Apple TV 4K colour balance errors

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 03:01 AM PDT

Mine fails part-way through each time. Initially it was getting about a 3rd of the way through and then failing. I then blocked out light from the windows etc and it then gets to about halfway (first white colour). Putting the phone right up against the screen gets it to just over halfway (on the white colours), then it just fails again.

Anyone else had this issue and resolved it somehow?

All devices are on the release candidate software, Apple TV 4K, iPhone 12 Pro, Samsung 4k (ue65ku6175) tv.

    Dialogue Enhancer

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 08:54 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm currently using a FireTV and there's an audio setting called Dialogue Enhancer that EQ's the audio to make voices clearer. Does AppleTV have a similar feature? Thanks!

Will Color Balance be available on the current ATV4K?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 11:08 AM PDT

Honestly I don't really ever game on my ATV4K so I'm not sure how useful the A12 chip will be for me.

That said, the color balance/calibration tool looks AMAZING. Is there any word on whether it'll be available for current ATV4K models or is this new model only due to needing the A12 chip?

Apple TV 4k(2017) vs Apple TV 4k(2021)

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 12:03 PM PDT

TL;DR- Upgraded Wi-Fi & HDMI, High frame rate HDR and a newish 'old' processor. That's all folks.

You can still buy the remote separately. Such a blah update, IMO. A price drop would have been great.

    Only the key differences:

    Remote Dimensions Height - 4.88in vs 5.4in Width - 1.5in vs 1.4in Depth - 0.25in vs 0.36in Weight - 1.59oz vs 2.2oz

    Processor - A10X(2017) vs A12(2018)

    HDMI - 2.0 vs 2.1

    Wifi - 802.11ac(Wifi5) vs 802.11ax(Wifi6)

New stuff - High Frame Rate HDR

Are you guys happy with the upgrade?

Personally, I feel I should have bought the previous version when I needed it last year.

Edit - Removed Color Balance, Dolby Vision & Atmos

Is the colour calibration the same as tone mapping?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 02:52 AM PDT

My Panasonic player is fantastic at tone mapping. My tv is about 500 nits for hdr when it's tone mapped the detail is amazing. Will this new colour technique work the same?

    Potential new user a question

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 01:23 AM PDT

Thinking of stepping into the Apple TV world from my nuc plex client. As of now this nuc runs 24X7 with plex running. Turn the tv on and bam plex is waiting.

If I were to run the plex Apple TV app can the Apple TV do the same ? Or will the app time out

Opening the plex app each time isn't that big of a hassle but right now everything is automated with my Harmony remote and not looking to give the user aka me extra start up steps.

    Thanks

No native AirTag support with the new Apple TV Siri Remote?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 11:07 AM PDT

Is it just me, or does the omittance of AirTag support in the brand new, redesigned Apple TV Siri Remote seem like a huge missed opportunity?

I own four Apple TV 4Ks, and I couldn't tell you where any of the remotes are. Between my four kids and wife, the remotes are always missing. The iPhone app is nice, but lack of volume control and minor bugs drive me insane. I would buy four brand new Apple TVs just to fix this issue, but it appears that Apple did not address it. Very strange not to address this, in my opinion.

The color balance feature ALONE is why I'll finally buy an Apple TV.

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 01:32 PM PDT

I've never purchased an Apple TV but I have two Apple TVs (3rd and 4th gen.), both of which were gifted to me. Because my 4K Samsung has most of the native streaming apps that I use, I hardly bother with Apple TV.

But I'm obsessed with color accuracy and TV calibration, though I don't have any calibration tools or software. With the new color balance feature, buying an Apple TV 4K is a no-brainer for me and it will be my primary device for streaming movies and shows.

    Well played, Apple.

The only other feature that would make Apple TV even better is if they also allowed input for video passthrough from other devices while still applying the color balance.
