Lifetime Windows user switched to Macbook M1. I think im converted and here is why.

Ive been using Windows computers uniquely for over 20 years and I finally did the unthinkable and bought a MacBook Air M1. It's been interesting and I thought id share some of my thoughts. I read some articles like this before i made the plunge and maybe someone else will find this helpful, or at least interesting.

Ive been using the MacBook every day for work and at home for the last month.

    PROS of MacBooks (macOS)

    • Touchpad. It really can't be improved as far as I'm concerned. And the gestures are hugely awesome. I would miss this bullet point the most if i ever go back to a windows laptop.
    • General quality is higher than any computer I've ever had. Screen, speakers, keyboard, hinge, aluminum design etc, its all top notch and way better than anything else I was considering buying. I think this is also a big reason why they hold their value so well which is another advantage. A 10 year old macbook pro still sells for $200-300 on ebay.
    • Battery life is incredible. Well over 10 hours of constant use. It lasts 2-3x longer than my coworkers laptops.
    • It just works. It was a relatively simple process to get started and lots of Mac OS does just work.
    • Sidecar with my iPad is pretty cool.
    • This was the big one: With the M1 Chip I feel like Apple is actually a financially compelling option for once. Its strange but the MacBook Air at $850 is a far better laptop than any other windows PC for the same price. To get a windows laptop that competed with the M1, I would have needed to spend $1200+. With covid i think windows laptops are artificially expensive which really helped push me to this Macbook.
    • Charges with USB type C, like everything else I own.
    • The lack of built in advertisements and bloatware is refreshing.
    • In general the OS is more polished. All of it is super attractive and clean looking.
    • Designed in the US. Don't care too much, but its cool i guess.
    • Customer support was super fast and helpful. I forget what I called them for but there was no wait, and they were able to remote into my laptop almost immediately and quickly helped me find what I was looking for. Its nice that the hardware and software are the same company, i think that goes a long way when it comes to customer service and optimization in general.

    CONS

    • Closing windows- doesn't actually close the windows and please spare me the reasoning behind why Apple does this. Ive read every excuse possible and I don't buy any of them. Closing a window should close the window. Period. At least make it an option to have the red X close the app, that way legacy apple users can keep what they are use to and everyone else can be happy. I think it would be a very popular option. And why is minimizing the app not an option when the window is in full screen? Its all just very nonsensical.
    • Only being able to open windows and not minimize them with the bottom app bar. Why doesn't clicking on an open app minimize it? This is just wrong, no two ways about it. leads to a lot of clutter.
    • Snapping windows to corners or sides. I know there is an option to tile to the right and left but Windows version of this is much quicker and more robust. Especially on windows 11.
    • Cant game on it. This is another big downside for me. Because i cant game on it, just about everything i use my laptop for could definitely be done with a nice $400 chromebook. The chip is complete overkill for what i need and its why i would probably recommend a chromebook to most users before i recommend a macbook. But for those people who have the money, these are a nice luxury.
    • Finder is not my favorite but I think I just need more time to get use to it. NAS access was pretty smooth once I looked up how to get on it but it has weird gremlins.
    • Right click: super strange that it isn't enabled by default.
    • Despite the advertising, M1 can't actually run any iPad apps (yet) as far as I can tell. Which is a shame because there are two in particular that I would love to have on my laptop; Goodreader and Foreflight.
    • Google Drive app doesn't work well. I have to use the website in a browser which isn't a big deal but so much of my work revolves around Google Drive that I miss having an app for it that works well.
    • Spotlight search is NOT very intelligent or helpful and the Windows version is way better in my opinion.
    • Apple is a bully, you have to have an Apple account and you have to give them your credit card and phone number before you can download anything from their store. Speaking of their store; apps are more expensive but the apple store is worlds better than the microsoft store.
    • Not a touchscreen. Most of the MacBook Air competitors I was considering had a touchscreen.

In short, I would definitely buy another and I don't have any regrets. A big part of that is just because so much of what I do on a laptop is in a browser. Honestly 90% of my time is spent in the Brave browser (basically Google Chrome). In college about 10 years ago when my laptop died I replaced it with a Chromebook and this kinda reminds me of that. It does so much of what I need and it does it really well. Only occasionally, I need to remote into or get access to a windows PC to do something.

App, extension or terminal command for Safari to always show open link in private window?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 07:47 PM PDT

I'm aware that hold option while right clicking on a link will provide that option. I often browse with one hand, and it would be much easier if I didn't have to hold option key. Thank you!

The issue appears to be unique to Parallels on macOS, so I'm crossposting this here too.

    Memory pressure: M1 vs Intel

    Memory pressure: M1 vs Intel

My previous mac was a Macbook Pro Retina 15" (Late 2013, Core i7 2.0, 8 gb ram, 256 SSD) that dies 8 months ago (A good soldier). I replaced it with a mac Mini M1 (8gb ram, 256 SSD) and i'm more than happy, but there is something that bothers me: I can swear that in all my years with the MBP i only saw the memory graphic in yellow 3 or 4 times and in the Mini is the natural state. My usage patterns and habits are the same... same apps, same work (Photoshop, illustrator, Indesign and the normal stuff). The Mini is fast as hell all the time, and this is not a problem, but the memory pressure in yellow makes me curious.

¿The M1 uses more ram than intel processors? ¿There is some difference? ¿Is the same for you?

Google Drive alias on desktop ... points where?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 06:57 PM PDT

I upgraded to the latest Google Drive a few months ago when prompted. The installer placed a cute-looking Google Drive icon on my desktop. When I double-click on the icon, it opens up a folder with just one item: an alias called "My Drive". This alias is broken; it leads nowhere. Where should it lead?

Meantime, I have 15 GB of files stored online in Google Drive, which Google dutifully backs up. So why is the Google Drive desktop icon empty? How should it work?

    Face ID on Mac

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 05:58 PM PDT

I think it would be cool to see face id on MacBook or iMac, idk if I prefer it rather that touch Id (I consider both of them nice). The best scenario would be having both of them, but let's be honest, it's apple, that will never happen, otherwise we would have it in other products. Anyway, which you prefer?

Using 2 LG 27UN850-W 27 monitors on both Macbook Pro 2017 and Dell Latitude 5420

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 05:10 PM PDT

I have a LG 27UN850-W 27 monitor which I use with my personal Macbook Pro 2017 connected via USB-C. I use the same monitor with my company provided Dell Latitude 5420 also. I am planning to purchase another monitor of the same model but read that the it doesn't support "Daisy Chaining". As a test before buying an additional monitor, I tried using Apple's USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter which I plugged into the USB-C port of the Macbook and connected the HDMI cable from the monitor to this adapter. This would cut out the power supply to the device so I have use it in non-clamshell mode to keep the screen awake. The side-effect of using HDMI port was the cursor showed some lag while moving around. Not sure if this is due to the drop in the refresh rate due to HDMI port being used or if its the problem with the adapter. I tried the different refresh rate settings but still showed the same behaviour.

My question is, what are my options to use 2 displays with the same 60 Hz refresh rate. Is there any adapter which I would need to purchase? Also, Macbook 2017 comes with 4 USB-C Thunderbolt ports. If I plug-in the output of the monitors i.e. individual USB-C output cables from the each of the 2 monitors to 2 individual Macbook ports, would it be a problem as the monitor's USB-C is an upstream port delivering both data and power. I am concerned with the power (60W + 60W) being delivered to 2 ports at the same time. Also, with the said setup, will the Macbook recognize the 2 displays?

Type C Hub for Macbook Air M1 (All Day Use)

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 10:34 AM PDT

    Hi All,

I am struggling to find out what is the best type c hub for my MBA M1. I have been gone through many hubs including reviews but still confused.

I am looking for a HDMI, two or three USB ports and One Type C port for data transfer. I would use this hub almost all day since i am working keyboard, mouse and a monitor.

[I have seen some people have been experienced some issues with Type C PD port, is this has been fixed by Apple?]

I would love to see the suggestions and recomendations.

    Thank you in Advance.

My monitor isn't displaying output while my M1 MacBook Pro is in clamshell mode. I have the laptop plugged in, tried using a different HDMI cable, restarted the laptop. It was working this morning but for some reason, it only works when the laptop lid is open.

    need help upgrading macOS

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 03:24 PM PDT

This question is definitely going to be really stupid so please bear with me.

    I currently have a MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2017, 2 thunderbolt 3 ports thats running macOS Sierra v 10.12.6

Basically I have to get my current macOS up to v 10.15.7 and I have been researching for days on end and I still don't know whether I should upgrade to Catalina or straight to Big Sur.

The reason is that I need to buy Logic Pro x but the current version on the App Store is not compatible with my mac atm. I was previously working on a cracked copy of Logic Pro x (I couldn't afford it before but now I can.)

Also I'm currently running a time machine backup in case I lose my music projects.

I'm just really rubbish with this stuff and don't know what to do. If you've read this far thank you for your patience and any help would be appreciated!

Help with APFS volumes - I'm stuck and not sure what to do!

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 10:11 AM PDT

    Hi all -

First, I bought a Sabrent Rocket for my 2017 27" iMac w/64GB RAM, 2TB fusion drive, and now I use it as my main drive (booting off of it). I did this because the speed is so much higher than my fusion drive (just tested - the Sabrent Rocket writes 1498 and reads 2400 while the fusion drives does that in initial tests - BlackMagic's Disk Speed Test, but then crawls after heavy use).

Big Sur did some weird stuff when I CCC'd my fusion drive to the Sabrent Rocket and I ended up erasing my fusion drive to put a blank OS install on it.

    Here's the problem:

    1. There are two "Macimtosh HD" and one "Macintosh HD - Data - Data" volumes in Disk Utility.
    2. I don't know which are actually in use. Can I delete an unneeded volume so I don't have two "Macintosh HD" drives/icons on my desktop and in Finder?
    3. I don't understand the Big Sur external boot drive restrictions. If I erase my fusion drive again and start over, is it possible I won't be able to boot off my Thunderbolt drive? Is there some way to test this?

I recognize that I've probably done a poor job of explaining my challenges here, as I'm summing up months of changes into the main issues I see today. I'm trying to fix this so I can use the multiple volume features of APFS to install another macOS version on the same drive.

So, please review and if you can point me in the right direction for cleaning up my original fusion drive's extra volumes, it would be appreciated.

Help with reverting changes done by BootBuddy (from macEnhance)

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 10:57 AM PDT

    Hello,

I recently downloaded an application called "BootBuddy" from macEnhance. BootBuddy is used to customize boot and login screens. I used it to change my login screen wallpaper a while ago, but I didn't like it anymore and I wanted to change it back to sync with my desktop wallpaper. But there is no revert button in the app. I deleted BootBuddy with an app uninstaller and then restarted my mac, but my login screen wallpaper didn't revert to syncing with the desktop wallpaper. It sort of worked on a standard account but it didn't work on my main (administrator account).

Does anyone have a fix for this? I don't care if I need to write hundreds of lines of terminal scripts but I just want to get my login screen normal.

    Thanks :)

here's the download link to the app and the source code
