I'd be thankful if you guys could help me decide whether to buy a M1 Air or not. Posted: 24 Nov 2021 02:59 AM PST Ok, hear me out. I'm currently a university student, majoring in Electronics. When I got into university I bought an Asus laptop, Vivobook pro 15 N580GD to be exact. With "i7-8750H – 12GB of ram – GTX 1050" configuration. Worth mentioning that it works like a charm. No issues whatsoever. Recently I've been thinking about buying a MacBook Air M1, with "16GB of ram – 256". Mostly because macos seems stable asf and from the experience I've got by using iPhone (even old ones works seriously smooth) and also now It's a good time for me to change laptops (personal reasons!) and also these M1 macs are really tempting. I've been always looking for a good machine that has everything figured out… a complete package I better say, small sized but yet powerful enough to handle most tasks... a respected battery life, good display and stylish design but yet durable enough to not worry about it much. This is a nearly perfect package you can get now. A really reasonable performance to price ratio. Tho I'm being a little skeptical about couple of things that I'd appreciate if you guys could help me with. 1) Should I do it? Does it sound like a reasonable purchase? Would u buy it if you were in my shoes? 2) How limited is macOS? I've heard people calling macbooks "Absolutely proprietary" and such. (Cuz my iphone is pretty limited in terms of installing apps outside of app store or even saving stuff from elsewhere. 3) there's this compatibility thing with iphones, that when for instance, you're on ios 11, you can't update WhatsApp unless you update your ios. Why? Because WhatsApp requires ios 12. Does this exist in macOS? 5) how long do they last? I've heard things like dying SSDs because of swap memory or something. Or screen cracking (they crack on their own). I know the design of every laptop has some flaws to it. Tho I need a durable machine that can at least last for 7 years. P.s. none of my friends or people I know have macbooks. So this subreddit is pretty much the only source of info I can get my hands on. Thank you all in advance. Really appreciated. Location services broken in browsers - Monterey Posted: 24 Nov 2021 06:38 AM PST When I try to use a site that uses my location, say Boston Market, it says my GPS isn't enabled. I know I don't have a GPS built into my Mac, so it just be having an issue using location services. This happens both on Chrome and Safari, so it must be a setting system wide. I've checked location services in settings and they're enabled for both Chrome and Safari. This also doesn't seem to be an issue for the Apple Maps program itself, but google maps doesn't work in Chrome or Safari. Maps doesn't have permission to use your location. We do use Sentinal One as our corporate anti-malware program, but not sure if that specifically blocks something in our browsers. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
M1 pro 16in, external display (tv) looks weird. Posted: 24 Nov 2021 06:36 AM PST Never really used mac os before and can't figure out the external display settings. When I connect to my tv via hdmi or tb3 dongle, there are 2 issues. First, after adjusting the resolution and scaling, it doesn't seem quite right. Like text edges are pixelated for instance. Second, the colors, brightness, saturation are off and its painful to look at, causing a lot of eye strain. I've tried all the different profiles in the display settings and they all look weird. Not sure what the solution is. With my windows laptop I don't have any of these issues when connecting to the tv, so the tv is definitely ok. Any help appreciated. [link] [comments]
Monitor :Duplicate vs extended ,GPU and resources Posted: 24 Nov 2021 02:10 AM PST Hey there ! Do u think that both "copy display" and "extended display" would use the same amount of resources? In terms of GPU usage I mean Cuz rn I'm using copy display, and use the monitor only (the internal display is rendering but brightness is down) But I'm wondering ,since I can use up to 50 windows (I'm a mess lol) ,if the GPU has to render it *2 (100windows ?) ,Won't it be worse than using extended display, and put there nothing...or just things that are good on internal (,movies /video player ,since onterla has higher brightness ) Also is there no way to turn the interal screen off? (using the MacBook keyboard and trackpad ) [link] [comments]

Notes not syncing between iMac and iPhone Posted: 24 Nov 2021 04:48 AM PST Since upgrading to Monterey, my notes are no longer syncing between my iMac and my iPhone. Notes syncing in iCloud is turned on on my iPhone, but when I go to iCloud on my iMac, all of the Apple apps are unchecked, and when you try to check them off, nothing happens. Anyone else experiencing this? [link] [comments]
How do I free up space in Hotmail but retain the messages in Mac Mail? Posted: 24 Nov 2021 02:46 AM PST I have my Hotmail email account synced to Mac Mail but my Hotmail is at 98% full. I want to bulk delete messages to free up space in Hotmail but I want to retain the messages in Mac Mail just in case I need them in the future. I don't want them to go into a separate archived folder or anything, I just want to, for example, delete a load of emails in 'sent' in Hotmail but them still be there in my Mac Mail 'sent'. How do I do this? [link] [comments]
