other times at least not have a product be a catastrophic failure) has produced such an unreliable way to manage your home. This is a typical scenario with my Homepods: Me- "Hey Siri, turn on Master Bedroom lights" Homepod - "..." Homepod - "Working on that..." Homepod - "..." Homepod - "Still working..." Homepod - "I'm having trouble hearing back from your devices" My Wifi is fine by the way, and I know this because where I live I have no cell coverage, so my phone is always connected via Wifi and I very rarely have issues getting calls or connecting to the Internet. But I find myself unplugging the Homepods constantly to reset and make them work (with a mixed success rate). I even brought in an IoT guy to help maximize my router settings for the Homepods but it didn't do anything to solve Homekit's constant inability to reach my devices. I shouldn't have to unplug my HomePods each time I need them to turn on a goddamn lightbulb. Honestly if Apple isn't going to do much to improve this service they should just discontinue it. I'd rather have an analog house than have to constantly be fighting with goddamn Siri over turning off the living room tv or bringing down the thermostat. [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:19 AM PST Not sure if this violates rule 11, but wanted to warn the /r/apple community as I'd imagine a percentage of people on /r/apple also sell their previous gen iPhone on eBay or similar when they upgrade. In my experience, eBay scams involve an honest buyer and a shady seller. In this case, it's the reverse. I recently sold a gently used iPhone 11 Pro Max. Phone was in immaculate condition and sold for a reasonable price to a buyer with a respectable eBay history. I shipped the phone immediately, money came through, no problems! Three weeks later, gentleman asked to return the phone. He messaged the iPhone stated the battery wasn't genuine. I was pretty surprised at this, as that phone was 100% stock, from the Apple store about 8 months prior and a little suspicious that it took someone three weeks to initiate a return, but I gave the benefit of the doubt, chalked it up to an iOS quirk and accepted the return. Immediately after receiving the device, something just felt off. The colors seemed a little washed out. The bezel seemed a little larger. Then I noticed the scratches around the screen. Pretty quickly, I realized that this guy buys iPhones, harvests the more valuable Apple components (display, battery, logic board) and replaces them with the cheapest knockoff replacement parts available. Finally, he requests a return, getting a full refund and now has genuine Apple components to sell. I took the phone to my local Apple store and they ran a diagnostic and put together a write-up, detailing all the changes that had been made. I also had a timestamped screenshot of the battery health, which could have only been generated with a genuine apple battery. I put all of this together along with a signed affidavit. The good news: eBay sided with me. I wasn't out any money. The bad news: eBay refunded the buyer out of their own pocket and refused to suspend his account. Odds are, this guy has been doing this for awhile (and can't imagine he's the only one). Most people probably can't tell the difference. I just wanted to share this experience in hopes that it helps the community know what to watch for. [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Feb 2022 09:02 AM PST So like a lot of people I bought into Apple's HomePod pitch. I dropped hard earned cash on four of them. I loved them. Then (even by tech industry standards) Apple quickly killed the HomePod. Enter HomePod mini. Long live HomePod! I bought two HomePod mini's to see if they could somehow move enough air to sound similar to the newly killed HomePod. I mean they have all kinds of machine learning and shit, right? But multiple HomePod mini's do not a HomePod make! Damn. I get it. HomePods were positioned in a market Google, Amazon et al quickly commoditized. Then the HomePod was "expensive". Wish Apple would continue developing the HomePod to deliver its vision. Sell it for more money. Call it "HomePod M1 Pro Max" or something. Apple, please. [link] [comments]

A Game of 'Tag - AirTag logic and function - I have a question Posted: 10 Feb 2022 05:58 PM PST I understand all the concerns about stalking and unwanted tracking but for a tracking tag to be useful for its intended purpose, which is to show the location of something you own that has been stolen so you can get it back, doesn't it have to remain covert? In other words, if the tracking device (the AirTag) is going to help you reconnect with your beloved stolen object, wouldn't having it announce itself to the thieves (because now their iPhone thinks the thieves are being stalked, which they are) essentially render the tag useless?
