I found the cause of the corrupted grey areas when transfering photos to a Windows PC! Posted: 05 Dec 2021 07:56 AM PST I guess quite a few Windows users have run into this issue - if you use "Keep Originals" and also use HEIC, then your portrait/edited photos show up with grey corruption when transfering straight to a PC. Like described here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251982667 and in other threads on this subreddit. The original images named IMG_xxxx.HEIC are fine, but IMG_Exxxx.HEIC are corrupted. So, I did some sleuthing with a hex editor on the transfered pictures, and I just realized the IMG_Exxxx.HEIC images are NOT ACTUALLY HEIC AT ALL! They are actually JPEGs. And this seems to be part of the issue. I repeat. The IMG_Exxxx.HEIC images are NOT ACTUALLY HEIC - THEY ARE JPEG images with the wrong extension! I tried emailing myself the picture, and got a JPEG, that works. Further examination reveals that apart from a few bytes of metadata, the JPEG I got via email matches byte for byte with the IMG_Exxxx.HEIC file, EXCEPT THE HEIC FILE IS SHORTER - that is why the grey areas are there - the file is truncated, and the grey area is the missing data. I also tried uploading the image via the Dropbox app, and got the WORKING IMAGE THAT IS ACTUALLY A HEIC through that. Another curious thing is that the filesize of the Dropbox file (which is actually the correct HEIC file) is always 512 bytes smaller than the broken misnamed JPEG file. So it seems like in the transfer process, a JPEG is made, like when you pick "Automatic" instead of "Keep Originals", but the phone takes the NAME AND SIZE of the HEIC file, but the DATA from the JPEG file. I suspect the error is on Apple's side, since I saw a Linux user struggling with the same issue, though I won't put the blame for certain there yet. submitted by /u/ymgve [link] [comments]

Given that the display is OLED, the only thing that's holding this feature back is the software right? How to secure phone against robbery + demand for passcode? Posted: 05 Dec 2021 12:42 PM PST A friend of mine has been mugged recently and the thief forced her to provide her passcode. This is a terrible situation because with passcode they had access to her SMS and Email (default Apple Mail app) and thus many of her other passwords were reset (including iCloud's password) before she could get her hands on a notebook to put the phone on Lost Mode. The situation was only finally reverted when the mobile operator blocked the SIM chip and gave her a new one, and with SMS back she was able to recover iCloud and all the rest. I know this is pretty much an impossible situation, but I'm wondering what possible measures are feasible with existing tools and what possible tools one could create to mitigate this threat model (extortion). Is there an app that is useful in this situation? Could there be one with current SDKs? AFAIK you can't have FaceID only, a passcode is always there. I'd love if I could disable passcode but not FaceID. For example of possible feature for the iPhone, the app Strongbox and VeraCrypt have a "duress PIN" feature that gives the impression that the password worked (presenting dummy functionality). Losing ownership of home in Home app automatically Posted: 05 Dec 2021 05:06 AM PST Hey folks, so I just moved apartments and decided to restart my home in the Home app from scratch. I reset all the devices and managed to set everything up just fine (a Hue hub with a few bulbs, a HomePod Mini and an Apple TV). Everything was working perfectly until I went and added my wife to the home in the Home app. Not only did I lose ownership of the home automatically when she accepted the invite, but she wasn't added as well. Now I'm locked out of making modifications to the home (I'm just a resident), and her invite never completes. Since I'm not an owner anymore, I can't reinvite her. I left it working during the night because I know Home sometimes is dumb and takes a while to sync, but it's still the same. I've tried resetting everything and setting everything up again multiple times but the same thing keeps happening. And when I get notifications on scheduled time, I dont open all of them, I just slide left and clear them which I find not interesting. Help! My headphones are too Loud. Posted: 05 Dec 2021 08:33 AM PST Hi All! I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 4.40BT's and the minimum volume setting is way too LOUD. This is not a issue with iOS, but with the headphones themselves(maybe just my unit, maybe an oversight on Sennheiser's part, idk). Now, I used to have a Samsung before this weekend and on that device I installed some software to reduce the volume and then immediately forgot about the issue with my headphones. Does anyone know how I can reduce the volume? I can't find something like it in Settings.
