Posted: 05 Nov 2021 12:35 PM PDT Why apple is promoting the watch series 3? I mean, 219€ is a great price but why do they promote it when it's from 2017? Does this not affect the selling of newer but also more expensive wachstes? [link] [comments]
M1 Max/Pro Docker w/Ruby Developer Perspective. Posted: 05 Nov 2021 10:26 AM PDT TL;DR: Docker and other apps still transitioning and they aren't taking full advantage of the arm64 architecture with M1 SoC. Unsolicited advise: Be happy with your M1 or your i9 or your computer, if you're not feeling any roadblocks or slow downs and you can wait a few years it' going to worth it to get all the apps running natively on ARM. Again, this is unsolicited advise. The benchmarks from M1Pro and M1Max to export and render video are way different compared with docker performance. If we compare the times from rendering a ProRes video in Final Cut Pro to the time to build instances in Docker, day and night, there is no real gains in docker. The new MBP 14" and 16" with M1Pro/M1Max doesn't show any real benefit of the real power on some applications like Docker to build or run instances, unless you want to create hundreds of images (as you can see in the video). My old machine MBP16" with i9 was very loud and get some heat, but was very consistent with docker images build time and was able to compile all the instances. I use Ruby on Rails but in some cases, I have dependencies with external libraries compiled in C language. I changed the 16" Intel for a M1 13" Pro, I'm happy with it. But for docker still kind slow and there some docker images impossible to build due to the x86 dependencies. So I just figured out another way to get my job done, but this is happening not because the M1 are bad computers, it's because we still transitioning and all the x86 is legacy for now and Rosetta 2 is not X86. A few numbers as reference for Docker. Build Docker Getting Started Image:
Build Docker Example Votting-App (github.com/dockersamples/example-voting-app)
Create 100 instances of votting-app
Personal Conclusion Docker still transitioning, after almost a year in M1, if you're using docker, it's better to stay under Intel until you can. I was waiting for someone to compare Docker across all the past 3 years of computers. Just watched this Docker Comparisson video from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6e8NUNHFWo Thanks to Alex, for making this video. [link] [comments]
