Fixed my macbook's charger by bringing back the classic cable hooks.

Avoid Baseus products (docks / chargers) for your MacBook, they do not honor warranty on when the products break.

Planning on getting an M1 machine. Is the SSD longevity still an issue?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 08:33 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I have been using the first version of MacBook Pro with touch bar provided by my org for 2 years now but I never had a personal MacBook. The reviews about the M1 MacBooks and my experience with my company MacBook Pro have got me excited about these machines so I'm planning to buy an M1 MacBook and have the following questions:

    - Is the SSD wear still an issue? Or has Apple addressed it via an extended warranty or software update? I couldn't find any resolution on this issue online. Most of the threads I see online are 2 months old and they are talking about the issue and a possible solution being opting for the 16G and maybe higher SSD capacity like 512GB to increase the longevity of the SSD.

    - I will be using this primarily for web browsing, movies, music and coding via IntelliJ/VS Code/Sublime so I'm wondering if I even need to go for the Pro model or does the Air model suffice for me? As far as I read, the Air model performs comparable to the Pro with the extra perks on the Pro model being active cooling, high dynamic range for sound and one additional core for the GPU.

Considering the only "professional" part I will be doing is coding, I think the one less GPU core is not an issue for me but maybe the cooling part might pose a problem under heavy build/compile process? Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers!

    Buy now or wait?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 06:52 PM PDT

    When is the next-gen coming?

So I am going to college this fall and I am going to get a MacBook air. I need to have it by early August. Should I just pull the trigger and buy the current M1 MacBook Air? Or should I wait to see if the next generation air comes out?

    Macbook Air Order still “processing”

    Posted: 19 May 2021 05:13 PM PDT

Hey everyone! On Sunday I bought a MacbookAir 2020 (the standard one) and since then, my order still says "processing" The ETA is from May 21 - May 25. Does Apple usually does this with the MacBooks orders? Can I still receive my order on time?

Bought a 2020 intel core i7 16GB RAM MacBook Air. I want to connect it to either 2 1080p monitors or 2 4K monitors, not sure which set yet....

    Posted: 19 May 2021 04:42 PM PDT

Would I need a dongle/dock to connect to the first monitor, and then a USB-C to HDMI cable for the other monitor (this would be directly connected from the thunderbolt 3 port to the monitor)? Thanks in advance.

    Which MacBook should I get

    Posted: 19 May 2021 02:42 PM PDT

So I have the opportunity of choice here, on one hand I could get a 13" 2020 MacBook Pro 1.7Ghz Quad-Core i7 with 8gb ram and 512ssd for $1100 and on the other hand I can get a 15" 2017 MacBook Pro Quad core i7 2.8ghz 16gb and 512ssd for $1350, please I need help as to which is a better buy, for my workload purposes I'm a web developer so nothing overly intense that both can't handle. I appreciate all your responses

    M1 Air Keyboard

    Posted: 19 May 2021 01:25 PM PDT

Does anyone else feel that the new keyboard is funky? I purchased the M1A last month to use as my personal/work computer and I find myself hating the keyboard. I just do not feel like I get the same amount of words per minute or travel on the keys as I did on my 2019 MBP.

2018 Macbook Pro running hot, fans on full speed

    Posted: 19 May 2021 01:21 PM PDT

I've noticed my 2018 Macbook Pro running very hot for the past month or so.

I'm not doing anything that should be considered strenuous, just general office work. I make sure not to keep the laptop on my lap or any surface that would cause excess heat. I use Brave Browser, which uses much less RAM than Chrome. I usually don't have more than 4 or 5 tabs open at once.

My activity monitor usually lists "Window Server" and "kernel_task" as the highest CPU usages, but nothing seems to be over the top.

The Macbook is also occasionally hot when closed and charging (it was hot when I picked it up this morning). Charging usually makes all of these symptoms worse.

Computer is up to date, I've tried resetting the SMC, that doesn't seem to have done anything.

Found a fix for PWM flicker & other headaches-eye strain on MacBook Air M1

    Posted: 19 May 2021 12:01 PM PDT

Hi, If you are so eager for the solution start reading from 2nd paragragh.

I generally cannot use PWM flickering phones. As it is mostly in the LED phones, I have avoided using LED phones and I can only buy non LED phones like LCD IPS. I came to know about PWM when I bought google pixel 3xl. It gave me daily(yes each and everyday) headaches. The headaches used to gradually increase to certain state where I am forced to leave the office work and goto home and sleep or take 2 pain killers at once and apply some balm on forehead. Saying all this to let you know my headaches and PWM relation. After learning PWM, I sold my pixel 3xl and buying only lcd phones since then.

So coming to MBA M1, I bought it last week, and for the first time usage, it gave me headaches. Generally I do not feel eye strain. I only get headaches. But that alone is nightmare in my life. I have very bad history with headaches. So, I tried to return the laptop but the Indian seller on Flipkart only gave me replacement option. I even tried to use the replaced laptop. This time I put the brightness to 100 and tried to use laptop using my sun glasses. But still I got headaches.

But, on the next day morning, I opened the laptop and disabled auto brightness and set the brightness slightly above 50%(generally you can't see percentage but I went by the placement of brightness cursor in control center). Means it should be somewhere at 60-65%. And also enabled night shift all the time. After more than 4+ hours also, I did not get headaches. Then next day I used completely with those same settings without headaches issue.

I read a review of M1 which also included M1 PWM information. Review link is provided below. In short the article is saying that, M1 has PWM at very high frequency(the higher the frequency is the lesser the issues to us generally but again for very sensitive people they get issues even at higher frequency like me) at upto 49% brightness. And also there is PWM with the same high frequency at very high brightness levels. So is why, I experimented with the above said brightness range(i.e at 60 to 65%).

But even at 60-65% brightness, the screen will be very bright to look at, so for this I am using an app called Spf - Screen Polarizer. This basically provides a layer on the screen. This way the screen brightness will be shaded without actually decreasing the Mac brightness. Link is shared below.

I am not sure if this is just temporary fix or something happening in my favour because of some other unknown reasons. But just want to share my experience to fellow sensitive gadget lovers. I know how happy it feels to find a fix after suffering from long time :).

Also, there is another kind of solution according to one of the ledstrain forum member. He shared his experience - that after increasing the work hours gradually even he is facing headaches, one fine day the headaches are gone. He is saying that may be his brain has started adjusted the Pwm after repeated forcely using the laptop.

Lemme know if this worked to any of you or not. Would be happy if at least one person find it helpful.

Also I think, this brightness range fix only works on M1 Mac. If you check your device review on notebook check.net and see if the reviewer has mentioned the PWM absent range and try to experiment your device at that brightness range.

    M1 MBA: USB-C to Mini-USB issue

    Posted: 19 May 2021 10:36 AM PDT

    *Micro

    Hey,

Whenever I plug my Fuji XT20 camera into my M1 MBA using the supplied USB-Micro USB cable and a USB-USB C adapter, the camera charges but the memory card is not mounted.

It worked on my old iMac but not on the MBA. I currently have to take the card out and use a reader+adapter to transfer images.

I have tried a Micro USB-USB C cable as well and I still get no mounting.

    Any ideas?

    Edit: Micro-C Adapters

Is a 2010 MacBook Air still worth it in 2021?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 05:55 AM PDT

I've been offered one by a friend of mine, it's in great shape and has the highest specs possible (1.8Ghz Dual core, 8GB RAM, 256 SSD iirc) for 250€, battery at 99% health with 57 cycles

I'm kind of turned off because it doesn't support Big Sur, but I'm not sure about the impact of that, that would be my main question. I plan on using it for multimedia purposes, some light photo editing and the usual office related tasks

What to look for when buying used Macbook Air M1?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 08:30 AM PDT

What things should I pay attention to when buying slightly used air m1? What do I need to check? Selling process is face-to-face so no postal service.

Bought by seller 25.02 this year. Battery has 23 cycles. I never had a macbook before but now I have to make a switch to mac os for music production.

And overall is this a good choice buying it used at all, price is lower at around 220$ comparing to the new one from the shop rn.

    How wet is too wet?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 07:19 AM PDT

My hand were kinda wet (like after you dry them with a towel but not fully so you still have them a bit wet) and I held the MacBook in a way that I touched the charging ports .. there's no visible water , but should I be concerned about anything?

    True Tone and Brown Skin

    Posted: 19 May 2021 06:15 AM PDT

Here I sit with my MacBook Air with M1 processor, truly enjoying every aspect of the hardware. However, somethings been concerning me.

Imagine me with the MacBook in front of me on a desk. Behind the MacBook, facing me, is a large window with great natural light. When I turn on the True Tone feature, the screen gets a little browner. When I put a white envelope in between my face and the screen, the screen loses the soft brown hue and returns to something closer to True Tone being turned off.

Is True Tone worthwhile if the screen changes to a tone to match my skin color? Am I imagining this? Has anyone else noticed this "feature"?

    MacBook Pro 14” Battery Speculation

    Posted: 19 May 2021 04:23 AM PDT

    Hey Guys,

With all the news regarding the new core count for the MBP14, I was wondering what the battery life would be like; especially as it seems the new 14" would be the same dimensions as the current 13" and the increased screen size would be through decreased bezels.

Using the power usage from the current M1 chip I calculated that the new 14" would have a battery life of about 11hrs for web and 13hrs of video playback, which would be the same as the current MBP16.

Does anyone know if there are any leaks regarding expected battery life?

At this point, if my assumptions are correct, it seems that the MBP13 would be the one with amazing battery life, the MBP14 amazing power and the MBP16 both power and battery life at the cost of portability.

Which at this point has me wondering if the MBA will be replacing the current MBP13 as they have nearly the same amount of power and the MacBook line up changing to:

MacBook Air - Portability and Battery life

MacBook Pro 14" - Portability and Power

MacBook Pro 16" - Power and Battery life

Sorry for the rambling and tangent there. I'm just really excited for the release of the MBP14.

Macbook pro 13" mid 2017 and endless issue. Costed €3000 as new. Sent it to fix in a third party repair centre. Its not ram issue, neither flexgate. Gave the repair man static shock. Battery don't hold much charge. Could spend this €3000 in much better things than buying a useless brick.
