My first experience using M1 MacBook for 30 minutes of Zoom teaching. Battery Performance Report

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 08:22 PM PST

I seriously can't believe my eyes!

For the past 2 or so years using Zoom to teach remotely, a 30-minute lesson would consistently drain 40-50% of my battery power. I was using MacBook Pro 15in, 2017. Beyond that, performance was always laggy and slow. I would always plug in my device for double-lessons (2x30 minutes) because I wasn't at ease thinking power would end in the middle of a lesson midday (not enough time between lessons to recharge).

Today was my first time using my new MacBook Pro 16in since my order arrived last Friday. I've completed two 30-minute lessons. The first session drained 8%, while the second session took 9%. My documents/slides/media opened silky smooth, I didn't panic once thinking my application froze or quit unexpectedly, I didn't have to 'try again' with anything... nothing of that sort.

This is insane. I was already impressed by others' accounts, but now I get to experience it myself. I LOVE MY NEW COMPUTER.

    Edit: wordiness

Just released a 2.0 update for Fidgets, my app that turns your Apple Watch into a fidget cube

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 10:58 AM PST

Hey r/Apple! I recently released a 2.0 update for my first Apple Watch app. The update adds two new interactive screens, bringing the total count to 6 unique, tactile experiences that each give haptic feedback.

    • Spin the digital crown and feel the rotation
    • Bounce a ball around the screen and collect goals
    • Fiddle with a virtual joystick (NEW)
    • Turn a light switch on and off (NEW)
    • Tap and hold a button for haptic feedback and a satisfying animation
    • Breathe with the Square Breathing screen to calm yourself

You can check out a quick demo here

This app has helped me to relax and have something to fidget with that is non-destructive and not distracting to others. It's free to download, but if you give it a try and like it, you can pay $0.99 to support my work and unlock the ability to change the color theme of the app.

Download Here, or search "Fidgets" in the app store on your watch!

Got any ideas for fun fidget screens? Let me know in a comment!

A List of Articles Explaining That Apple Uses Slave Labor and Child Labor and is Currently Actively Fighting to Continued Access to Slave Labor

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 09:04 AM PST

Money spent on Apple products has gone, and goes, toward Apple's attempt to subvert detection of slave labor in their supply chain, and it is bankrolling their hold on continued revenue they claim from using concentration camp, child and slave labor in China:

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 08:20 AM PST

Hey y'all I recently released Smol Dungeon, it's a rogue like dungeon crawler made by a solo indie dev. It's got easy to learn controls and cute little pixel art. And it has blood.

It's a premium game, no ads or in app purchases to distract from the experience. If you check it out please let me know what you think!

Not sure if it’s been asked but would anyone find convenience in an AirPod case that stored some music?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 06:43 PM PST

My phone died during a workout and i thought about it. Maybe you could just select a playlist in Apple Music and sync to the case over a cord or bluetooth. Im pretty minimal with what i carry around and would never use an apple watch. But i do miss the iPod shuffle days and feel like this could so easily fill that void.

Apple store rubbed me the wrong way today

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 11:15 PM PST

deep breath (it's coronavirus related, but not about coronavirus)

So I went to the apple store today. It's been literally years since I was last in an apple store, and there really isn't a better way to see what's new and what's changed since then. Specifically, I wanted to see MacOS Monterrey, know if the photos app is shit (I still use iPhoto, because it is the best), see the Pro Display XDR in person, look at the new iPhones, and iOS 15 (since you can't test drive these updates b/c of apple's code-signing practices), and look at the new M1 Macs.

I wasn't wearing a mask, but I'm not an anti-mask (or pro-mask) lunatic either. The doors to the apple store are huge and wide-open, so I stroll inside. As I walk inside, someone comes up to me with a bag full of masks and asks me to wear a mask. No problem. Then someone else asks me what I want to do. I told him I want to browse and see what's new.

He says "I'm sorry, we can only let people inside who have an appointment or are looking to buy"... w0t? I stare at him in disbelief... then I say OK and leave.

Then I look back: the doors to the store are wide open and welcoming. Some stores put up those little airport barrier things, so it's clear they want to limit guests, want them to mask up, or only want them there on some need-to-be basis. The store was otherwise empty. There's NOTHING to suggest they're wanting to limit people coming into the store to look at the products.

This just rubbed me wrong. Like a sort of "look don't touch" presentation. Don't pretend to be wide open and welcoming, and then turn people away b/c they're not immediately and overtly willing to open their wallets (I did order two iPhones today for the ridiculous sum of $2500). I walked away, checked out the Samsung store that has since materialized in the mall, walked in (they didn't care at all if I was masked or... clothed) and was able to freely look at their offerings.

TL;DR: Apple either have your stores wide open and let people browse freely, or make it clear you don't want people wandering in the store to look at products, but don't pretend to be wide open and welcoming and then turn people away.

For those interested: I did return to the same apple store, spoke with someone else, and spent like a good hour in there talking with an employee, and figuring out what I needed to figure out (Except I still don't know if Photos is any good b/c the preview photo library only had 330 iphone pictures in there, not 500GB worth of jpg/raw/everything like I have in iPhoto). I should have brought my camera to see how it imports the pictures. I wish I could have installed some other software, but the guy who shadowed me the whole time didn't have admin access, and I was't looking for anything specific so I didn't press the issue. I don't like Monterrey's styling queues. I prefer skeuomorphisms and wish apple would go back. The Mac is a workhorse, not an iOS device. The Music app with the included apple music stuff I don't need is annoying, but I wasn't able to test it further. The updated e-mail app I don't like b/c of the vertical design, and their template emails are also only like 1k or something, idk. I have like 20k e-mails dating back decades and want to see the performance differences. The iPhone 13 Pro and Mini are really cool, but oh my god is the iPhone 13 pro massive in every sense of the word. The Mini is still bigger than my OG iPhone SE, and reaching with your thumb to the corners is too much of a stretch, especially now that swiping up from the bottom is the home button, and you have to swipe down from the top left to get some functionality (I forgot: either notification center or command center) They didn't have a Pro Display XDR on display, but they directed me to other apple stores in the area that did have them on display. They also didn't have the Mac Pro on display, which I would have loved to see.

Beats Studio 3's have practically no bass, some reviewers say otherwise.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 10:51 AM PST

I'm not the first person to notice this. Firstly, let me start by saying that I own all three generations of the Beats Studio, and the bass is absolutely pounding hard in the first and second generation, while the third are extremely lacking. They're also much quieter headphones than the previous generations and have way muddier sound IMO, despite the lessened bass, this could also be a factor.

Now, watching Jimsreviewroom review the 2nd and 3rd generation Beats Studio, he claims they both have exaggerated bass and are great for hip-hop listeners, whereas Linus from LTT claims the Beats Studio 3 have very little bass compared to prior generations, as I feel. Some may consider this a good thing, but for me, it takes away from the sound profile Beats are known for.

I read a little while ago that a short while after they released, a new firmware was released that really dumbed down the bass and volume, but I haven't been able to confirm if this is true, or find more than one source claiming that's the case.

Weirdly enough, the Studio 3's are the only headphones with this issue, the Solo 2 and Solo 3 are both still bass-heavy / live up to the Beats sound signature. I don't own them myself, but know someone who does and they also agree about the Studio 3's being whack in this department.

    What happened?
