Mirrored external display, SideCar as extended Posted: 26 Jun 2021 01:41 AM PDT The screen of my MacBook Pro recently broke, and since it's a 2016 model, I rather wait for the new M1 (or M2) 16" MacBook Pro. So my only option now is to use my MacBook with an external display, in mirrored mode. This works great, however I would like to use SideCar on my iPad, to get some more screen space. But it doesn't seem possible to use my external screen as a mirrored display, and use my iPad as an additional display. Maybe I'm overlooking some option, but it seems to be either all are mirrored, or none are. [link] [comments]

What custom scripts/Automator actions do you use? Posted: 25 Jun 2021 01:34 PM PDT Recently I added "extract everything from sub-folders to main folder" apple script and I wonder what other people use. Do you have any Automator actions or apple script that you can not live without? [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Jun 2021 09:21 PM PDT Disclaimer - I am a Mac newbie. Only my windows machine, if I copy a file on my NAS device to the same NAS device in a different folder, it copies at a rate of 8 gb/sec using Explorer. Doing that same exact thing, on my Mac mini M1 using Finder, it copies at 1 Gbit. Basically I think it's forcing the file copy (and move) to go through the router. I've already been given the answer of "yeah dummy, it has to copy the files, that's why its so slow, duh". So Windows performs this operation at 8 gb/sec, and Big Sur is doing it at 80 mb/sec. I find it difficult to believe that using a NAS on a Mac can be this abysmal and I must be missing a setting somewhere. The windows machine, the Mac and the NAS are all connected to the same router. Any way to fix this? [link] [comments]
Free hand drawing tool in Preview markup has disappeared. Posted: 26 Jun 2021 12:30 AM PDT I just noticed that today the freehand drawing tool in Preview markup has just disappeared. It was there yesterday. It's the tool where you can draw any shape and vary the pressure on the trackpad to make the line fatter or thinner. No I only have one drawing tool and when you draw something it corrects the shape to what it thinks you want, but it doesn't work very well. Anyone else noticed this? (on MacOS10.15.7 (19H524) BTW) [link] [comments]
How to securely wipe out 2012 Mac Mini? Posted: 25 Jun 2021 05:54 PM PDT I deleted a partition in an old Mac Mini, without securely wiping it first. I can no longer go to the Recovery System to wipe the partition because it boots straight into the Recovery over the Internet system. How can I securely format the disk (zero fill, at least)? Any third party software or setting to copy windows 11 new undock/docking memorization feature? Posted: 25 Jun 2021 09:45 PM PDT Very curious on this as I plan to dock and undock a lot. it would be great to have all windows and workflows automatically go back to how it was arranged as soon as I plug back in [link] [comments]
FaceTime uses internal speakers in Big Sur Posted: 25 Jun 2021 05:44 PM PDT Setup: FaceTime switches to internal Mini speaker. Google says it is a known bug. Did anybody found a work around? [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Jun 2021 07:27 PM PDT Should I create a backup using Time Machine and then wipe everything up? I've never used TM so not sure what to expect. Will it only make backup of actual files or everything like system files? I want to start from 0, not just reinstall my current OS. I feel it is too slow, so just better start from scratch. TIA! Account locked out, possible FileVault issue Posted: 25 Jun 2021 12:39 PM PDT I have a MBP 2019 running more or less the latest Big Sur patch (can't get the exact version as I can't login) with FileVault enabled. Today after finishing up some work I ran a Tried the usual of resetting NVRAM/PRAM/SMC which I didn't expect to work anyway and am now trying the ".AppleSetupDone Trick" here https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/ir3b99/psa_catalina_applesetupdone_trick/ - I can boot into recovery mode, start the disk management tool and decrypt / mount the data volume using my password and browse my User directories etc via the terminal but I cannot locate this file anywhere in any of the locations mentioned online. Thought I'd nailed it with This seems like the best route of being able to create a new user so that I can at least get into the OS and then try resetting my main account. I'd rather not try resetting the password of my main account via recovery mode in-case I lose access entirely. Any ideas? Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
Video scrubbing capabilities on the Touch Bar disappear when I go full screen Posted: 25 Jun 2021 11:53 AM PDT Mac OS Big Sur MacBook Pro 16" So one of the things I actually find really useful about the Touch Bar is the feature that allows you to scrub through a video while it's playing in Safari, but whenever I switch to full screen mode, that option is replaced with just a play/pause and skip button. I've noticed that on the rare occasion the option to scrub lingers when I go full screen, but I feel like that might just be a happy glitch because it's super infrequent, and I haven't figured out what I do differently those times that it works. Does anyone know how to set the Touch Bar so that whenever I go full screen, I still always have the ability to scrub through the video? [link] [comments]
can i change the format of an ntfs drive to hfs without reformatting it? Posted: 25 Jun 2021 10:42 AM PDT not the end of the world if i can't, but, i'm sure it'll save me a bunch of time if i can. i've got an "old" (fairly young, just out of service) work drive that was ntfs for windows, that i've been using paragon to access, read and write. Deactivate Safari auto-download files Posted: 25 Jun 2021 10:36 AM PDT I can't find a way to make Safari open the files in the browser itself instead of downloading and opening it in Preview. Does anyone know if that's possible? I know at least in Firefox it's possible. [link] [comments]
2018 Mac Mini... Is it bricked? Posted: 25 Jun 2021 08:02 AM PDT I have a 2018 Mac Mini that I was (absentmindedly) restoring to factory. Nothing I haven't done before. I'm assuming I may have done something wrong this time. After wiping the drive in recovery assistant (I believe I erased everything - including the recovery partition), I tried reinstalling Big Sur but it failed at about 2/3 through with "An error occurred installing macOS". Rebooting after that instance it immediately went into internet recovery mode. Since then I've had a plethora of issues getting macOS reinstalled. - Internet recovery would not work. Would get a -1008F error. I found this was due to the fact I didn't have the mac un-enrolled from the beta program. Un-enrolling seemed to fix this, and I can now get internet recovery to get me to the recovery assistant. NOTE though, it seems I have to go through internet recovery EVERY SINGLE TIME I boot the machine, it's not keeping recovery assistant on the machine. Not sure if this is normal. - "ACTIVATION LOCK" would show up once I got into recovery assistant. I thought I had deleted it from my apple ID in "devices", but I found the mac was still showing up in "Find my iPhone". I deleted it and the activation lock went away. I can now get into disk utility, terminal, install Big Sur etc. - I'm assuming this device is still in secure boot, because Startup Security Utility shows "authentication needed", but also says no administrator was found. - I've wiped the SSD through disk utility before trying to reinstall macOS, but it ALWAYS fails at 2/3 through with "An error occurred installing macOS". I've even managed to run Big Sur setup from a USB created by my other Mac through terminal, but that also fails at 2/3 with the same error. I'm fairly stuck at this point. The only other thing I can find to try is to boot the mac into Target Disk Mode and copy the drive of another mac running Big Sur to it with CarbonCopy or something. I'm waiting on a USB C to C cable to show up from Amazon. My other machine is a M1 iMac so I'm not sure if this will even work. I was planning on selling the Mac Mini, and not planning on getting much for it, so I'm hesitant to take it to the Apple store. I've read some other instances of people having this issue and it looks like a lot of the time they just insist on replacing the logic board, which can't be cheap. I may try to use this as a learning experience as the machine is basically bricked to me at this point anyway and exhaust all efforts I can. [link] [comments]
Microsoft Remote Desktop Does Not Work On My New MacBook Pro M1 Chip Posted: 25 Jun 2021 01:56 PM PDT So I recently bought a new MacBook pro M1 chip. I had no problem using Microsoft Remote Desktop on my old MacBook Pro, but since using my new laptop, the app has been really inconsistent. I am sometimes able to connect to my work remote pc, but most of the time I get the following error: 'We couldn't connect to the remote PC because the PC can't be found. Please provide the fully-qualified name or the IP address of the remote PC, and then try again. Error code: 0x104". PLEASE someone tell me if they have been through this and how did they fix it. I've been trying to get it to work for the past week, but it has been so inconsistent. P.s: I have macOS Big Sur, version 11.4 [link] [comments]
Device connects and disconnects from Mac Posted: 25 Jun 2021 10:08 AM PDT When I plug in my iPhone to my Macbook, it repetitively connects and disconnects. I can't connect my phone. When I plug in my iPhone to a wall outlet, it charges perfectly. It also happens to every device and every cable. I tried to connect my iPhone to both USB ports of my Macbook, with many different Apple lightning cables and also my Anker cable (MFI certified), but the issue substains. Here everything I tried to resolve this issue (which failed by the way) : - I reset on my computer and my phone. - I reseted location and privacy of my phone (Devices rapidly disconnect/reconnect - Macbook Air Mid 2013). - I updated both my Mac and iPhone This has actually been an issue for a couple months but it randomly starts and stops working. Posted: 25 Jun 2021 07:25 AM PDT I was watching Linus Tech Tips video about Windows 11, where I heard the new Microsoft operating system will support hybrid architecture processors better. This gave me a thought, that maybe when Windows 11 comes out, Macs will experience the return of BootCamp as well. What do you folks think about it? [link] [comments] |
