The Best Games I've Played in a Decade of iOS Gaming

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 02:55 PM PDT

Hey y'all, I posted this in an earlier comment thread and people seemed to like it, so I decided to turn it into a post.

Here's my list. These are all premium games, no freemium bullshit.

Okay, if you're into strategy games at all (my favorite genre) I recommend these premium experiences:

Northgard - Viking RTS, perfect balance between simple mechanics and deep strategy. Lead a colony of Vikings through colonizing a new island while staving off the hostile native monsters and the other competing Vikings

Starbase Orion - A remake of the classic Masters of Orion game. Fantastic, deep old-school space empire 4X. Highly recommended but be warned this game has a learning curve, but also a small yet dedicated online player base of veterans who are more than willing to help you learn.

Door Kickers - Awesome tactical top-down strategy game, lead a team of SWAT officers through mission after mission of crime-fighting. You equip, train, and order your squad through intense gunfights. You pause the combat, issue orders, then hit play and watch them go.

FTL - less of a strategy game, more of a space roguelike. Take a ship and crew across the Galaxy as you attempt to escape the rebel fleet. Upgrade your ship, unlock interesting new weapons, and find bizarre encounters. Each run is randomly generated so there's plenty of content

Kingdom Rush - If you like tower defense games, then there's nothing better than the kingdom rush series. Really engaging gameplay and lots of experimentation needed to win. Has some pay-to-win elements but I've never bought any of them and still done fine.

If you're more into story-based games, then I recommend:

Kings of Dragon Pass & Six Ages - these are no doubt two of the best games I've ever played. You take the role of a tribal elder in the mythical, early Bronze Age land of Glorantha. Lead your tribe through hundreds of years of history as you make tribal decisions, deal with the gods, war with other clans, and become the first King Of Dragon Pass. Each time you play a new game, you get a randomly generated new story and with thousands of interlocking events, you'll never feel like you're leading the same tribe twice.

Bastion & Transistor - Beautiful Story-driven games made by the creators of Hades. I won't lie, each game was such an artistic and musical masterpiece I found myself crying at the end of both. Amazing games, can't go wrong.

Technobabylon, or any other Wadjet Eye Studios game - These are the classic point and click adventures games of the old days. Deep stories, fully voiced characters, and lots of point-and-click puzzle-solving goodness. Great games.

Device 6 - one of the most creative games I've ever played, a mash between a puzzle game and an interactive book. Words, images, and sound come to life on the pages as you try to solve the mystery of a young woman trapped on an eccentric island. I replay this game every few years and I'm blown away by it every time.

This War of Mine - Really dark subject matter, so fair warning. In this game you lead a group of refugees living in a war zone. You must protect them, feed them, and shelter them as the city falls into chaos and things get worse and worse.

    Action Games:

Dead Cells - Critically acclaimed roguelike, fast-paced hack and slash combat, gorgeous 2D pixel art, and a constant feeling of "FUCK! SHOULDVE HAD THAT". Lots of permanent upgrades to unlock so you always feel like you're progressing

Dungeon of the Endless - roguelike dungeon crawler where you fight through alien-infested corridors and upgraded your gear. Amazing pixel art

    RPGs:

Sorcery Series 1-4 - These games are a series of choose your own adventure books come to life. Lead your character through a magical fantasy land, from the dangers of the Shamutanti Hills to the grimy underbelly of Khare, the city of thieves. You can take the same character from Sorcery 1 all the way to Sorcery 4, so you really feel like you created your own tale here.

Slay the Spire - Delightfully simple but deceptively deep rogue-like card game. You run through several levels while building a deck of cards to use in fights. Each run unlocks new cards and strategies so you always feel like you're progressing

Darkest Dungeon - This game has really gorgeous and dark gothic art and an amazing atmosphere. You lead a team of wretched adventurers through dark and grimy dungeons, fighting off monsters and your own insanity as the darkness creeps in. Return to the town after a run to drink away your sorrows and buy new gear, then back into the horror. Really fun tho lol.

Icewind Dale or Avernum: both of these are wonderful isometric CRPG, a classic remake of the old dungeons and dragons style games.

    Honorable Mentions:

Card Crawl - light solitaire style game with a dungeon crawling theme. Easy to play and always fun

Out There - light exploration game where you try to survive as long as you can as a spaceship lost in an alien galaxy

Monument Valley - optical illusion based puzzle game with amazing art

The Room series - hidden object style puzzle games where you take apart and solve intricate puzzle boxes to solve the mystery of your eccentric uncle's disappearance

There's others I'm forgetting at the moment, so I might update this list.

    Anyway, have fun!

Trying to Find an Old Favorite!

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 09:38 AM PDT

This is a repost technically because I never found it :'( Its not N.O.V.A. or Waking Mars

Hey everyone, I'm trying to remember the name of a weird old space/SciFi ios game that I had on my ipod touch probably around the 2010's.

It was set on some planet (Mars, Venus, or Saturn maybe?) or an asteroid. First person, open world (kinda), cool/eerie techno/electric guitar music I think.

You fought through areas shooting weird, cheap looking aliens or robots looking for something... maybe parts to power up your ship? Or your shelter?

I also remember a special area where you fought this little boss that looked like a bloody torso that spun around attacking you, and once you beat it you could summon it to fight with you, like literally from hell lol.

I feel like the name of the game had like "mars" or "expedition" or something in it but I have no idea 😩. I also distinctly remember there being a "lite" version of the app and a paid version for like $5. The app icon was greenish I think with maybe a silver border?

I know this was a horrible description, but apparently 10+ years later this is all I can remember lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!!

Labryrinth Legend is a perfect dungeon crawler

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 11:51 PM PDT

Through the great rpg-site.com I stumbled across Labyrinth Legend, an older free-to-play dungeon crawler. And after playing for a whole day, I have to say that to me this is the best game of its kind I have ever played.

It feels like the dev could read my mind, and with every single decision he chose the best option. I seriously love every detail of this game: The pixel presentation is charming and timeless, the controls are flawless and fully adjustable, dungeon layouts are randomly generated, there's tons of loot to collect, sell and upgrade, the boss fights are fantastic, there is an arena mode, you adopt, name and level up a monster companion, there's even a tiny idle section where you collect ore (to upgrade your items) even when not playing, the combats are not about button smashing but rather strategic, and the weapons' impact feels great, the village that serves as your hub is super well designed, with changing NPC dialogs that push the game's tiny story forward, the inclusion of ads is the least annoying I've seen in a free-to-play game, and you can opt out with a tiny purchase that I made pretty quickly. Seriously, I cannot find a single flaw with this game and what it wants to be. A true labor of love down to the tiniest details. If you like dungeon crawlers, you HAVE to try it!

    Dawncaster: Deckbuilding RPG Review

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 11:06 AM PDT

I'm a huge fan of the deck-building games and I'm always on the lookout for new releases in the genre. Dawncaster definitely caught my eye when it released this month and decided to pick it up. Now that I've spent quite a bit of time with the game, I decided to make a review for the game to share my thoughts about it. It's only 5 minutes long and covers these key points (in this exact order):

    1. Art Style & Sound Design
    2. Gameplay
    3. Controls
    4. Monetization
    5. Verdict

Hopefully this helps others decide on whether or not they want to take the plunge on Dawncaster. Feel free to leave your mini reviews in the comments (the more, the merrier) and let me know what your favorite deck-building games are. I'm always on the lookout for more! Thanks!

Premium game like Shin Megami Tensei

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 12:07 AM PDT

Hello, I was wondering if there were any games like SMT on iOS. I am aware of the F2P game but it appears to be on life support. More interested in recruiting and the flow of combat in SMT games (turn based and potentially with press turns for weakness)

Can i game on an ipad pro while it's still in charge?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 05:06 AM PDT

Hi , with new gaming smartphone appearing , new technologies emerge for mobile gaming . The one that come in mind is the capacity of powering directly the display without charging the battery so even if the battery is fully charge it will not discharge the device.

So is it safe to play on an ipad pro for long period of time?

    Good farming games?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 01:04 PM PDT

Hi all. I'm searching for a farming game, I've tried a couple but was not satisfied. I don't like:

    • Too much/any RPG elements (Stardew Valley)
    • Magic crap (Stardew Valley)
    • Puzzle elements (Pocket Harvest)
    • 3D setting (Farming Simulator)
    • Time management crap
    • Pay to win
    • MMO

Any ideas? Thank you in advance!
