Buying iPhones with broken back glass is great

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 05:56 AM PST

I just bought a 12 pro max for 500 bucks Only the back glass panel is broken but doesn't go to the camera bump, I have a black silicon case and it's looking good , I think it's a great way to buy an iPhone for cheap if it doesn't bother you and I will do this in the future

New Sony camera sensors in iPhone 14?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 10:14 AM PST

Sony has developed new, larger stacked cmos sensors for their cameras. Since it's rumored that the iPhone 14 will be slightly thicker without the camera bump, what are the chances that Apple will include the new sensors in the design? Or will Apple's marketing department make users wait for the 15?

With the intense competition, particularly in phone camera stats, I'm hoping that Apple will get one step ahead instead of seemingly one step behind in camera development. iPhone camera software is second to none, but I'd like to see their h hardware at the top as well.

How often do you use Siri and what actions do you usually ask her to do?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 05:20 AM PST

I mainly ask Siri to skip 1-2 min of the podcast I'm listening to, because of the adds. And that's only when it's easier than reaching for my phone, for example when I'm on my bike. I do that a couple of times a week.

Every once in a while I ask for the time or the weather

    iPhone SE 3 Launch+Spec discussion

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 01:10 PM PST

Apple is reportedly gearing up to unveil its 3rd version of the popular iPhone SE in Q1 of 2022 with March being named as the month of launch and has even begun/preparing to shortly begin trial production of the product. Given that its 2 years since we got the iPhone SE 2, its due for an upgrade but a lot faster of one compared to the 4 years between the original and the 2nd.

There are a lot of conflicting reports about the phone from sources. According to some analysts, the iPhone SE 3 will come with the same 4.7 inch screen and big bezels and Touch ID (reminiscent of the iPhone 8 and SE 2) and the same price point. However others have said that Apple might be upgrading the screen size to approximately 5 and a bit inches with a moniker being leaked of 'iPhone SE Plus' - however this is pure speculation and could be related to the updates relating to 5G and a new A15 chip (will most likely be detuned so don't expect flagship level performance) in which case its clear that Apple intends to just change chip and slap on 5G to the SE 2 and rebrand it as the 3.

Some have even claimed that the SE will be modelled after the XR and will essentially take the mantle of design from the largely unsuccessful 'Mini' series which saw its final release with the 13 due to poor sales figures. If so, this could see a revamp of the outdated design of the 8 and we could see a new design akin to the series of iPhones succeeding the X.

Camera specs are a hit-and-miss to predict at this time but if its true that Apple only wishes for the chip and 4G limitations to change, doesn't seem very likely that anything new will be coming. Ross Young, an analyst claims that Apple will release a modern design with a 5.7-6.1 inch design in 2024 for the SE which could indicate little substance to the magnitude of upgrades the company is planning to bring in March

Battery life and screen size were amongst the biggest woes of iPhone SE 2020 users with many complaining of horrendous drain and battery life; as well as of a 'nearly unusable' screen (what I've heard from some personal friends). The new chip may seem to resolve that in part but with 5G I doubt it'll fill the cracks very well

What are your thoughts on the specs and launch date and whether Apple will just fix up the 2020 phone or if we're in store for a revamp either with screen or design and what you think we'd get/should get in that scenario? I'm thinking of waiting for this SE to come out and upgrade and I know that industry analysts and leaks are hyping this phone up to be the one to steal a billion or so Android users away to join the Apple ecosystem, so it seems doubtful to me that Apple would drop the ball if that was their intention. It's not often we get an SE upgrade every year, so I'm thinking there might be some serious substance to this launch but let's discuss

Also Happy New Year to everyone!

UAG Monarch Kevlar for Iphone 13 Pro Max (Unlucky Experience)

UAG Monarch Kevlar for Iphone 13 Pro Max (Unlucky Experience)

Purchased my very own UAG Monarch Kevlar edition for Iphone 13 Pro Max, the kevlar strands started to fray within 1 week of use.

Redeemed a new phone case from UAG and look what I've received. Utterly disgusted by the quality control of this model for such an expensive price $129.90SGD (Approximately $96 USD). A seam which can be obviously seen piecing two kevlar stitches together.

iPhone 13 Pro Max. Battery life is stupid

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 05:08 PM PST

Coming from Android, I'd aim for phones with 5000MaH or so batteries. My experience was always pretty good.

But holy shit, it's not like I've been on my phone all day but it's dinner time and I'm at 71%.

Even days where I'm eating up data, I haven't been able to get below 30% and that's long after I should've gone to bed.

    Good job Apple.

    Foldable iPhone

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:24 AM PST

Does anybody expect Apple to release a foldable iPhone any time in the next few years? I haven't really heard any rumors to that effect.

I have to say, the Samsung Z3 is a really cool looking phone. LG has one that looks nice as well. I really like the smaller size when folded and the back screen would be handy. However, I'm also concerned with longevity, does anybody really know how these will hold up after a couple of years of use? I can see them getting brittle and breaking after a while.

I know of reasons why Apple wouldn't want to release one at this time. I tried out a couple of foldable phones in stores and one thing I noticed was you could feel the spot in the middle where it folds. One of our friends has one that folds lengthwise into tablet size and I could actually see the fold when looking from an angle. With Apple's attention to detail I'm guessing that both of these issues are showstoppers.

Concerns about the 13 Pro's camera quality

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 02:19 AM PST

First of all, let me clarify this is not a troll or bait post, I am genuinely concerned about the photos I've seen/my own sanity at this point.

I've been thinking of switching to the iPhone 13 ever since it was announced. I am currently using a three year old Samsung Galaxy S9 pretty much on its last leg, and I've always been an Android user, but now I'd like to try out iOS since I can finally afford an iPhone (I'm not in the US, so there were no real trade-in deals here). I also love the size, since the 13 Pro has the same height as my current phone, and that's pretty much the maximum I can comfortably balance/hold with one hand (yep, I have tiny hands).

My phone is my main (well, only) camera device, and I'm mostly taking pictures of:

    • My two cats (so indoor photos with preferable short shutter time)
    • Nature photos of forests and mountains from my hikes
    • Photos from sightseeing walks (so lots of buildings with small details)

However, based on the real life photos from various iPhone 13 Pro users, the camera is... well, not that convincing. A lot of the photos posted on r/iPhoneography and other forums are blurry or out of focus, as if the photographer didn't wait for the camera app to fully finish capturing the image, or were moving while taking the photo, or something like that.

Is the camera app really this bad at identifying the main focus, or are the users lacking the skills? Or does it take that long to capture and process the image that a point-and-shoot approach will lead to blurry/out of focus pictures? Or have I just subconsciously fallen into the mistake of pixel peeping?

Please help me convince myself that the camera is not that bad, and the change would be worth it (the other option would be to wait for the S22 that's rumored to come out around February and will have almost the exact same size as the 13 Pro, but I'm not sure I can deal with my current phone's problems for another 2-3 months).

Repurposed iPhone XS charging case working with iPhone 13 pro

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 09:51 PM PST

If for any particular reason you were wondering if an older apple charging case would work with the new iPhones, they do.

Decided to take apart my old case as it was no use to me, added some hot glue and here we are.

I intend to add some MagSafe magnets and possibly make it more practical.

PSA: Respond to iMessage notification without leaving the App you’re in

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 09:52 PM PST

Just a friendly reminder that you can always respond directly to an incoming iMessage/SMS message without leaving the App that you're using.

How: When the notification banner pops up from the top of your display, just pull down on the banner (instead of tapping on it) to type your respond instantly without having to fully switch over to the messaging app.

First Apple product since iPod Touch 2009 coming from Samsung

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 05:45 AM PST

Last Android phone was the S10+ and at it's time the phone was an absolute solid beast.

Finally the battery was starting to wane a bit and decided to jump onto the 13 pro max battery train.

So far 3 weeks in, the phone has not disappointed, the switch from android to IOS isn't jarring a day or two max to get everything ported over and within a week using is breezy, the software's intuitive enough to hit the ground running.

The Let downs have definitely been:

    1. Siri's snappy and fast but dumb as bricks compared to google assistant.

    2. Map's is pretty and simple but not as good as google maps seeing how everyone uses it and there's reviews on google maps tied in.

    3. The default mail app is kinda...average, still have to use gmail and outlook for my dedicated emails.

    4. After every siri voice interaction the pop up...stays? until you touch the screen. There's other small quirks that I haven't fully accepted.

    5. The phone is genuinely heavy, especially when lying down in bed and trying to hold it up.

    6. No fingerprint reader but faceID is kinda freaky accurate and fast

    7. NO YOUTUBE VANCED, musi or what not simply isn't the same, the UX is lame and for the first time ever I'm paying for YouTube premium just for the quality of life, I would love to pay a cheaper price if it didn't come with YouTube music which is really just niche and incomplete, Spotify is still supreme but I'll try Apple Music for 6 months given the trial, but so far lossless and Dolby atmos is cool audio wise but app wise Spotify is too far ahead for now

    8. Notifications is kind of meh, one of those things I accepted and got used to but vs android even the small pop ups somehow isn't as intuitive and limited.

    The Pro's

    1. The battery life. enough said.

    2. The camera.

    3. iCloud

    4. Even on android apple's audio products have always been the best regardless, and I'd lose features using them with android, one of my big motivators to switch as petty as it is.

    5. The accessories are well made and user experience is actually decent. Surprisingly not having an audio port hasn't affected me that much, I use the dongle when I really need to, and magsafe is genuinely good to use. Compounding further, other products made in the "ecosystem" seem to be integrated better vs android which is getting somewhere but apple has the cake. At this point I'm considering an Apple Watch but not fully sold on it yet, it's a nifty piece but maybe waiting for the series 8 is the play

Overall I've just wanted a good phone and as I get older I don't need as much in depth features and customization, the UI/UX just has to be good with solid battery life, eager to see how the silicone race heats up and maybe in the future I will return to android, just going with whoever's the 'better experience'

All the memes about magsafe and the notch fade away after using, granted I've never experienced what the larger notch feels like but still surprisingly none of those even seem relevant at all upon usage.

Going forward I hope Apple will add a fingerprint reader, and make third party/competitor apps work better (?) with IOS, its somewhat noticeable that google maps just isn't as smooth vs apple maps and sometimes it does things I'd swear would never happen if I was on an android phone, call me crazy but if I didn't know better I'd say apple purposely kneecaps some competitor apps to make their own seem better.

    Thanks, I'm enjoying my stay.

Bottom line really is whatever design and decision for the most part has been thought out by apple leading to UX being simple and smooth

Edited a few things that I forgot, also didn't know about sideloading and vinegar etc, would definitely check those out

Are there any apps I must have on IOS?

What is making you dislike/hate Apple maps?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 08:26 AM PST

I'm wondering because from my experience Apple map is about as good if not better then google map. I don't want to deny anybody experience, I'm just curious as I see a ton of post where people talk shit about it, but don't explain what they don't like. Personally from my use (I live in a big city in Canada) Apple map is as accurate as google, and I much prefer Apple way of doing things compare to google. I love the UI, but my biggest problem with google is that it always reroute me so that I always drive and never stop even if that doesn't save any time or at most 5 minutes. Also more then one time adresses weren't on google map when they were on Apple, road name too. I guess if you want to save at most 5 minutes and don't like to feel like your wasting time google is good. But really from my experience Apple is as good and just tend to make me take the safer, simpler direction.

Unpopular opinion: I loathe square design, and you?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 02:17 AM PST

I hate the flat edges, they are terrible. "well they look slick!", yeah I don't care, they are uncomfortable, they hurt when holding the phone! My pinky cries and gets anxiety attacks everytime he has to hold the phone, my palms suffer as well.

Honestly, can't wait for this flat-edge era to end and go back to round edges. We had square designs with iPhone 5S, then completely changed to round edges with iPhone 6, everyone loved it, me included, super ergonomic, a pleasure to hold.

Then we changed back to flat edges with the 12 series and everybody clapping like it's something super new...

I have the 12 Pro Max and honestly, I've grown to hate it, never disliked a phone before because of the (uncomfortable) design, it's not that it looks ugly or beautiful, it's more of an ergonomic point of view. Won't change my phone until we go back to round edges, I'll have to sit and wait...

    Rant's over.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 07:57 AM PST

I love little workflow improvements and "hidden" features/gestures. ((Like swiping down at the bottom for reachability))

And the jump in cameras is HUGE! Are there new interactions and features that I have to know?

What can be done to make people upgrade in the future?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 09:45 AM PST

I have been using an iPhone 13 pro for about a month now and loving the experience, battery life, display, and cameras are all ridiculously top notch. It has got me wondering if everyone else is starting to become this happy with their phones? It doesn't seem that there's a major technology leap that can be done in the near future (unless you're into foldables) that would warrant a new phone considering how good they've become these days. Maybe I'm alone in this thought process but I wanted to hear the community's thoughts on where phones could go in the future besides just quicker processors to deal with increasingly heavy apps as time goes on.
