Posted: 30 Oct 2021 02:12 PM PDT I know lots of post have been 'fanboying' about these machines. Perhaps you can add me to this list. Anyways, I replaced (passed down) my MBP 16 Intel for a 16 M1 Pro. I have been using since Monday. No fan sound (noise?) The perception of having occasionally to constant fan noise was part of my experience when using my Intel MBP. I mostly do browsing and some office stuff. Today, I actually had to combine a few 720/1080 movies clips in final cut and also used handbrakes to convert some AVI to mp4. All cores were (shortly) involved, which would have normally mean some loud noise, but it didn't. It really feels like going from a petrol car to a electric car, the first impressions require some perception adjustment (each time). Heat The intel MBP would become quite hot just above the keyboard regardless what I did, and very hot when doing a bit more CPU/GPU intensive stuff. Having the mbp on my lap was also noticeably warm. With the workload I do now, the M1 MBP is cool, a bit warmer than when off. I feel it is much more attractive to type from my lap than before. This also is quite a new experience, after being so used to having warm/hot notebooks when in use. Battery Having been using iStats, I would often check how much power usage it uses when on battery. I tried to maximise it by turning some apps off to avoid the dGPU being turned on. The enigma would be the intel chip, sometimes it would draw 15w other times much higher. It was hard to predict how much time I would have, it would change from 5-7 to suddenly 4 hours. And I am not doing 'heavy' tasks. It did become much better after using the low power mode in macOS 12, where it seems to do it more automatically However with the m1 seems to be much more efficient with my 'normal' day to day apps (safari, mail, notes), and often only the 2 efficiency cores are being used (the other 6-8 remain quite dormant). So battery predictability is much better, so less worry that suddenly the machine does something in the 'background' and you realise it is almost of juice. I am sure more people experience the same. I do wonder whether I am in the minority for 'not 'using the 16" as a constant content creating machine (as it might seem from all the YT reviews). The m1 pro is an overkill for my usage (similar to the previous intel i9), but they don't offer anything lower. I am happy to not have jumped on the MBA M1, which would have been great performance wise, but screen would have been too small (an not enough ports!) [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Oct 2021 07:19 AM PDT So I got the new Macbook Pro M1 16inch (Pro cpu, base model). I recently bought those small tiny Anker PowerPort nano III (20 watts) usb-c chargers. I have a few in my house, so I decided to plug my Macbook Pro in it using the MagSafe III cable that came with it expecting it not to work. But not only it's working, but it can keep my computer fully charged. I'm not running anything crazy, but watching 4K videos on Youtube and other lite usages have been fine. I'm quite amazed at how energy efficient those new laptops are. As a side note, does anyone have managed to hear the fan? I have run some games, benchmark, etc. and I have yet to have them turn on. Edit: Thanks all for your feedback, now you got me curious, i need to get the cable to try with the original 5 watts charger. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Oct 2021 01:05 AM PDT Just confused about apple's choice for "space grey" I mean for my AW6 the space grey is more black than grey. Then for IP13P you have graphite which is space greyish But the space grey for m1 iPad Pro and the new 2021 16" MBP don't match at all. Anyone else bothered by this? First world problems haha. I wonder if the m1 iPad pros and the new MBP silvers have this sort of difference in colour too. [link] [comments]

PSA: New Macbook Pro FALD display means battery life is significantly improved by using darker UI Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:10 AM PDT On my 16in base model, changed my wallpaper to pure black. On full brightness and sitting idle desktop, it uses only 3 watts of power. Switching to full screen app with a lot of white (i.e. mail message), using 12 watts. Shrinking mail to fill only part of the screen, 8 watts. 100w/h battery makes that a range of 33 hours down to 8 just by changing content on screen. Also for reference, minimum brightness uses 2.4 watts regardless of what's on screen. So, less than 1 watt is needed on MAX brightness just to light up the dock, menu bar, and a few desktop icons. That's truly insane. So, if you want maximum battery life, stay in dark mode and consider black wallpaper. Up to 4x better battery life (in extreme example). Obviously though, if you're hitting the CPU/GPU hard, this doesn't matter as much since the chip can push 30+ watts and blow the display numbers away. I measured watts using MenuBar Stats application. It's pretty accurate from what I've seen by comparing it to battery remaining estimate. [link] [comments]
Macbook Pro M1 Max 64GB 32‑Core GPU first impressions: Amazing Hardware, brittle Software Posted: 30 Oct 2021 07:10 AM PDT I received my new MacBook yesterday. I upgraded from a 2020 i5 MacBook which performs really badly and crashes and freezes all the time. These are my first impressions: KeyboardThe keyboard is nice and feels just as good as on the 13 inch MacBook. The keys on the 14 inch model are a bit bigger – 1.6x1.6 cm compared to 1.5x1.5 centimeters on the 13 inch model. The size of the escape key also increased and the fn key now also switches input languages, if you have set multiple input languages. I was never someone who disliked the touch bar, but actually now that it's gone I feel it's better this way. It didn't get a lot of love from apple anyway and now I don't have to look where to press if I want to skip a music track or something. I kind of miss the volume feedback when pressing the volume buttons though, like they had in the older MacBooks. PerformanceThe performance is truly life changing for me. I had to do a lot of 4k video editing recently and exporting a particular 30 second video could take about 2 minutes on the i5 MacBook. Now it only takes 7 seconds. Running Windows 11 in Parallels also feels very smooth, it doesn't seem like I'm running something in a VM at all. The way I use it, the MacBook definitely get's a little warm, but not uncomfortably warm and I haven't heard the fans yet :) I didn't have time to test XCode yet, but I'm really looking forward to the reduced compile times. SpeakersThe speakers are even better than the already great speakers in the 2020 model and listening to spatial audio tracks in Apple music was more impressive than I anticipated! DisplayThe display looks great. The bigger screen size feels quite comfortable, and the additional vertical pixels on top of the screen seem nice. When booting you may notice the backlight bleeding around the Apple logo a bit, but during usage I didn't notice any problems. AFAIK I haven't yet used an App that makes use of pro motion, so I'm curious how this will look like, once I see it. I tried to test peak brightness with a HDR video on youtube, but I didn't notice greater brightness like I've seen in reviews. I probably haven't found the right video yet? SoftwareThe 3rd party software I tried works without problems so far, but Apples software seems quite brittle. I've noticed that the overall quality of Apples software has been getting worse for a while now, unfortunately this is also the case when using their latest products. I had background processes that "stopped working" a couple of times, and at one point my machine just crashed hard (kernel panic) causing a reboot. Apple music seems to be especially bad, since it's often unresponsive or otherwise buggy (often I can not select "Listen Now"). MacOS also often asked me for my password for my CalDav account, even though I provided it every time – it seems to have stopped now though. Final ThoughtsOverall this seems like an excellent laptop for creative professionals, I just really hope Apple will focus on making their Software more stable in the future. [link] [comments]
Contacts Journal CRM for Mac - v3.0 Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:10 PM PDT I recently launched a major update to the "Contacts Journal CRM" app on the Mac App Store. What's New

4-year iPad Pro user trying the 14-inch MacBook Pro: discussion and thoughts Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:27 AM PDT This is a long post, so bear with me. TLDR: I'm a long-time iPad-only user trying to use a MacBook full-time for the first time in 4 years. Any suggestions for what I should try, test, or comment on? I've been using an iPad Pro as my primary/only computer since late 2017. My last MacBook was the 2016 MacBook Pro 16-inch with Touch Bar, sold after the second-generation iPad Pro was released in 2017. 2017-2019 was mostly me using the iPad Pro for games, social media, and other entertainment. I did some paid photography on the side, editing on iPad, but it was never a full business. I was in the Navy at that time, so the iPad worked great for my needs. Also, using the Apple Pencil for drawing electrical diagrams at work was a bonus. Now, I've been working for AppleInsider for the past two years, still exclusively using an iPad Pro. It's been interesting performing all of my needed workflows from this computer, but I have been eyeing Apple's push into custom silicon for Macs. The advancements of macOS making it more like iPadOS are also enticing. So, I decided to grab up a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro processor to try using a MacBook Pro full-time for work and personal use. I'll spend the next month trying to implement all of my workflows and improve upon them using the Mac's abilities, thanks to it having more options for automation and apps. This test will all culminate in a write-up for AppleInsider sometime in December (maybe, timeline pending). I'm going to do a full comparison of using a 12.9-inch iPad Pro versus a 14-inch MacBook Pro. Ultimately, I want to see if I decide to shift to macOS for work or return the 14-inch MacBook Pro within the return window and keep working from the iPad. I've been setting up the 14-inch MacBook Pro for the last day, which has been a lot. I forgot how much you could do/ have to do to get these things up and running. The only way this machine replaces the iPad Pro, also costing me $2,100 in the process, is to reasonably and consistently do better work on the MacBook, improve my work routines, and actually like using it. So far, I find the iPad is just more of a joy to use. I prefer something about it, but I can't put my finger on what it is. In fact, I felt the need to type this post on the iPad Pro, even with the MacBook Pro sitting right next to me. I can remove this last part if it's too close to self-promotion, but I won't put a link, so maybe it cancels out. I'll be commenting on this process on Twitter so that you can keep an eye on my progress and thoughts there. When I make a decision, I'll likely post about it here with more personal thoughts since the comparison on AppleInsider will be more technical in nature. I hope this post doesn't violate some rule or other. I'm just excited to try this out and share my thoughts. Think this is a worthy test? What sort of comparisons and information would you be interested in? I can answer questions or go into detail in the comments. Please keep rude commentary to yourself. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Interesting issue with the new MacBook Pros + ProMotion Posted: 30 Oct 2021 09:08 PM PDT With ProMotion active the new MacBook Pros appear to take longer to recognize when a screen is active, increasing lag when switching between screens. While barely noticeable this does make for a more frustrating user experience. For example, when trying to mute/pause videos between browser windows quickly commands will be ignored or applied to the previous window. This effect is eliminated when switching to a 60 Hertz refresh rate. Video of phenomena: https://imgur.com/a/h3G3qXG The time taken for the window to become active (the top turning grey to black) is longer with ProMotion than 60 Hz. [link] [comments]
In case you were thinking about using Delivery with Setup Posted: 30 Oct 2021 12:16 PM PDT I would not recommend it. I waited the entire window of time just to receive a cancellation of my order. When I called Apple they said that it said I had changed my mind and I had canceled the order. I explained to them that I hadn't done that and they said the only thing I could do was re-order the phone. I will now be waiting a month for another phone 🙃 Just in case any of you are thinking about using this method this is something to think about!! [link] [comments]
PSA: If your AirPods are randomly cutting out on Monterey, try this Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:10 PM PDT (Mods, I was unsure if I should post this somewhere else, such as in r/AppleHelp. Sorry if I didn't pick the right place!) Hi! I was part of the Monterey Beta, and I instantly noticed that my AirPods (and AirPods Pro) were randomly cutting out for 0.5-1.0s at a time. This issue was driving me insane. Recently, I believe I've found a fix for the issue, so I thought I'd share this here, because the problem is present in the official "1.0" release of Monterey. Hope this post was helpful to you! [link] [comments]
