    Stolen Wallet: An Airtag Story

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:37 PM PDT

Hey folks, I don't post on Reddit much, but I figured I could A) sorta vent here about my day and B) give a real use case of how AirTags worked in a legitimately bleak scenario.

So I was at the gym today, and I foolishly brought my wallet in with me (I usually leave it in the car). Even remember thinking as I entered if I should go back and drop my wallet off in the car, but nope, I decided it'd be fine. Spoiler: it wasn't. My wallet was a Gucci branded wallet with about $100 in cash in it and a couple of credit cards, along with my license. I also had enough space in it to stick an Airtag in there (there's a compartment where it fit easily). I'd initially bought the Airtag as I always lose my things around the house, wallet included.

Anyway, I realized at the end of my workout, about an hour/hour and a half later, that I didn't have my wallet. I usually put things on the floor and not the locker since I don't really carry much to warrant it, but that negligence was on me. My assumption is that; at some point, someone swiped my wallet while I wasn't looking. And I didn't notice it because I and the person I was working out with were focused on our sets. Once our workouts were complete, I realized that I didn't have it on me at all. Out came my phone and the Find My app.

I'll say this much: the AirTag really works. I was able to see that the wallet had left the gym and was at the next subway station (NYC). So my friend and I went and hopped into my car and started driving towards the Airtag, in the hopes that I'd be able to intercept the person who had it. Admittedly, I figured the chances were super slim, but seeing as the Airtag was moving, I assumed that the thief hadn't noticed or knew what the Airtag was. The culprit eventually switched trains and then the Airtags stopped at a station. Me being the hopeful fool I was, went into the train station, and used the "Find" feature and eventually, I did indeed find the Airtag; just not the wallet. I guess the thief figured out what it was and tossed it into the subway tracks, where it still remains right now.

What's the point of this story? Mainly to vent, but also to vocalize how impressed I was at Airtag's ability to stay updated on where it was located, and the relative ease of finding it about 5 miles or so away from where it was initially stolen. In a big ass city like NYC, I def find that impressive. No wallet, sadly. Sucks, because aside from my license and my credit cards, I also had two sentimental notes in there that I'll never be able to get back. But hey, AirTags are legit. Not THAT great for theft protection. But I figured my story would give some input as to what the device is capable of.

Make sure y'all guard your stuff. Don't end up like me.

WWDC Theory: Here comes the Blue Bubble Social Network

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 08:43 PM PDT

The latest WWDC email invite spells it out pretty clearly, showing lots of Memoji all sitting around iMessage. Apple have kept iMessage off android, and the Epic V Apple we have heard about why it's in Apples interest to lock users in and bot open to Android. Further , the recent do not track privacy setting are the first shot across the bow at FB. Imagine , a free social network that respects your privacy, and has a massive install base. Messaging apps in China are already huge and encompass more usage than just texting , and much of what is done every day is done via the chat app ie transactions. Guess we'll find out how wrong I am in a week.

iPhone XS: Reception and Wireless Performance Continue to Disappoint

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:00 AM PDT

I'm trying extremely hard to hold out for the next iPhone, but my current XS is absolutely horrible for reception, call quality and wireless performance on both WiFi and LTE. I know the issues are well documented on various other forums, so consider this sort of a mini rant.

I've been tempted to either purchase a "cheap" 11 Pro or score a 12 Pro and use either one until the next device is launched and readily available, but I just can't bring myself to buy a device without a 120Hz screen for $1000+.

Anyone else in a similar boat with their X/XS?
