Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion - What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 04:00 PM PST

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

Pixel art RPGs with no in-game purchases?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 05:20 AM PST

Beside the retro ports of pre-Playstation era games because I have played them.

I don't care if they are free or paid, as long as they don't have gacha mechanics.

    Are there any HDR games?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 01:04 PM PST

I recently sold my 2020 11" iPad Pro to buy 12,9" M1 iPad Pro just for the sake of XDR screen. And tbh I can't find any games that would take advantage of this huge and beautiful screen. Even Apple Arcade games look worse on this iPad, cause they are just scaled. So I was wondering if there are any games that support 12,9 inch iPad resolution and HDR.

xCloud gaming, anyone else trying this on iOS?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 01:40 PM PST

I just spent 3 hours playing a few games, played Back 4 Blood quite adequately, even with multiplayer, and was pretty good. the iPad Mini 6 got a little warm though, and it sucks battery.

Looking for a restaurant management or cooking game.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 09:00 AM PST

Are there any good games of that category? So that one cooking game at Apple Arcade and wondered if it's any good or if there are any other games out there that are worth some time?

I just don't want to play a total p2w cash grab. Any suggestions?

iOS games that work well with Picture-in-Picture

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 11:29 PM PST

Anyone enjoying anything (turn based or idle-ish) while watching videos in picture-in-picture in iPhone?

Dungeon Falan works pretty well as you don't need the entire screen to play, and it's turn based, so when I need to check equipment or whatever, I can just slide the video down and do the task without hurry.

I tried Egg Inc. and there wasn't any good place to put the video window. Threes was another one I tried, but the "next piece" preview was hidden or the board was covered.

    So, any other recs?

Using iPhone as a gaming controller for an iPad?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 10:50 AM PST

There are a handful of apps for connecting to an Apple TV, or a PC. The only results I can find on Google are from around 2012 when Joypad was a thing, it would've been exactly what I'm looking for. I have an iPhone 12 Mini and an iPad Mini 6, and it's frustrating because I've tried a million things including trying to set up the iPhone as a Switch Control device (in accessibility settings) but can't get the devices to connect. I am purchasing an 8Bitdo controller for iOS but until that arrives in late December I thought I would try asking reddit.

Why isn't there an obvious way to use my iPhone as a controller for my iPad apps? There are multiple ways to connect devices these days (wi-fi, cellular and bluetooth) and input lag isn't a big problem for something like Minecraft for me. The mini iPhone is the perfect size to use as a controller for the mini iPad! Both extremely portable, I could set up a whole gaming session in my car.

Talk me into buying a new ipad vs a Xiaomi pad 5. For games and pen drawing mainly.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 02:02 AM PST

As the title says, I'm looking at the new Xiaomi pad 5. But I also fiddled around with those new ipads as well. I know the iPad has that fancy a15 chip, which is super strong. But are there any AAA games that are only on ipad that might tip me in that direction? I saw divinity original sins 2 is on there, are there any other games of this caliber? Monster hunter freedom unite 2 used to be on, but it was removed? Civ 6 came to android, along with dead cells and my time at Portia. Most of the big name games are on both platforms, except divinity. Is there anything that I am missing? I'd be looking at the lowest cost model that has the a15, so probably the mini. This is just for laying on the couch or in bed after a long day and doodling with the pen or playing some games, scrolling reddit, etc. So far, the Xiaomi is in the lead, I get almost the same stuff, and I can just load APKs to my Xiaomi, whereas iphone it's not as easy. What do you guys think? Sell me on the iPad!

    Request: family gaming by iphone/ipad/appletv

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 03:04 PM PST

Looking to digitalize family game night. Each member has an iphone and we have an ipad at our disposal. I would be willing to purchase appletv for christmas if need be. Kids are 14 and 11, typically like lighter board/card games like ticket to ride, phase 10, sequence and similar. And thoughts on how to make this work? Anyone done similar? What equipment would I need?

    Question about The Quest expansion

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 04:28 PM PST

Just bought the bundle which came with the Ice and Fire expansion. It downloaded two separate apps, so I'm wondering how that works? Can I use the same character for both? I haven't even opened the apps yet and I'm unsure which to actually start.

Gamepad Mount for iPad Pro 12

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 06:57 AM PST

I saw a video from unboxtherapy where he used an older sony ps4 joystick tablet holder for iPad mini. I can't find it in stock, but was wondering if there is something similar where the tablet sits on the mount and i hold it along with the gamepad for a more comfortable couch experience. So far I have a table mount bracket that holds the tablet in place but i have to move it around as i change position. While having it attached to the controller it's always sits in front of where you are looking

Do any iOS games take advantage of the Dualsense's haptic feedback or adaptive triggers?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 07:41 PM PST

I've been using my Dualsense controller with a few Apple arcade games, and it works great as a generic controller. That said, I've read a few articles from several months ago where Apple hinted that the Dualsense's features would be compatible with iOS, but I've yet to see anyone talk about if any games have ended up supporting it. (And for that matter, I don't get any haptic feedback through my controller.)

Anybody have any insight on this?

What are some pvp games with controller support? I thought that brawl stars would be playable with controller but seems like it isn't supported, anything similar to that game or other good suggestions?
