After hurting my lower back I was inspired to create an app that would randomly notify me to "check your posture". My free app Bubb. lets you make your own awareness reminders + communally share them for others to try out too!

    Bubb. on the App Store

Happy Sunday! I just launched my free app and am excited to share it!

Create your own randomly delivered notifications, called Bubbs, from practical to personal advice. With the ability to fine tune each Bubb. to be delivered at a preferential bookends of time, you can be the best version of yourself throughout the day. It can look something like:

    "Hydrate." M-Fri | 9a-5p | 3 times
    "Take a deep breath." | Su-Sa 8a - 8p | 3 times

"Check in on your friends." | Sa 12p-10p | 1 time
    "Take your vitamins!" | Sa-Su 8p-9p | 1 time

It's all up to you. Whatever you need, you'll know how to take care of future you. And there's a curious self-fulfilling feedback loop where choosing and creating your own Bubbs help empower your ability to actually listen to your own notifications throughout the day.

What's the difference between scheduled notifications and random reminders? The randomness will help keep notifications fresh and interesting. You won't be subconsciously anticipating the next one unlike a scheduled notification. I still always get surprised when I see a reminder telling me something and get amused because they're always so relevant! They haven't gotten annoying or something to swipe away because I know it's something I personally care about and want to be proactive with.

My favorite feature is the communal inspired section. You can anonymously upload, browse, star people's Bubbs. and then download them to give them a shot. It's fun, simple, and I highly recommend using this feature to influence others in a positive way! Share your self improvement ideas.

Finally - leverage widgets in a powerful, intentional way. Say you see a notification pop up - "Spend some time to tidy up the space around you," but maybe now's not the best time. You have the option to long press on the notification and pin the Bubb. to your widget! Right on your homescreen you've now got a relevant sticky note that will help you stick to your habits.

Anyways whew that was a lot so give it a try and I hope it helps you out!

[Self Promotion Sunday] UTM - virtual machines for Intel and M1 Macs

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 08:38 AM PST

    Hi /r/Apple

I've made a front end for QEMU in SwiftUI that works on Intel and M1 Macs. QEMU works both for emulation (running x86 on Apple Silicon and vice versa so you can run Windows 7 on your M1 Mac or Debian ARM on your Intel Mac) and virtualization (it's faster to run the same architecture such as Ubuntu ARM on Apple Silicon).

It is completely free and open source but the Mac App Store version costs $10. The free and App Store versions are identical and the only feature you get with the App Store version is automatic updates. You're welcome to use the free version as much as you want and you can purchase the App Store version if you have the means and wish to support the development.

Meetings: an app for saving and managing virtual meetings. Now updated with brand new features.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 03:47 PM PST

    Hey r/apple,

My iOS app, Meetings, lets you save and manage all your virtual meetings. Gone are the days of fumbling through emails to find a meeting link. With Meetings, joining a meeting takes one tap.

When I showed everyone this app a few weeks ago, it was really basic, which prompted some people to ask: why can't I just use a calendar app? I didn't have a great answer, so I spent hours and hours coding new features. It started with recording studio that lets you record, playback, and share meetings in high-fidelity audio. Then, I added notes to each meeting that let you keep track of what's said. On top of that- you can add meetings by Zoom meeting ID or a Google Meet code. And, one-tap join saves you time. Your meetings are categorized by one-time and repeating and filtered by upcoming or all meetings. You'll also get notified before each meeting so you never miss a beat.

Now with iPad and Mac catalyst support, you can manage your meetings on any of your Apple devices. The cherry on top is a beautiful, clean design that makes Meetings look like a native Apple app.

The best part is, even more cool features are coming soon. Let me know what you'd like to see.

Contact Pics Adder: A new iOS app that makes it easy to find and add pictures to your contacts (Sunday Self-Promotion)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:32 PM PST

I like contacts with pictures. It looks so much more personal and better when I receive emails. But how many contacts with pictures do you have?

The app Vignette aimed at finding pictures for your contacts in an automatic way. It was very nicely made with a beautiful design. Unfortunately, it was dependent on the interfaces that social media platforms offered. This made the app unreliable and, due to changes by the social media companies, not working as well as in the beginning. So, Casey Liss, one of the hosts of ATP (Accidental Tech Podcast), removed his app from sale on the App Store eventually [https://www.caseyliss.com/2020/8/26/rip-vignette\].

Although his approach was probably too ambitious, Casey's idea to simplify the process of finding and adding pictures to your contacts is still very good. I had only a few contacts with photos. It seems that this is the case for most people. We need a little help.

So, I developed the app "Contact Pics Adder". It does not aim at automatically finding all pictures for all of your contacts. It rather makes it easier to find individual pictures by searching the web. First for the name, but then the user can quickly add further search keywords by simply tapping buttons: the city, email domains or the organization. These are the fields that users have filled in for many contacts.

You may think now that you'd rather not bother spending time on this. Although it requires the user to spend some time, I found the process astonishingly well working and even interesting and fun. This was because I learned news about the people in my contacts list while searching for pictures in this way. And I was surprised myself how many contacts I found and added in a short period of time. Almost 90 % of my contacts have now a picture! I have to say, however, that I am working at a university. Many academics are visible on the web. It will be interesting to get feedback from others.

Here is a short list of features:

    - After logging in, you can do searches on social media sites (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) with one tap

    - You can select most web pictures by just tapping them

    - If this does not work, tap a button to take a screenshot

    - Optionally, add a picture from your Photos library

    - Crop an image before saving it

    - Highest level of privacy: The developer does not collect any data from this app and your contacts are not uploaded. The app itself does not require signing up. Sign-in to social media sites happens within the browser so that the developer does not know about your sign-in credentials.

    - Fair and inexpensive one-time payment to unlock all features forever

    - No costly subscription, no ads

Last Week on My Mac: Users are losing out against Big Sur’s sealed System

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 02:01 PM PST

How would it be if Siri became also your personal secretary that answer your calls like a VoIP service, IVR system

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 04:39 AM PST

Hello everyone. Siri, as all the others voice assistants (Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Samsung Bixby...), has improved a lot from 2011, changing our lives. If the next step of technology evolution is AI, it would be fantastic in my opinion if It will be applied also in other areas such as telephony. Siri could answer all your calls, interact with the caller, and report everything to you. Unfortunately, mobile carriers don't want to provide this really useful service, or it's too expensive.
