Is there a good reason Apple uses Yelp?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:44 PM PDT

Yelp is a horrible company rife with corruption and e-racketeering.

I absolutely hate how the native maps app (Apple Maps) on all Apple products uses yelp for reviews, photos, etc.

It is obnoxious to have to download a 3rd party app to view photos of businesses when using Apple Maps. Same for reviews, I can't look at the reviews unless I use Yelp.

Apple needs to integrate Google reviews, or forget yelp all together and create their own review platform on Apple Maps.

Yelp is bad, hurts small business, and is annoying as all get out when trying to use Apple Maps. The Yelp app also skims huge amounts of personal data.

I should not have to download a 3rd party review app that steals my data to look at a picture of a business in Apple Maps.

The fact that this is my least favorite part about Apple products may be a good thing depending on how you look at it, but it's truly annoying. I use Apple Maps to search for businesses/restaurants all the time.

Edit: if Apple could even integrate it in a way where I did not need to have Yelp installed, I probably wouldn't care they used them at all. It's just the fact that one of their (major) first party apps, requires a third party app to be downloaded in order to unlock all functionality of said app. Very non Apple like.

Very strange Apple store experience today

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:29 PM PDT

My wife and I went to an Apple store today to make a purchase. My wife knew exactly what she wanted: iPad Mini - slate gray - 64GB - WiFi only. She approached an Apple store employe with her request and was told she needed an appointment to purchase anything. Huh?? I told her they must think you need help setting up the device (she does not need any help, just wants to buy the iPad). She then asked another employee, making it clear she didn't need setup, got the same response - You need an appointment. The busy store seemed to be operating as normal, no Covid restrictions.

We went home and she ordered the iPad from Amazon for $15 off the Apple price.

What the heck... You can't just walk in and buy something??

Apple: The King of Friction-Free UX, or is it... Share your UX frustrations!

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 07:16 PM PDT

Apple is the leader of UX. Smoothness of animations, quick loading times, general look and feel. It is so apparent when switching back to an Android device, or a windows PC, especially.

However, I feel they are slipping in some regards! Here are two things that annoy me frequently, and I am surprised they have not fixed them.

    1. When opening my MacBook Air, running Big Sur, I begin typing my password, and moments later the OS highlights the selection I am typing and as I am finishing typing it overwrites what I already have typed.
    2. When wearing a face-mask, or it is dark out, I need to manually enter my passcode on my iPhone instead of triggering FaceID. If I type my passcode too fast it will miss characters! Often it thinks I have just entered 5 when I have clicked 6 in quick succession. This is easily reproducible, and it has no reason to be this way. Try it yourself!

Add your frustrations, or comment on mine :D

No yellow dot before siri activates

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:25 AM PDT

Siri knows when I call it by 'Hey Siri', so the yellow dot should always be there on the iPhone's menu bar.

    Why that isn't the case?

Even if the microphone just filters 'Hey Siri', but still that is always on, so shouldn't there be yellow dot always?

This might be a stupid question, but idk why I felt like asking it out of curiosity

    Thanks in advance

    Android/Google User Considering Switch

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:41 AM PDT

As the title mentions, I am a current Android/Samsung/Google user, considering a switch into the Apple ecosystem. I used to own iPhones up through the 6, when I decided to make a change for the Google Pixel, which I absolutely loved. I now use a Samsung phone, and a Chromebook laptop.

My laptop is now getting to the point where its time for an upgrade, and I've begun seriously considering purchasing a MacBook (most likely Air). I realize that in doing so, it just makes sense to also move to iPhone.

I know that everyone here are obviously Apple fans, but I was wondering if everyday users wouldn't mind sharing whether you believe the high price-point is worth it (and maybe what makes it worth it), and I'd also be interested in hearing if any Apple users have any thoughts as to why switching might not be the best idea? In other words, any reason NOT to completely switch over?

    Appreciated!

Apple Pay Cash outside the US?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 05:37 AM PDT

This feature is at least a couple of years old now, but it doesn't seem like anyone outside the US can use it. I'm pretty surprised given we'd get updates frequently about new markets Apple Pay itself would be rolling out into, but for this feature it's been radio silence.
