Is now a bad time to upgrade to a M1 Macbook Pro

    Posted: 10 May 2021 03:24 PM PDT

I have an early 2015 13" Macbook Pro. I've been thinking about replacing it and leaning towards another macbook since i can't find a windows laptop I want. But supposedly there will be a new 14" macbook come out this year. Would I be better off waiting on it?

My current one works fine, just a little slow sometimes.

How to remove user account and used storage of previous user?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 06:18 PM PDT

Hi. I recently got my hands on a secondhand Macbook Air from a friend. I created my own account, but I realized there are still a lot of "traces" of my friend on the Macbook. For example, her account's still there, the internal hard drive still has her name on it so I don't have a lot of free space because that account is using up the storage. Also, there are a few apps that I can't update because they were "purchased with another Apple ID" or something.

Is there any way that I can do something like a factory reset without having to get my friend's password and stuff?

When trading in, does upgraded RAM increase your trade in value?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 03:16 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm a college student buying a new MacBook since mine died successfully with no repairs possible. I am wanting the M1 MacBook Pro because of my video editing needs. I am wanting to upgrade to 16GB RAM because of this but honestly want to trade in this new MacBook as soon as a new one comes out (since rumors are there will be no touchbar) and I'm wondering if it makes sense to pay $200 extra for this RAM upgrade now if I'm going to trade it in ASAP? If it increases my trade in value a little bit then cool but if not, I don't plan to have it long enough to need this extra RAM. $200 is significantish to me right now. I would appreciate any advice from others with previous trade in experience.

    MacBook Air Battery Life/Replacement

    Posted: 10 May 2021 06:24 PM PDT

In March 2020 I purchased the retina MacBook Air that first came out. Ever since, I have been working from home full time. I am mostly running Citrix to connect to my office desktop. When not plugged in, I get about 5 hours on the battery as a result. I have spoken to Apple and I tried the recommended steps that they had, which is now leading me to mail it back to them or take it to an authorized service provider for inspection. Does Apple actually replace the batteries, or find fault in the user and just leave it as is? I have purchased an iMac now as I will be working from home for the foreseeable future now. Will the battery regulate a bit if it will be used less going forward? I will have to mail out the device for inspection, so I am not too keen on the idea to do so.

Anyone having issues with HDCP compliance?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 06:20 PM PDT

I use my 2020 MacBook Pro with a MSI 341CQ connected by a WARRKY USB C to DisplayPort cable. I have been using this set up successfully since October. Now I am running into HDCP compliance issues and I can't figure out what changed. Does anyone know about HDCP? Should I get a splitter or something?

    Storage regrets?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 10:25 AM PDT

Has anyone got the new MacBook Pro or Air M1 with 256 GB storage and wished they had gone for the 512 GB instead? That's my situation, and I'm thinking of exchanging it for one with more space. I'm only a week into owning my new MBA and worry about not having enough storage for the future. I do have 200 GB iCloud storage for all my photos, so I'm not sure if I need to be worrying.

I'd love to hear about your experiences.

Login no longer connected to right account (home folder)? - So lost I don't even know if title is correct.

    Posted: 10 May 2021 03:58 PM PDT

SHORT VERSION: I tried to rename what I think is called my home folder from my company name to my name, and now I have two logins and three home folders and can't get my login connected to either home folder - the original or the new one that was automatically created when I tried to just rename the original.

    LONG VERSION:

My MacBook Air has/had two users, Bert and Ernie.

When Bert first configured the computer and his admin account, he didn't understand how MacOS worked and even though he set up the login ID to be "Bert" somehow the home drive containing all of his files, settings, etc., was erroneously named "BertsCompany".

When he set up Ernie's admin account later, the home drive containing all of his files, settings, etc., was automatically named Ernie.

Bert is OCD, and even thought he knows better than to mess with things that aren't truly broken, he Googled how to make his login and home drive names match. The site said to log in as Ernie, and while in Ernie's account, change the folder name "BertsCompany" to "Bert", so that's what he did. However, when Bert restarted and logged in, he was obviously setting up a brand new account. Sure enough, when he switched back over to Ernie's account, he saw three home drive folders, Bert, Ernie, and BertsCompany.

First Bert tried to complete the fix by deleting the newly created "Bert" folder and renaming "BertsCompany" to "Bert" again. The same thing as above happened. Then he tried to just delete the new "Bert" folder, leave "BertsCompany" alone, and hope that reverted things to original. It didn't.

So right now, we're back to Ernie connected to "Ernie", Bert connected to "Bert" (empty/new account) and "BertsCompany" inaccessible.

How does Bert either 1. properly rename "BertsCompany" to "Bert" and connect that to his login, or 2. Get rid of "Bert" and just reconnect to "BertsCompany" and never, ever try to mess with this again?

Thank you so much for any help. Of course Bert did this in the middle of finishing taxes, and can't finish taxes until he sorts this out.

UPDATE: Now it seems that Bert is connected to "BertsCompany", but the dock is still "factory" and there are no Documents or Downloads folders at all. Only the other five - Photos, Videos, etc. Chrome is missing all of its profiles. All kinds of stuff is missing.

Clean start vs Restore from backup pros and cons?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 03:00 PM PDT

Anyone switching from Windows 10, struggling with saving photos to a particular folder in MacOS?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 05:33 PM PDT

How to save a photo in a particular folder:

    Using Windows 10:

    1) right click on photo

    2) select save as...

    3) select the location from the file array and save.

Just found out the way to save a photo in a particular folder in MacOS:

    1) click on the photo.

    2) move the mouse to the top left corner of the screen, fiddle your mouse until the menu appears.

    3) click File

    4) click Export

    5) click Export 1 photo

    6) The menu that opens has only one function, to get you to select file type for the photo

    7) click Export a second time. This opens Finder and you can select the location.

    8) click Export a third time, and Viola! as if by magic, your file is saved where you wanted it saved.

If you haven't switched from Windows to Mac yet, DON'T. The OS may have been cutting edge in 1990s but nothing much has happened since then, other than some colour and icon changes. I can't wait for this machine to die so that I can go back to Windows 10 again.

    Underwater Audio in Background

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:43 PM PDT

Whenever I'm on my MacBook, and I use Spotify or some other sound source behind something else for music, (usually a Zoom meeting), it sounds super muffled, and is pretty distorted.

From what I've heard, this is something that happens for everyone when they play music in the background of something else, but I'd really like to know if there's a way to keep my computer from doing this at all.

Questions on Using Different Adaptor Wattages for Macbook Air and Macbook Pro

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:14 PM PDT

I have a 96w charger for my 2019 16" Macbook Pro. I now have a 30w charger for the new M1 2020 Macbook Air. From what I understand, I won't be able to use the 30w charger on the Macbook Pro because it won't provide enough power. But can I use the 96w charger to charge the M1 Macbook Air?

I called Apple Tech Support and have been getting conflicting answers saying It's safe to use and not safe to use. My fear is ruining the Macbook Air's battery, it's longevity, performance, sending too much power, etc.

I'm not looking to use the 96w charger to "charge it faster", but simply to just use one plug out of convenience. Can anyone help explain why it is or isn't safe to use the 96w charger on the Air?

    Thanks in advance!

Is Applecare+ worth it for a base macbook air?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 12:27 PM PDT

Hi guys, I just wanted some help deciding on something. I recently got my wife a M1 macbook air, since she hated my gaming laptop, and she loves it!

I'm just now hesitant about purchasing applecare+. She's not very careful with a lot of electronics but at least I can get a sturdy case for them; except for her macbook.

I really wanna get this insuranc ebut it doesn't protect against loss or theft and it seems quite expensive ($229 plus $99-$299 deductible) for a $899 laptop.

    What would you guys recommend?

A1706 820-00923-A Touch Bar connector and flex burnt

    Posted: 10 May 2021 10:42 AM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro that came in with a screen issue. We determined that it was a problem with the T-CON board and ordered a new screen. The new screen seems to be working fine but when I turned the computer on I noticed an issue with charging and that the touchbar wasn't responding (but was displaying an image) and then the machine restarted with a message that something had gone wrong.

It was around this point that I noticed a burn smell and immediately shut it down and got everything disconnected. That's when I noticed that the connector on the logic board as well as the flex cable itself are burnt. It also smells like the other flex that connects everything to the logic board (AMS983 JC01-0) is also burnt.

I'm not sure if the touchbar problem preceded and caused the T-CON issue and I don't want to kill this new screen. I'm hoping somebody has an idea of what went wrong here and what I need to look at and check for shorts. Unfortunately I don't have the board schematics for this thing so that makes it tough.

Thanks for any and all help.

MBP 13" 2/ TouchBar charging SUPER fast, and draining in like 4-5 hours, what's going on?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:48 AM PDT

I have this MBP^, and it is basically mint condition, and have used it for about a year, have a Apple charging block, and a 3rd party usb-c cable. I don't think a third part USB-C cable should really be big deal, as long as the power supply is from Apple and isn't faulty.

But my battery charges from like 30% to 92% in 50 minutes or so, not even a full hour, WHILE IN USE. My battery health says normal, and I take good care of my laptop.

Is there an issue at hand here?

Wich Macbook it's sutable for me?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:34 AM PDT

Hi there, I will like to read your recommendations.

Im tired of my Lenovo T440 it has been a great computer but I want to change it. I like to switch back to MacOs. So I was wondering wich Macbook is sutable for me.

I use the computer for Zoom Meetings, Word and, lot of Excel Spreadsheets and Internet navigation with multiple tabs open Youtube, and also music stream on iTunes, all at the same time. I always connect my computer to a second monitor screen it's 1080P so I work with both screens.

One pal told me that 8Gb of RAM will be enough for me because MacOs it's different from Windows. It's that true or should I get a 16Gb? Also it said that a Macbook Air Core i7 it's my best budget option, or should I get the Pro? I want flawless video experience because I share my screen via Zoom, and some times videos on Youtube (it's riddiculus I know but some times I need to because I'm tutoring children).

My budget it's $600 obviusly I'm searching a used one on eBay.

[Help] Note on iPhone 11 disappeared after pulling it up on MacBook Air

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:01 AM PDT

    Hello,

So I was working on a note (notes app on my iPhone 11) and while I was working on it I had my MacBook (MacBook Air 2020) open next to me. So on the toolbar at the bottom of my MacBook screen a notes app appeared with a little phone over the top of it, suggesting that I could pull up the note that I was working with on my iPhone, on my MacBook. I decided to do so, since I can type way better on a keyboard. When I pulled it up on my MacBook, it did not appear at all, it just showed me the next note that was saved (and I guess synced with my MacBook). Now, at this point, the note in question was nowhere to be found on my MacBook, AND it disappeared completely from my iPhone. It is nowhere to be found on my iPhone, even though I have been working on it and adding to it over the past couple of months. There is no "recently deleted" section, either. So, the note in question is neither on my phone, nor on my MacBook -- its completely vanished.

Has anyone had this issue happen to them? How can I recover my lost note?

Some info that may be helpful, apparently my iCloud storage is full, so perhaps that's an issue? But where would that send my note?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this note had a lot of important work done on it.

For a new MacBook, is the option to ‘restore from a previous backup’ available only during the first setup or can it be done later on?
