Does playing full volume on MBP (M1/2020) for extended period of times damage the internal speakers?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 11:23 PM PDT

Wondering if I should be wary or worried about playing my Spotify music on these speakers at full volume for an extended amount of time.

What justification can I give to my place of work to give me a Max instead of Hp

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 12:15 AM PDT

So I'm working at a place where a lot of my work involves adobe creative suite primarily the basics - photoshop, illustrator, and premiere pro. Including a lot of communications work: editing, content, writing, content creation.

I am trying to justify the use the institution giving me a MacBook over a pc and would really like some help on justifying it. Apparently Mac is just better isn't reason enough.

Anyone able to help? Would really appreciate it!

    MacBook Air 2018 Thermals

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 09:07 PM PDT

My MacBook Air 2018 runs pretty warm, I think it's throttling too. I've considered two options for keeping temps down, one is macs fan control but it already gets kind of loud. The other is applying thermal paste inside between the CPU & the bottom plate so I can use the bottom and a heat sink. I've never modded an Apple product though & I know it can be a pain. What's your recommendation?

Is the 2015 Macbook Pro still good in 2021?

Did I make a good purchase? 2015 Macbook Pro

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 04:49 PM PDT

So I bought an early 2015 13 inch Macbook Pro for $350. It was bought new in 2017, and the seller said that it had barely been used. There are no issues with it. My question is: Did I make a good purchase? I'm coming from a $200 HP computer.

Did I make a huge mistake getting 16'' Pro instead of the 13'' M1 Pro? What are the differences for a casual user?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 05:06 AM PDT

Hey everyone, my company asked me for my preferred macbook size and I wanted a 16'' one. Later on I realized the 13'' model was actually the M1 model and the 16'' was the intel one. Did I miss out on anything huge? I generally use external apps like Discord etc. and I play just a little video games. Should I try to exchange it?

Is it worth it to replace my macbook 12 inch (2017)’s battery for USD270?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 05:35 AM PDT

I have a Macbook 12 inch 2017 edition with 512GB storage. My Macbook's battery has been draining so fast for quite some time now and suddenly recently a warning "service recommended" popped up. Is it worth it to get the battery replaced for USD270? Or should I maybe wait a bit more and save up to buy a new macbook?

    256gb new ou 512gb refurbished?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 07:41 AM PDT

Hi, i've decided to buy a Macbook air 2020 but i was worried that the basic model with 256gb wouldn't be enough since I pretend to use this machine for 5 years or more. I'm a light user, don't store to much image or video files so, for now, the 256gb would be enough, considering that I have external drives to use, but i don't know how it would do for the upcoming years. Also, apple is selling a refurbished 512gb model for just $60 more, so i don't know if it is worth not getting a new machine for that.

Is there a way to disable the microphone permanently on a macbook pro?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 10:31 AM PDT

I have a work macbook, and for some reason every time I disable the mic input in System Preferences, it turns itself back on a few mins later.

Is there a way to disable the internal mic driver?

I wonder how many tech illiterate folks bought an Intel MacBook after the M1 was available at a lower cost because they assumed expensive intel is better

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 03:35 PM PDT

I feel bad for anyone who got an intel shortly before the M1 was available, or after. This M1 chip lasts forever on battery, and it doesn't get hot unlike the intel

    Weird mouse situation

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 08:53 AM PDT

So i use the mouse on my macbook and it works perfectly fine except for the fact that it wont work in the top right corner when I am in chrome. It wont let me add a 6th tab, nor will it let me click on the 5th tab. For instance, if i move the third tab to the right and make it the 5th tab then i wont be able to open that one. It wont register the top right corner of the screen on any tab either

How do I get desktop audio to work in OBS?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 04:40 AM PDT

Hello. I'm trying to do some light retro game streaming with my MacBook Air. My Lenovo laptop has been giving me problems lately, so I'm trying to learn if I can make this work on my Mac, which has been a backup laptop mostly.

When setting up OBS, I notice there's no option for Desktop Audio. OBS only recognizes the mic audio. Anyone have a solution?

    Side car experience?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 01:52 AM PDT

Hi, I'm thinking of getting an iPad to use sidecar with my Mac and to take notes.

Just wanted to hear existing owners what is there experience with it. From what I've heard latency is pretty much non existent but no one really talks about the battery drain which is what I'm concerned about. I'd imagine it take a pretty significant hit since it has to compress and video and transmit it. So I'm hesitant to buy an iPad to use that feature. Using a secondary screen on the go might result in a mandatory charger.

Even better if you use it with an M1 Macbook as that is what I'd be using it with, have heard it overheating previous intel MacBooks too, especially on calls.

I ask this because with the new iPad os and macOS there is a new feature called universal control, which allows you to move your mouse cursor to an iPad and interact with it that way. If sidecar is good enough in terms of performance and power draw I think I'd save money and stick with buying a base iPad Air. If not was thinking of buying the base iPad Pro and not using sidecar feature at all. I'd use universal control to open all my tabs there. 4GB of ram is not quite enough for web browsing, hence the pro as it has 8GB. That way not only the performance is better but should drain much less power since you are using each device independently.

    Thanks!

Edit: It seems there are quite a few reports about high memory usage with sidecar, as frequent as a few months ago, intel and M1 alike. Is this still an issue? Apparently consumes 1GB an hour which is pretty concerning.

So I've seen that in the US, you are able to pay an annual fee for applecare for new Macs. Was just wondering whether this is possible in the UK?

Base model M1 MBA software development

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 01:32 AM PDT

Any other software developers out there with a 8gb/256gb M1 MacBook Air? I'm asking because I've been reading about the memory swap issue and have read many different takes in it. Some people say that having 16gb or RAM decreases swap usage, but others say it makes no difference.

Currently, I've tested mine with running vs code, Intellij, running a react app and a backend server, postman, having multiple tabs open in Chrome, Spotify, and some other small apps. Ive experienced no slowdown whatsoever. The highest I've seen my memory usage go was in the yellow, and the swap memory varies between 500mb to 1.5gb

I got this on sale, so upgrading to 16gb ram would be more than just $200 for me. It doesn't seem like I need it, but I worry about ssd health. Maybe I'm just being paranoid and I should stop reading the whole swap memory debacle online and stay away from activity monitor unless something warrants a look.

    Any thoughts?
