External monitor recommendations? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 04:26 PM PDT My workhorse 2012 27" iMac died a couple weeks ago, and the teeny MBP screen just isn't cutting it for all my needs. I've been waiting for new new larger iMac, but sadly it sounds like it may be until next year. I'm wondering if I can just add a 27" monitor to my MBP until the new one comes out. I'd like to ideally keep it around $500, but my son is saving for a PC, so if it would be something he could use for his gaming setup after I'm done, it would be okay to go a little higher and he could pay the difference. Would need to play nice with a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) - Any suggestions? Thanks! [link] [comments]
M1 MacBook Air running at 80C+ under normal use Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:43 AM PDT Normal use during my regular workload. Granted, my use is a lot of multitasking, with some heavy software, but should I be concerned about the system staying at these temperatures for extended periods of time? Naturally, this also means there are fairly frequent short bursts of mid to high 90s when I'm doing quick heavy tasks. Should I be concerned about that either? Obviously, I can change my workflow and reduce multitasking, but I would rather not have to do that. [link] [comments]

Using MacBook with an Android device - anyone doing so? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 03:13 PM PDT Hey guys. I've been wondering if anyone's decided to use a MacBook with an Android device, as opposed to bundling it with an iPhone. If yes - what were the reasons? I recently bought a MacBook, and I'm trying to decide whether to stay with Android and upgrade my device, or buy an iPhone... frankly, I love Android and I find it to be much more useful than iOS, but I feel like I would miss a lot by not getting an iPhone, in terms of the ecosystem integration... any thoughts? MacBook Air M1 vs 2019 MacBook Pro i7? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:01 AM PDT Hey guys! Question. I'm trying to flip my Ryzen 3800x desktop to get a MacBook Air M1. Hoping i could sell it for $1800 even though the parts are only worth $700 individually on eBay (taking advantage of the inflated market). I have an opportunity for a straight swap for a 2019 i7 2.6 GHz 16 GB RAM with AMD Radeon Pro 5300M MacBook Pro from a friend. I noticed the refurb prices for these are $1800. Would I actually be better off doing that instead of a $1200 M1 Air? [link] [comments]
MacBook Air M1 battery question Posted: 22 Jul 2021 10:29 AM PDT Hi. I have an M1 MacBook Air for almost six months now. Lately battery health dropped to 99% (70 cycles). I'd like to ask if it's normal and what could be done to maintain battery health. [link] [comments]
I burst my own bubble (buying a MacBook Air M1) Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:54 PM PDT Sorry this post isn't that interesting. I'm a Windows/Linux user who is buying a macbook for the first time in about 10 years. I was super excited to finally splash the cash on a Macbook Air M1 and opted for the 16gb upgrade (extra $200aud, ouch!). I was excited and ready to receive my computer at worst by the end of the week. BUT.... just by "adding" the 16gb, it pushed my delivery time out by 3 weeks!!! WTF? Shouldn't I be getting it sooner by paying a premium for the addon? It's not like it takes so long to procure the different version, it's literally just pulling a different piece of hardware off the shelf. Why does it take so long? Anyway, I got over my disappointment and will have to wait what will feel like an eternity. Until yesterday I was browsing Amazon and to add insult to injury I saw the M1 Air selling for $150aud cheaper! I searched on there, but it looks like it's only for the 8gb version, so I'm still stuck with my order, but goddamn I'm off to a bad start :( Maybe we've been spoilt in the modern age of same-day deliveries and instant gratification, I dunno. 2021 MBA to old Apple Thunderbolt Display WITH power pass through? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 07:56 AM PDT Is this possible? I found an adapter for mini display port with a usbc power slot but it says not compatible with the thunderbolt monitors. The Apple adapter says it doesn't support power pass through. I also found the StarTech adapter but it sounds like it only supports power from the laptop to the peripheral device, not from the monitor to the laptop? I only have two usbc ports on the Air and I'd like to connect my old thunderbolt Apple monitor (with charging) using only one of them so I have a free one as needed, but not finding much. Would like to avoid a multi port adapter if possible. [link] [comments]
Is it time to upgrade? (2015 to M1). Posted: 22 Jul 2021 07:53 AM PDT Howdy folks. Wanted to get your input on this question. Currently have a A1502 and frankly other than "the battery life could be better" and the 128gb ssd situation, no complaints about it. Minor enough usage, mostly web and office, and not every day. The one factor that's concerning to me is while I am slated to get Monterey on it, it's also the bottom of the support list, so I fully anticipate being dropped from support come next big release. There is always dosdude1, and I am familiar with his work thanks to my 2011 Mini - but that's less than an ideal solution. Currently looking like I can probably get around $350 for my 2015. I would be interested in the 8/256 Pro - so ~$1100 right now. I have the $800 to make up the difference, but not really sure it's $800 wisely spent for a laptop that gets maybe 2-3 hours of use a week. The intent would be to keep it until it's dead (or out of support). Another wrinkle in my situation is that in a few months I am going abroad for a bit and anticipate the laptop picking up a bit more usage (at least for a couple months). This is mostly due to shipping my primary desktop by sea - and that takes 3 months, and I don't want to ship it ahead because I am actively using it before my departure. And if I have to replace it there - it would cost equivalent of $1500 USD. Why Pro vs Air? So $200 difference, and it's not about performance - the Air's 7 GPU cores don't bother me. I am a little sus about not having a fan. I don't have feelings about the touch bar one way or the other. I do appreciate the better screen, mic, and speakers on the Pro. Also however slight the difference, the larger battery and faster charger are a nice bonus. DISCLAIMER: Just last week i went through this exercise of Air vs Pro for a family member - also an extreme casual use scenario but went for the Pro for the above reasons. So I guess there's a couple choices.... let me know what's your take.

Has the ssd wear problem resolved? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 06:56 AM PDT So I plan to use my macbook air for software and web development and I want it to last at least 7 years(3-4 years as primary device and the rest as secondary). So will it last till the time or will it wear out? I plan to buy it with 16gb RAM and 512 gb ssd. Has it been resolved? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 02:59 AM PDT Hi guys, as of next month I will be switching from pc to mac for the first time. I am getting Macbook Air and I need some advice regarding docks. I am planning on using it mostly as a „desktop" while being able to quickly get it out as needed. Thunderbolt and power delivery to laptop, external monitor, mouse and keyboard, extra storage, ethernet, speakers and some spare usb ports a must. Sd card, and power button would be nice addition. I've doing some research to find dock that would meet my needs but wasn't able to find one for time being. I hope you may have some recommendations. I've seen so many docks I can't decide and when I see something interesting it often is unavaiable. Also I'm from Poland so shipping to EU is required ;) [link] [comments]
Need pirate apps for apple silicon m1. Posted: 22 Jul 2021 12:24 PM PDT I know it's not advisable to use pirate apps, and it's also unethical. I somehow bought a MacBook on emi, so now I don't have any money left to buy software. I need the following app optimised for m1 -- Ulysses Final cut Logic x Lightroom Photoshop Parallels Any download link is very much appreciated. [link] [comments]
MacBook Air 2015 MagSafe Charger Posted: 22 Jul 2021 01:44 AM PDT Can someone please suggest a reliable website other than Apple in the US/UK from where I can purchase a charger for my MBA 2015 13 inch. The Apple websites sells it for $100 and I think that's too much for something this old :( TIA! [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:13 AM PDT Need help. Do I need a higher SSD or a higher RAM? Planning to purchase either a 16GB/256SSD or 8GB/512SSD. Whichever memory you think is better, will it go well with an MBA or an MBP? Example: 16GB/256SSD MBA works well because… or however you want to put it! I would appreciate your responses (: [link] [comments] |
