New M1 Air won't connect to 5GHz WiFi network

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 10:31 PM PDT

This one is throwing me for a loop. Fiancee and I got brand new M1 Airs. Hers connected just fine to our router and everything, but mine won't connect to my 5GHz network at all -- it just keeps asking for the password when manually imputting and when trying the whole "get password from your iPhone" thing. The 2.4GHz network works fine. I've rebooted both my Macbook and my router multiple times, but it won't actually connect.

    Any suggestions?

When do you charge your MacBook?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 08:57 PM PDT

Hello MB community! At what percentage do you hook your MBs to their charger? Do you also keep your device plugged in even when it's 100% (fully) charged? Genuinely curious.

Keyboard replacement for 2020 Macbook pro

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 10:40 PM PDT

Just wondering. I've been seeing its ~$300 for one keycap (is that USD or CAD?), so how much does apple charge for the entire keyboard? I think this one has the butterfly keys but I'm not sure

I broke the right arrow key trying to clean it but its still functioning when I put a keyboard protector sleeve on it so I'm thinking of just ordering clips and keys off ali or ebay or smth. But I'm still just curious to know how much the Geniusbar charges, ty!

Has anyone used this with M1 Macbook?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 03:02 PM PDT

    Hey All,

I am doing research on something someone mentioned they use on an intel based MacBook pro so they have Windows 10 option to boot from when needed. I think this concept is really cool over the use of VM since USB-C dongles are normally used for ethernet internet connection already.

The guy mentioned he has 128GB m.2 drive in the enclosure, he uses the option menu on startup on his MacBook pro, to boot into windows 10 on the external drive in the enclosure.

    https://www.amazon.com/Hub-Enclosure-ZEXMTE-USB-Docking/dp/B08JCCPQZD

The reason I am asking if M1 users have tried it, is because I know some M1s have had issues with dongles bricking their MacBook.

Applecare worth it? Does it work internationally?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:13 AM PDT

I am going to be purchasing my first MacBook (m1 MBA) and was wondering if it was worth getting applecare? What I am worried about is that I primarily live in Europe, would applecare in the US still work in western Europe or does it have to be done in the country it's purchased? I am going to be purchasing my laptop here in the US but then I am leaving back to Europe.

Also from what I gather, it's not advised to buy keyboard covers or cases, can anyone recommend me a good sleeve for my MBA?

    USB-C Hub Reccomendations

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:35 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm 23 recent college grad and now have a MacBook Pro M1. I just recently bought an MX (Mac) keys keyboard and wireless mouse. I'm pretty detail oriented and do various things with spreadsheets and website design applicable stuff on the side. I have two monitors at my home office station. Any recommendations for a USB-C hub from experience? I am looking for two HDMI ports and Ethernet port and 1 USB A & 1 USB C port. I can do just 1HDMI port as well and get a splitter, but mostly want one with ethernet and HDMI. Anything is appreciated! Thanks!

A little sad that butterfly keyboard was ditched

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 04:32 PM PDT

Since my MacBook pro 2018 is dead and the repair is way too expensive, I want to get a new macbook air 2020. However, I just discovered that the keyboard has been changed to the magic keyboard in 2020 models🥲 I really liked the feeling of butterfly keyboard, quick and crisp. It's sad that they can't make it reliable enough to keep the design.

Which MacBook should be better for my needs?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 04:12 PM PDT

My current laptop (a 2017 MacBook Pro) has developed too many issues that will be too costly to repair, so I'm looking into getting a new machine. The two options I've narrowed are:

    • A (refurbished) 2020 13" MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i5 processor (with the touch bar)
    • A 13" MacBook Air with the M1 chip

Both of them are pretty much the same price. I'm leaning much more towards the first option, because I've always been a MacBook Pro user (I've never had a MacBook Air before) and it feels much more in line with what I've always had. I also use Ableton to produce music and have read how certain programs have not yet been adapted for use on the M1 products.

However, I have read many reviews about how the new Airs with the M1 chip are so much faster and more robust than their predecessors. I also don't really care whether I have the touch bar or not (I currently have a MacBook Pro that doesn't have it).

As far as what I need my machine for, I use Ableton Suite to produce music and will also need to use Adobe Creative Suite for work. However, I'm not really a gamer and don't really do anything else that would require too much usage aside from regular things (Internet, Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, etc.).

Any advice is appreciated as I'm having trouble choosing!

Transferring files from old MacBook while dealing with kernel panic and where to buy new one?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 04:04 PM PDT

Yesterday I made a post on here about my 2017 12" MacBook with constant kernel panic - took it to the Apple Store and discovered it's got faulty RAM.

I'd rather just buy a new laptop than pay the $500 repair and have decided on the new MacBook Air. I never backed up my hard drive and will need to transfer everything over while dealing with my old laptop restarting because of the kernel panic.

Factoring the constant/random kernel panic restarts, will I be be able Time Machine/Migration Assistant or should I stick to just transferring over small batches of files onto an external drive manually? If possible, I'd like to use Migration Assistant since that's seems to be the easiest option. Also, I've got thousands of tabs up on separate browsers - would I be able to transfer those over using TM/MA? I would assume there's no keeping them just by transferring over files manually.

As for purchasing the new MacBook Air, I'm interested in getting the model with the 2TB SSD which from what I can tell is only sold from Apple's website (not in stores), B&H and Adorama. Does anyone know of any other authorized resellers that carry this model? Unfortunately Google's shopping results weren't any help here. Amazon, Best Buy and Costco's websites aren't showing it at all.

Which M1 to get coming from 2014?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 12:44 PM PDT

My 2014 macbook pro's display just died on me and I am currently using an external display on it because the local repair guy quoted me $600 to fix it which isn't happening lol. I can make the monitor work for awhile but it's super inconvenient as I can't bring it to work with me anymore. The regular 2020 M1 is already a huge upgrade from my current laptop and the prices seem decent. Do you think I should potentially wait until november to see what the new M1X updates bring or just buy a new one now?

I run music production programs, but nothing too intense and just use it for regular video calls and work otherwise.

Can keyboard cover damage MacBook screen?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:58 AM PDT

I recently got a 0.1 mm think keyboard cover for my 2016 13 inch MacBook Pro(non-touchbar). Is the keyboard cover thick enough to possibly damage the screen when I close the laptop?

Wiping and reinstalling macOS on an Air

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:13 AM PDT

    hello,

i have a quite old (2014 maybe?) macbook air that i would like to wipe and reset. this device has been through quite a bit, i originally bought it from my school and since it has seen at least two or three complete resets. right now it is semi functional, by which i mean it runs windows 10 through bootcamp. however it only has around 2gb free space (in windows 10) and it doesn't switch back to macOS.

is there a way to fix this or completely reset? i would be okay with going back to macOS if i had the free space back. (it's not because i have a lot of things installed but because of how much space boot camp has been allocated)

i do have the master password / unlock / whatever that you put in at the screen with a big lock symbol and a password box. (the root key? idk haha) [edit: it's called the firmware password, i remember now.]

Faulty Macbook... HELP? Consumer Right's Act etc

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 04:12 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm having a hell of a time with Apple and I'm looking for some advice. I have a 2017 macbook " which until recently has done pretty damn well. I sent it in this last month for a keyboard repair, and it came back with a damaged screen and lid, and a battery that ... didn't last as long as it once had. No problem in regards to the screen and lid, the guys at apple were happy to sort those out, but argued with me about the battery, claiming i'd have to pay for that repair, even though it only became a problem after I'd gotten the laptop back.

I'm just wondering whether I can make a claim under the Consumer Right's act? I have spoke to several Apple Specialists and they all say different things, trying to determine whether a trip to the Apple Store would be easier (with the macbook of course!)

Any help would be really appreciated, or advice!

    Trackpad problem

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 07:46 AM PDT

Hey, i bought the MBA a couple of months ago and realized that whenever I'm using the trackpad for longer than 10 minutes, my fingertips start to burn. Feels like i am touching a stove but when i put my whole hand on the trackpad it feels cold to the touch.

Any solutions to this? Perhaps a skin could fix the problem? I find the trackpad not "slippery" enough so when my fingers get a bit sweaty it starts to hurt.

Right now used MPB 16s (i9, 32GB and 1TB) are going for $2500 used on ebay. How much would resale drop when the new M1X MBP 16s are released?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 04:32 AM PDT

I plan on selling my MBP 16 (i9 2.3GHz, 32GB RAM & 1TB SSD) when the new M1X MBP are released later this year.

I plan on getting an M1X 16, with either 16GB or 32GB RAM & 1TB HD which I anticipate would cost between $2500-3000.

I'm worried about the resale value dropping when these new M1X beasts drop. How worried I should I be. I certainly don't expect it to drop too much, but I still want close to $2500 for this machine which is in impeccable condition with less than 100 battery cycles.
