Actual Storage in Macbook Air 256GB

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 11:06 AM PDT

    Hello,

Can anyone post their actual free storage in right out of the box new MacBook Air 256GB version. I reinstalled Mac right after buying a new machine and I think I have lesser storage now than when it came out of the box.

    Thanks!

I am looking to buy a macbook for college use but also light gaming use (minecraft, csgo). I don't really understand computer specs, so looking at everything i don't really know which is best.

Question about battery longevity in clamshell mode.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 01:19 PM PDT

Background: About a week ago I bought an M1 Mac mini and I'm considering returning it and getting an M1 MacBook Air (or pro but ill probably get a 16 gig air instead of 8 gig pro). I plan to use it docked to a full desktop setup a lot maybe most of the time.

Question: How badly will the battery life degrade if I leave it plugged into power most of the time? If the answer is significantly or worse has anyone found a good automated way to combat the problem? Also part of my question is how worried about this issue should I be?

USB-C or Thunderbolt Docks and High Refresh Rate Monitors

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 10:27 AM PDT

I have a M1 Macbook Air and I am looking to connect to my 240hz 1080p display (AW2521HF). I would like to do this with a dock but I am having a hard time finding some actual details or experiences where people have done this successfully. The monitor itself can do 240hz on either displayport or HDMI. Bandwidth wise I expect this to be similar to driving 4K @ 60hz, but without real world examples of a product doing this it is hard to confirm. My ideal solution would be a dock that can drive the monitor at 240hz while being a single cable solution to provide power back to the laptop and have extra connectivity (USB-A, ethernet, SD card reader).

Has anyone had any experiences driving high refresh rate monitors through thunderbolt or usb-c docks? Any recommended products?

    Why the dbrand love?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 12:44 PM PDT

I'm looking to skin my 16" MBPro. I see a lot of love for dbrand, but I'm wondering what makes them such a favorite. I'm seeing far less expensive alternatives from places like phantom skinz, stickybunny, and decalgirl. Is dbrand objectively worth it over the others?

MacBook Pro M1 crash for 1st time after 1 month usage with Xcode 8 hours per day. Normal?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 12:07 PM PDT

This is the first time I am using MacBook and develop 8 hours per day using Xcode.

All OS and Xcode are up to date.

I mostly only deal with UIKit and CoreData.

After 1 month usage, the MacBook crash for the first time, and recover after auto restart.

Since this is my first time using MacBook, I am not sure what is the quality expectation on the machine.

Is such crash rate considered normal?

So I got MacBook Pro M1 8GB/512GB for $1600 (sadly I couldn't get better deal in Tbilisi) and I realized although I'm not a heavy video editor or designer, the fact I use at work many tabs and email clients and also few Intel's side apps, 8GB at times hits the limit, so, I decided to search around someone with 16GB/512GB and see if he would swap with me, and hehe I found one guy who said give him my MBP + $350 and he would give me 16GB unit he has and won't mind get my 8GB.

I think although it's not a perfect deal, it's still good if thinking 1-3 years from now, I will have a decent powerful smooth MacBook experience and won't have to sell mine and search for upgrades.

    Thoughts ?

What’s the best way to reset/wipe my MacBook if I want to sell it second hand?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 08:18 PM PDT

I want to sell my MacBook because I just don't use it or have much of a need for it. I have an iPad Air and for everything at the moment that is all I really need. If it makes any difference it is an m1 MacBook Air.

BestBuy Sale: Should I (23F) get the 16GB RAM 512SSD 2020 MacBook Air that’s on sale from $1,500, OR get the more expensive ($1,649) 2020 MacBook Air with M1 Chip, 8GB RAM & 512SSD?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 09:21 AM PDT

I'm having trouble deciding because I don't know if the M1 chip is worth having less RAM. Does anyone have experience with either one of these models, or even the base ones with 256 SSD? Thank you!

    Internal dimension of Incase sleeves

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 03:17 AM PDT

I failed to find official data from either apple or amazon or Incase website for the Incase sleeves. For those of you who own one, would you share the measure of its internal dimensions? I think the price tag is quite high that I would only invest if it's a snug fit for the MacBook Air which has 12*8.36 inch

Buy M1 MacBook Air now or wait for M2

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 08:07 AM PDT

Hello guys, I am considering buying an M1 MacBook but I know that there are M2 Macbooks coming out soon. Would it be better to wait for M2 and pay extra £100 as I know the MacBook Air is discounted at the minute as they're trying to move stock. I have a Dell XPS 15 7590 but my dad bought a M1 Mac Mini today and omg it is incredible the performance and the how quiet it is so I am really considering selling my Dell XPS 15 7590 and buying a MacBook Air as I just like the OS better and it'll be dead silent as I know it has no fan. The only downgrades would be the screen, smaller keyboard, storage(I use nowhere near 1TB in XPS plus I have Windows Desktop) and RAM(My dad's 8GB Mac Mini runs brilliantly with 8 so no concern with Apple optimization). Let me know what you guys think I should do and yes I know there might be a bit of bias considering I am on an MacBook sub-reddit but I like and value other people's opinions. Also this would be used for Uni as I bought the Dell XPS 15 last year with the expectation of going into University with it and using it but that wasn't the case and so I mostly used my Desktop at home using the XPS from time to time. While the XPS is pretty light, I do not like how big it is, is the only thing. I can afford to keep both but problem is if you have 1 and use 1 more what is the point in keeping both.

Which is better? Shut down or put macbook to sleep daily?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 08:02 AM PDT

I saw someone post that they only put their Macbook to sleep instead of shutting it down so it can run maintainance duties in the background? Is this advisable?

Haptic touch on one finger tag on macbook air?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 08:02 AM PDT

i dont like the force touching on the touch pad to click, so i have change in the settings to have one tap to click instead. Is there a way to get the "vibrator" or haptic touch active when using the one tap to click option on macbook air (m1)?

I don’t know if this is the right place for this, but how do I remove this icon? I have tried everything recommended and it still will not let me get rid of it.

No promt to install rosetta 2 in Intel programs!

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 04:52 PM PDT

Just got my new Macbook Air M1 and I used a backup from a previous Macbook M1 where I have installed Rosetta 2. But when my new Macbook air had set itself up from backup I did not have to install Rosetta 2.

Is it possible that my Backup transfered Rosetta 2 to my New Macbook Air?

How likely is my new MacBook Air to survive a coffee spill?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 02:02 PM PDT

I started a job this spring and have been using/provided a brand new MacBook Air. Yesterday, I had about half of a cup of coffee spill onto the entire keyboard. Panicking, I immediately began wiping the keyboard and then turned it off after probably 1-2 minutes and tilted it to get excess liquid out. The coffee was black with nothing in it.

I told my IT team, and they said to leave it off and flipped in a tent shape for 48 hours. The anticipation is killing me, how likely is it to survive?

    Mistakenly Deleted Wi-Fi Interface

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 12:05 PM PDT

So my wifi was acting up and I looked for solutions on what to do. I mistakenly removed Wi-Fi from the available network options (at the recommendation of some bright internet stranger /s) and when I went back in to add it, it didn't show up as an option anymore—only Thunderbolt Bridge, Bluetooth PAN, VPN, PPPoE, and 6to4 are available.

I'm able to connect to Wi-Fi on other devices so I know the Wi-Fi itself is not a problem. The icon still shows up in the menu bar, but I'm unable to see any networks to connect to. Has anyone else experienced this and managed to figure it out?

Looking for help. H,J,K,L keys have stopped working.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 06:53 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I have a 2015 13" MBP. A few days ago I noticed my "H" key was becoming intermittent. I removed the keycap and cleaned everything as much as I could. No improvement. As of a few minutes ago the J,K, and L keys are now not working at all. The "H" key works if I press really really hard, but the J, K, and L keys don't work at all no matter what I do.

Any ideas? Is this something that can be fixed or am I pooched? For now I'm using a USB keyboard but it's not an ideal solution.

    Thanks!

    Which Macbook for me?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 08:00 PM PDT

I am trying to figure out what Macbook would be ideal for me. I live in India and this shit is super duper expensive, so I don't really want to end up buying something that might end up under utilized.

My requirement is photo and basic video editing.

    1. My Canon RAW files from my 5D Mark III would be the heavist file I would be working with either on Photoshop or Lightroom.
    2. Basic GoPro footage (maybe 4K) on either DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro. I don't shoot RAW video or anything at the moment. But would consider a situation in the near future where I upgrade my camera and end up shooting RAW video. Maybe I can use Proxy files for editing the videos in case I start shooting with heavier files?

I was initially thinking if it was worth buying the Macbook Pro with 16GB or RAM, then based on all the reviews I had wanted on YouTube, starting thinking if a Macbook Air would suffice considering it can manage these two requirements of mine.

The main reason for the confusion being the lack of being able to upgrade memory or storage later.

I need a little help from actual users with deciding which of the Macbooks to buy since I really am getting messed up in the head about whether I should keep the costs down and go with the MBA or if I should go for the MBP instead IF it can last me at least 5 years. I'm not able to decide based on YouTube videos :-(

    Thanks Reddit.

Is it time for an upgrade?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 07:42 PM PDT

I've had my 2015 macbook air 128GB for around 5 years now and will be starting college this fall. I love my laptop to death, but I'm starting to run out of storage despite cleaning out old files/applications/caches (15gb left). Everything still seems to be running smoothly (at 81% battery capacity), so is it worth it to spend $1000+ on a new macbook pro before starting college? Or should I get a new hard drive?

My MacBook pro mid 2015 is slow after upgrading the SSD

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 05:39 AM PDT

Hey, I know there are some experienced MacBook users here so I'd like to get some help.

I recently bought 1TB Adata SX8200 pro and an SSD adapter for my mid 2015 15" Macbook pro, the installation was smooth and everything worked as it was supposed to but now the whole system feels super slow and sluggish. Switching tabs on chrome/safari or even switching windows is slow.

I've tried reinstalling macOS Catalina twice and even Big Sur and still have this problem. I have also tried resetting smc and nvram but those didn't help either.

Maybe someone who has had the same issue can help me out?
