iMessage not sending/receiving group messages on iPhone, but works on Apple Watch Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:35 PM PST Phone: IPhone XR iOS 14.4 So recently I was added to an iMessage group chat for one of my classes. Since everyone was an unknown number and I didn't bother asking who was who to be put on my contacts, I just let it be. However about 4 days ago , I noticed something at the bottom that had "report as junk" or something along that line. I figure now now that it was cause everyone in the group was considered unknown for not being on my contact list. I ended up clicking it and it inadvertently deleted the chat off my phone. I was bummed and just said forget it and just went on with my day. Since that day, I have gotten an Apple Watch and it somehow shows the group chat on it with all the messages completely sent with no delay. At this time, I still cannot receive messages from the group chat on my phone, but continue to on my Apple Watch. I can message on my watch and it shows on my iPhone that I sent something to the chat, but I can't even see their reply. My watch is the only one receiving and or sending messages.
If anyone has had similar problem or knows how to fix it, I would be appreciative. [link] [comments] |
Big Sur Upgrade Killed My Boyfriend's Old Laptop... But I Saved It Posted: 06 Feb 2021 11:08 PM PST I didn't know quite where to post this, but I ran into a major issue when helping my boyfriend update his laptop that took a week's worth of troubleshooting to fix. Since I couldn't find any info out there on this particular problem, I wanted to post this somewhere so others that might be in the same situation could find it. TL;DR: If you're upgrading an old laptop with FileVault to Big Sur and the update fails so hard that your password no longer works, try finding a Thunderbolt cable and an old Mac with Mojave installed and in order to recover your data via Target Disk Mode. My partner has an older Mid-2014 MacBook Pro that he bought from the official Apple Refurbished program. It's been serving him well ever since, and he's had no reason to get a new one as his personal daily beater. When he bought it in December of 2015, it shipped with El Capitan. Since then, it has been upgraded to Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, and Catalina. Last week, he asked me if he should update to Big Sur. I was running it on my 2019 MacBook Pro just fine, and didn't have any problems with it after running it for a few months, so I said to go for it. The upgrade never finished. During the install, "an error occurred preparing the software update", which caused the system to stop doing whatever it was doing. At that point it asks you to choose a startup disk or restart into target disk mode. Here's where we run into the problem. There were no available disks. Reboot? Goes right back into the install procedure with the same failure. Endlessly. Okay... We boot into Recovery Mode and try to restart the install. Unfortunately that's not possible, either, because the system doesn't want to recognize the password for FileVault. Okay, this isn't looking good. I should pause here to say that we didn't have a current backup of this system. It had been a few years, and my partner had a lot of stuff he'd done between then and now that we could do without losing. A complete reinstall was only going to be the last resort. I boot into diagnostic mode to check the hardware. Everything looks fine. Okay. What now? Tried an internet recovery. Still no dice with the password. At this point we set up a Genius Bar appointment to see if we can get some help. In the meantime, I pop in a Linux Live USB on the mac to see if I can at least read the disk. It seems to work, so I use dd and make a disk image on an external drive to test it on another system and have a backup if we end up blowing everything out. I didn't have a Thunderbolt cable to use Target Disk Mode at this stage, so this was the only way I was going to be able to read the disk. After the image, I pop it onto my MacBook. It recognizes it as a FileVault drive and asks for a password. Unfortunately, the password doesn't work. This isn't looking good at all. We try a ton of stuff we found in forums to fix this from booting in safe mode, internet recovery mode, booting from a USB drive with the installer (via createInstallMedia), resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and SMC, booting into single user mode and setting kernel flags... Pretty much everything we could other than Target Disk Mode, because I didn't have a cable. A day later we end up at the Apple Store, and go over what we've done with the Genius. He says the filesystem is probably corrupted and the only fix would be to reinstall the OS. I'm not convinced, so I ask him if he can try connecting to the disk with Target Disk Mode on his laptop just for curiosity's sake. He grabs an old MacBook from under the counter, connects it, and we enter the password. It Works! We can see everything! We thank the Genius for humoring us, and I order a Thunderbolt cable and a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter on Amazon that would arrive in a few days. Once the cable and adapter arrive, I connect it to my personal laptop, ready for the recovery. The password doesn't work. Okay, that's weird. It worked on the tech's laptop. Maybe there's an issue with the adapter? I grab my older 2016 MacBook running Catalina to check. Password still doesn't work. Okay, what gives? It worked for the tech. Why isn't it working for me? Next thing I try is upgrading from Catalina to Big Sur. I heard there were some filesystem changes between the two, so maybe it's related? Still no dice. Well this sucks. What now? We schedule another Genius Bar appointment. We know they're not going to want to do the recovery for us, but if it works for the tech on their own MacBook again, maybe we can figure out what makes theirs so special and replicate that at home to get things working. We showed up this afternoon and talked to a new Genius. Of course they want to take the system overnight to try their own installer, but I'm not convinced it's going to work. I ask them to humor us again and connect their laptop using my personal cable first (to rule that out). It works. Okay, so what's different about this laptop than the one I have at home? We ask the Genius what it's running. It's Mojave. We decide to try our luck again. We thank the Genius, head home, and get to installing Mojave on my old MacBook. It works! Mojave, for some reason, is able to recognize the FileVault password when anything newer can not. Immediately I pop in a USB drive and start saving all the data. It's currently working on that as we speak. After it finishes, I'll erase the disk and install a fresh copy of Big Sur 11.2. I'm glad we were able to get this fixed, but still super confused and curious as to why this would work. As a test, I was also able to mount the image of the drive I took with the linux boot on mojave, which proves this is definitely an operating system issue rather than hardware. Anyone have any ideas what could have caused all this? I'd love to hear your thoughts. In any case, I hope this long-winded tale of recovered data helps someone else in the future. Thanks for reading! [link] [comments] |

iPhone XR not receiving imessages Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:35 PM PST I'm not sure if i'm in the right place or not for this question, but subreddits have always been 100% more helpful to me than any other ways to get advice. I have an iPhone XR, I bought it in September or October of 2019. For some reason, my phone won't receive imessages sometimes (I'm not sure if this also applies to text messages as I mostly just use imessage). I know for a fact that it is an issue of my phone, not my carrier or connection. I know this because my apple watch (GPS only, no cellular, so it is only connected to my phone and not my service) will receive an imessage notification, but it won't show up on my imessage app on my phone. My phone has gone over 12 hours before showing a message that should've been received long before. I have tested it, and the message has been shown as "delivered" on the sender's phone, so it's not an issue of the phones of the people i'm messaging either. Sometimes, if I suspect someone has texted me, I'll send them a message because sometimes if I SEND a message only then will my phone decide to start showing all the messages the other person sent hours before but I couldn't see. I have updated my phone, constantly cleared my app cache, and restarted my phone countless times. Even when I restart it, my imessages app won't receive the delivered messages. I've missed plans. important messages, and offended people by accident because of this issue, so I'm starting to think I just have to buy a new phone even though my current one is less than 2 years old. Anyone else have this issue or any advice? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:56 PM PST So originally I bought a new MacBook Air for my grandma but she didn't like it so I decided to keep it. I thought I'd reset and erase it so I'd be starting new and remove her stuff. But when I go to recovery startup it asks me to reinstall Mac OS Big Sur, no big deal right? Well after I go thru the options and agree to install it it asks me to to select a drive to place big sur on, my problem is its empty. Nothing to put it on. Maybe I erased too much when I was resetting the computer? Anyway there's gotta be a way to fix this I just have no idea how. I read that if you go to disk utility under recovery startup there might be something like a partition there to fix my problem, anyone know what to do specifically? Or look for? I tried adding a partition but it fails every time. Maybe I'm doing in the wrong spot? Again I don't know the specifics.. And Apple support doesn't seem to be working at the moment. I'd appreciate the help. I'm not terrible at tech but apparently not very good either and I'm lost as to what to do. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
iPhone 12 wired charging not working Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:51 PM PST I just got an iPhone 12 today and upgraded from my galaxy s9. When I bought the phone, the Verizon store was sold out of apple 20w charging bricks, so I bought a 25w Samsung brick. Unfortunately, it doesn't charge my iPhone. I tried used old USB A chargers and they work, but not my new one. The weirdest thing is that the cable works (I plugged it into my computer) and the Samsung brick + USB c to lightning cable works on my sisters SE 2020 but not my phone. I've tried hard resetting, updating, looked for solutions everywhere and im stuck. [link] [comments] |
Unable to use 3 monitors on 2020 MacBook Pro (2 USB C ports) Posted: 07 Feb 2021 05:50 PM PST Hi fellow Apple fans! I recently bought a 2020 MacBook pro. I bought an adapter that connects to one of the USB C ports and has slots for 2 HDMI and one Display Port monitors. When i plug all three monitors in, it only detects one of the monitors. I was able to plug one in at a time and they all worked as a 2nd monitor but when they're all in, it only gives me one extra monitor and when i hold down option to press the "detect display" button, nothing happens. Does anyone have any suggestions? Here is my monitor list: Asus VG249 Asus VG248 - This is the one that my MacBook is detecting as the main display when all three are plugged in. Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:29 PM PST Hi all. I am looking for iphone apps that can allow user to share their screen and allow me to remote control the phone, kinda like anydesk but from PC to iphone 12. My cousin has iphone 12 and she is quarantining herself in an apartment where 4g signal is not very good even after I sent her signal booster. After checking apple website, it seems iphone 12 4G does not run at 1800mhz or 2100mhz while the booster only support 1800 or 2100mhz. I told her to change the signal preference, if possible, but she is stuck since she is not tech savvy and I am not iphone 12 users. Is there a way for me to be able to remote her phone and help here from PC? Teamviewer is no help since it is paid now. Anydesk is only for remote controlling pc or mac not for phone. Please help. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Wife and I are new to Mac, and this part of Finder is driving us nuts Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:03 PM PST Wife just got a new M1 MBA, 512gb/8gb. It's on Big Sur 11.2 We have a one drive/office subscription for syncing files, and was until this point on Windows. She loves the mac, but there's one thing of Finder that neither of us can figure out: All of these images are in the Pictures folder, not the root one drive folder How do we get Finder to only show what is in the root of the OneDrive folder, not a whole ton of images from various subfolders (the captioned bit above is a subsample of the 400+ images showing up like that). I really hope it's an easy answer, as google hasn't provided me with answers yet, as I'm not sure how to word it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

I wanna’ upgrade; how reliable is Apple’s iPhone Trade-In program via mail? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 07:27 PM PST iPhone XR looking to upgrade to a 12 Pro Max. Usually, I go to my nearest Apple Store to trade in my old device, but right now it's only open for pickup orders and appointments. How's your experience been when trading via mail with the box they send you? I just wanna' make sure I'm getting the full $220 trade-in value and don't wanna' risk the package getting "damaged" or lost on the way. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Shared note edits doesn’t get a notification (iPhone 7 and iOS 14.4) Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:28 PM PST So there is this problem. I have a shared note with a friend, a to do list. But when we make changes, we don't get any notifications. We do get one when we are in the note itself. Has anyone else had this problem? How do we solve it? [link] [comments] |
I’m stuck after trying to install the big sur update Posted: 07 Feb 2021 10:22 AM PST Hi, I have a problem with my MacBook Pro. I was trying to update to macOS Big Sur and everything went well at first (I had tried to update it before and it always told me that i dont have enough space but today it worked) but it's telling me to choose a starter disk that i want to use to start the computer but it's just loading and not showing any options. I tried to restart but it always went back to this. It downloaded fine but then when i continued with the installation this happened. Thank you for any help. [link] [comments] |
How long before my MacBook Air 13” becomes vintage? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:34 PM PST To make a long story short, I need to replace my MacBook, or would like to. The spacebar is damaged, and it will cost more than its worth to get it replaced. I bought my MacBook Air 13inch in 2016, so I guess it's the 2015 model. It still works great so I haven't traded it in yet. Doing that will make buying a new Mac much more affordable, because when I took it in to the Apple Store to see if they could fix it, they said I could get $270 for trade in. But they also mentioned it will be going vintage soon. I imagine then, when it goes vintage there is no trade in value. Does anyone know when it will go vintage? Is there still a good amount of time? Or is it like, "do this immediately?" Thanks so much! [link] [comments] |
The only reason I don't want an iPhone is image file names. Is there a way to manage these? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 02:44 PM PST Like a lot of people I take a ton of photos. Every couple of weeks I transfer all the photos to a folder on my hard drive. Android is amazing in that it names the image and video files yyyymmdd_hhmmss, so you know EXACTLY when you took the pic or video. iOS on the other hand labels every image and video img_001 and keeps repeating it if you clear off your phone. Makes organizing the photos nearly impossible, at least by file name. And I can't transfer every file into the same folder. Is there a way to fix this? Is there a way to name the files, or change the way the files are named when you take them? Edit: I should say that I have researched a little and that I don't think there is any way to have them saved differently, but I'm hoping someone has dealt with this issue and has some kind of solution so I don't have to have a bunch of different folders every time I transfer all the photos off my phone. Thanks. Edit: Dropbox upload will rename the files to yyyy-mm-dd-hh:mm, so problem solved. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:25 PM PST Recently my Iphone 6S upgraded to IOS 14.4. Now when I try to edit any widgets on the Homepage or add a new one the phone screen goes blank and the wheel appears. It then asks for my passcode like it's been locked. It also completely re-ordered all my apps in the App Library. I've tried booting the phone and resetting it. Has anyone else had this issue? I realise the phone is getting on a bit and I'm hoping to upgrade soon but would like a fix in the meantime if there is one! [link] [comments] |
Slow Wi-Fi, isolated to AirPort Express. Posted: 07 Feb 2021 05:35 PM PST I have a 2nd Gen AirPort Express and my ISP's cable modem. When I connect my MacBook Pro directly to the modem via ethernet, I get full speed from the ISP. 600MBps, ish. While on Wi-Fi on either 5GHz or 2.4GHz networks, I get around 60-65. I reset my AirPort Express back to factory settings (holding the pinhead reset button while powering on) and the issue persists. It is not device-specific. I ran wireless diagnostics on my MacBook Pro (from the Wi-Fi menubar icon) and there are no suggested actions in the summary. I have no other network devices in my house (not an apartment), only the AirPort Express, and the issue persists when I'm sitting in the same bedroom with it. Could it possibly be a setting / configuration in AirPort Utility that is causing this to be expected behavior? (Because the max speed I always get on any device is always in the same range I stated above.) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Feb 2021 05:15 PM PST My old usb-c hub decided to break and I've been looking to get a thunderbolt dock for my MacBook Pro 15 inch (2018) running macOS Catalina. I see a lot of the requirements for these thunderbolt 4 docks need macOS Big Sur to be compatible. Seems like with this update they introduced support for hubbing which lets you connect 4 thunderbolts through 1 port. I only need 2 of these ports so I was wondering if Catalina would be able to somewhat support these docks. I'm looking to connect only 2 external displays, ideally through the thunderbolt connection, and 2 usbs for my mouse and keyboard. This is a work laptop and they control which OS is installed so updating isn't an option. [link] [comments] |
Can you guys please tell me how to transfer to iOS? Super frustrated right now Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:10 PM PST Hey everyone.
