PSA: How submissions will work tomorrow during the "Spring Loaded" Apple event

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 09:00 PM PDT

    Hey r/Apple

We are 1 day away from Apple's "Spring Loaded" event and as always, this subreddit's rule/operation will change to accommodate the influx of new users and to ensure that everything goes smooth.

One of these changes is restricting the ability to submit posts to moderators only. This helps us control spam to a minimum, as well as control rule breaking posts (i.e. reposts).

Some users thought that it would best to shift discussions from the main event thread to a separate thread as announcements are made, and we agreed. Starting a few events ago (including all the events from 2020), we (mods) started to submit articles with breaking news from the event so that those threads can become the centralized discussion for say, the new iPad or the new MacBook Pro.

During WWDC 2020, a few Redditors thought that we were getting paid by MacRumors and/or 9to5Mac because we submitted posts coming from those sources during the event. I want to take this space to clarify that no one in the mod team is being paid by any blog/press so that they can get their articles submitted by us. We will submit whichever article we find first. If 9to5Mac posted the article first, they will go on the board. Same thing with The Verge, MacRumors, you name it.

We're essentially copying the same actions other subreddit takes before huge events to minimize spam, rule-breaking content.

As always, there will be a pre-event a few hours before the event, a live-event thread, and post-event thread besides the individual topic threads. Additionally, there will likely be a ordering/shipping thread for new products announced and a megathread for product reviews/unboxings once the embargo lifts. Maybe we should have a meathread for all the megathreads 👀.

If you want to know when the event will be in your timezone, visit http://wheniskeynote.com/.

I hope this post clarifies where we come from, and see you tomorrow!

Opinion: screen time app limits would be way more useful if you could limit usage by hour.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 04:23 PM PDT

I think Apple's screen time and app limits are super cool, I'm glad they added them. But I have to admit, I ignore my app limits all the time. Which is obviously my fault, but I can't help but think that app limits by the hour would be much more useful than app limits by the day.

With app limits by the day, I think it's easy to use your phone like you normally would, run into your limit (sometimes in the morning 😬) and then just ignore the limit because you know you're not going to put your phone down for the rest of the day.

App limits by the hour seem like a better way to modulate screen time, and help coach the user to spend less time on their phones throughout the day instead of telling them their screen time for the day is over at a certain time. What do we think?

Rep Reserve: One-Rep Max and RPE Calculator written with SwiftUI

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 08:10 AM PDT

A growing trend in weight training is to use RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) to help regulate your training intensities.

I was a little frustrated at the lack of one-rep max calculators on the app store that take RPE into account. There's a few, but I didn't like any of their designs or user-interfaces and I thought I could do much better with my recent knowledge of SwiftUI.

In short - Rep Reserve allows you to calculate your one-rep max, then plan your next lift by converting between different values for reps / RPE.

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/rep-reserve/id1548112713

I still have lots of features to implement and it's still early but I'm really keen to get some feedback and I'm happy to answer any questions.

Hologram for Mac OS is now free!

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 09:08 AM PDT

    Hi Everybody!

We're the developers of Hologram Desktop, and wanted to introduce our app to the community. If you're not familiar with Hologram, it's a Mac OS app that lets you instantly access over 5 million wallpapers and display great desktop widgets.

We have over 50 widgets now, that let you show system info, the weather, word of the day, date and time, jokes, the phase of the moon, and lots of other stuff.

Hologram also lets you create themes, which are collections of wallpapers and widgets. You might want themes for different moods, or different image types (nature, abstract, etc), or just to have the ability to completely change the look of your Mac whenever inspiration strikes.

The idea for Hologram came from us wanting an elegant way to manage collections wallpapers, and also our desire for a way to show desktop widgets (if you've ever used Conky on Linux you'll know where we got some of our inspiration).

Speaking of widgets, Hologram comes with a developer framework that lets you create your own widgets using web technologies (HTML, CSS, and Javascript). If you have experience building stuff for the web you'll be able to make your own widgets.

Lastly, we also want to mention the fact that Hologram now also comes in a free version. We released Hologram a few months ago as a paid app. Since then we've gotten a lot of requests for a trial version, so we decided to do something even better and offer a totally free version. Hologram Free is a feature-limited version which lets you create infinite themes with 10 beautiful widgets!

Hologram PRO costs $9.99, and unlocks unlimited wallpaper downloads, all 53 (and growing) widgets, pro theme templates, and the ability to store wallpapers in a custom folder!

If you're curious about Hologram you can visit our website at:

Apple can fix the Thermal Throttling and overheat on MBPs 2019

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 04:07 AM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

i am not sure where to post this, so i am doing it here and i hope other people can help to spread this information.

    Story:

I bought a Macbook Pro 2019 last year with an i9 processor, 64gb ram, 1tb space and a Radeon 5500M.

The system never really worked well, i had several calls with Apple, they told me all their "bookmark informations" about what todo with the SMC and so on.

The issue i had is the same as tousands of others have.

in the moment i connected external screens the radeon high side watts were going up to 18-21Watts and the system started to overheat and throttle down to 1ghz performance.

One Month ago, i had a customersupport on the phoneline who tried to take me for an idiot and told me the following funny information

"You know, the macbook pro is a mobile device and there for, only has a graphics chip, not a graphics card. The device is not supposed to be used with external monitors."

After that i told the lady that i am not an idiot and she can tell this to other people but i know how tech works and there is a serious problem. She stopped there and said she agrees that i can hand in my macbook and they will try to repair it.

    Forward 1Week later:

I recieved my macbook back and a funny letter was part of the package which stated "Left Fan replaced", nothing more. Which was kinda funny because i am moniting my fan speeds and the fan never showed any signs of issues. even the apple diagnostics did not showed anything wrong with it.

    BUT

my thermal issues where gone. I connected my 2 4k monitors, i started tons of tools

1.Rider and started a server core i wrote

    1. IntelliJ and started a test automation of mine

    2. Android Studio and debugged in an emulator an android app

    3. Parallels with Windows 10 including running Battle for Middle-earth 2

    4. Discord and other apps

And the system did not gave a fuck. There was no cpu throttleing, the temps stayed at around 80degree instead of going up to 100 and start to throttle

As i did not believed that this was caused by a simple left fan, i started to dig depper. And found the following very interesting difference of my system compared to before i have send it so apple.

The Radon High Side is now taking 32watts when 2 monitors are connected.

    Request to the Community:
    - Can anyone help me to digg deeper into this topic and evaluate differences of the firmware/drivers of my macbook with others who have this issue and where the Radeon High Side is running on ~20watts? Because i personally think that this difference of the watt usage is caused by a change apple did to the macbook silently without mentioning it. there is no other explenation why my gpu would use 33% more power now.

Because i think that Apple knows about an issue with the macbooks and only fixes it for people who pretend to be a pain in the ass and wanna have it fixed. I got this fix in the moment basically when i told them i will either request my money back and they can keep that overheating piece of shit.

    Thanks in Advance.
