Downgrade Big Sur to Catalina from bootable drive not working

I upgraded to Big Sur on a brand new machine [MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)] and I am having huge performance issues so I want to downgrade. I've done my research and created a bootable drive with Catalina.

I hold down the option key after restart and then select boot from Catalina. I'm expecting to then get the option to select disk utility so I can erase the drive but instead I get stuck at this window asking me to select a wi-fi network from the menu but.... there is no menu.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

    iCloud Tabs are fixed

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:52 AM PST

Hi guys, I've seen a lot of people complaining about the broken/buggy Safari iCloud Tabs on this sub for the last few months. Issues ranging from old devices still showing up, tabs not closing when trying to close them from iCloud Tabs, old tabs (tabs which were closed hours or even days ago) being shown or iCloud Tabs not showing up at all. I did also have some of these issues and so did my girlfriend, but today I noticed my iCloud Tabs were working normally again on all of my devices. I double checked on my girlfriend's devices and it was also fixed for her. This might be a coincidence but I feel like Apple has finally fixed iCloud Tabs! (without an OS update, probably a server-side issue). I hope it's also working for the rest of you, if not, I recommend rebooting all of your devices.

    How to stop checking binaries/programs

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:35 PM PST

Whenever I compile rust program or c program it takes time to respond. And when I install program like nodejs at first time it takes like 5-6 second to respond. And when my internet is slow the macos freezes like hell.

I think its probably doing some certificate check. But I don't need those stupid security thing. I know what I am doing.

Is there anyway to disable such checks.

PS: I have already disabled gatekeeper, sip but still I can't seem to disable the check. And searching on Google / Duck also doesn't show the answers

After 1 failed Time Machine restore and 1 successful one, I now have 2 copies of my Hard Drive in the finder, how do I fix this?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:16 AM PST

After 1 failed Time Machine restore and 1 successful one, I now have 2 copies of my Hard Drive in the finder, how do I fix this?

Long story short I upgraded to Catalina to update Logic Pro X. It completely effed up most of my plugins and made Logic unusable overall. I used TM to roll back to High Sierra. The 1st restore got an hour in then failed, I tried using a different backup and it was successful.

However, I now have 2 copies of my main 'Macintosh HD'; the 1st copy (successful one) seems to have everything on it, and is labelled as the Startup volume. The 2nd (the unsuccessful one) has only apps on it seems, a Library folder with only an Application Support sub folder, a 'Developer' folder and a weird text file entitled '__A_'. It's recognised as a Local Volume. I guess the failed restore partitioned my 'Macintosh HD' into two seperate copies.

*Edit\* Just noticed something weird; in the main folder for my user profile (e.g. the one at the top of the sidebar Favourites), everything is as it should be, but the Apps folder is completely empty. *Edit 2* The Startup volume copy has now got all my apps in it again for some reason. So I now have 2 copies of the HD, both with the same apps in, taking up a huge amount of space! Problem is now, I don't know which copy of the HD to delete e.g. I don't want to delete the wrong one containing the applications folder that the Mac is accessing when I use said apps.

Is there a safe way of fixing this? Is it literally as simple as trashing the copied 'Startup volume' version, or using Disk utility to unmount it? Should I be checking to make sure there aren't important startup or system items on it before doing so? I'm assuming there isn't as the Library folder on it has basically nothing in it but items for the copied applications, and there's no 'System' folder. Thanks

TL;DR: failed Time Machine 'restore' has resulted in 2 copies of my Mac's HD; the failed one is 80GB in size, mounted as a local volume in the finder window and has only apps, 'Library > Application Support' and 'Developer' folders in it. Can I just Trash it to free up the space?

Keyboard shortcuts in MacOS Messages App

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 01:22 AM PST

The iOS Messages app is completely useless, so I thought I can cleanup messages (SMS/Text) quickly on MacOS Messages app. I am surprised at how basic the MacOS Messages app is.

    1. Traversing through the messages by sender (prev, next) is extremely difficult and non intuitive (requires multiple tabs and up/down key) per message. Traversing through messages by same sender does not even work with keyboard.
    2. No Keyboard shortcut to delete messages.
    3. Is there a preference to get rid of delete confirmation? (i'd prefer undo in case of mistakes rather than annoying confirmation on every sms delete)
    4. How do I select multiple messages at once?

Just venting out here. Any other option for power users?

M1 mini - lost all data on external drive

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:38 PM PST

I've not been a Mac user for several years but I got an M1 mini a couple of days ago. I have a WD Mybook 2TB external drive from when I had a Mac before so I connected it to my mini. I forgot that I had a 1.7 TB partition for data and a 300 gig partition for backup because when I initially plugged it in, the backup partition didn't mount. I was doing something on the computer then out of nowhere a notification popped up from Time Machine asking if I wanted to use volume "BACKUP" for TM backups. I opened Time Machine to turn auto backups off because the backup partition still had an old backup from my previous Mac and there were only 5 gigs free. I then attempted to delete the backup and it was taking forever (as expected,) so I stopped the delete and figured I would just format that partition. I went into Disk Utility and told it to Erase. It unmounted the drive then attempted to erase it and I got an error. After that the drive wouldn't mount again. I figured I would reboot and try again. After I rebooted it showed up as a single 2TB partition with nothing on it.

This is my output from "diskutil list" in Terminal:

    https://imgur.com/a/Weaiw9j

It looks to me like the drive is showing up twice, once as physical and once as synthesized and that seems odd.

Thankfully I didn't lose anything vital but this makes me super nervous about how secure my data is. Anyone else have any issues like this? Am I safe using this drive as it is or should I format it and repartition with Disk Utility? Any thoughts as to why this might have happened?

    Thanks for any assistance...

How to Fix Mac Won't Recognize Stereo Speakers Issue

    Hardware video acceleration doesn't work.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:06 PM PST

Hello fellow redditers, I recently obtained Macbook Pro 2019 model, and connected it to my 4K monitor, however I noticed that every time I'm trying to watch Youtube 4K videos on either Chrome or Firefox, I see constant frame drops and huge CPU utilization which means that browser doesn't use hardware video acceleration via Intel iGPU.

I know that Core i5 in my Mac supports VP9 hardware video decoding, but I cannot find any useful information regarding how to make hardware video acceleration works on MacOS Catalina.

I have solid Linux background and in Linux I only needed install VA-API library and CPU utilization never hits 20% while watching 4K videos, in Mac world this layer, from what I've read so far, calls "Metal", but I'm not sure how to make it works, so appreciate any help regarding this.

Lost Desktop/Documents content after installing Windows ARM64 in Parallels

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:09 PM PST

So I installed the Parallels technical preview along with Windows Arm64. However, on my Mac end, it seems that when I click on Desktop or Documents, it shows the Windows VM version instead.

Is there a way to restore this? In iCloud, my desktop and documents folders are still intact. I've tried disabling Shared folders on Parallels end, but doesn't seem to work.

Media Key issues with iOS apps on macOS 11.1 and newer(Apple Silicon)

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:32 PM PST

Curious does anyone else have the issue where iOS apps don't work with media keys on macOS 11.1 20C69 and newer? Filed a radar however curious if its an issue with my current setup(s) or if this is a common issue.

Apps I tested that were affected:

    • Plex 7.11(From the App Store natively)
    • YouTube 15.47.3 and 15.49.4
    • YouTube Music 4.05.2
    • Discord 53.0
    • Netflix 13.6.0

Issue happened both on my old M1 MacBook Air and my current M1 MacBook Pro. Additionally, being in focus of the app doesn't resolve the media keys issue. Safari, Apple Music, Chrome and other proper macOS apps however respond to media keys just fine.

    Other notes:

    • Each machine was a fresh setup, no migration assistant
    • IPAs were ripped with Apple Configurator 2
    • Dailymotion's iOS app isn't affected for some reason
    • macOS 11.1 (20C69), 11.2 beta 1 (20D5029f) and 11.2 beta 2 (20D5042d) all experience this issue
    • Radar ID: FB8970689

Would like some peace of mind on whether this is widespread, and if there's any work arounds

Websites no longer ask permission for Safari push notifications

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:40 PM PST

There is an issue regarding notification prompts from websites visited through Safari.

I scoured the forums, Reddit, and spoke with an Apple senior advisor on the phone. It seems most popular websites are dropping popups for asking for permission for notifications. This may be due to the widespread annoyances from these prompts.

However, Safari requires the website to ask permission to send notifications to be added to the notifications list. You CANNOT do add the website to your notifications list manually like you can in Google Chrome.

Because most websites are dropping the notification prompts, there is NO WAY to receive push notifications via Safari. I think only Google Calendar still sends the notification prompt. Facebook, Instagram, Yahoo, NYtimes, and so many popular websites all stopped asking for notification prompts.

The easy solution would be to allow Safari users to manually add websites to their notifications list, but Apple tends to be very cautious about things descending into chaos.

What do you guys think? Do you guys have a way to receive push notifications from websites, or is this an oversight by Apple?

If you're having the same problem, let's submit feedback to alert the engineers at Apple: https://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html

RAID 1 (Mirror) Problem-Am I rebuilding from degraded drive?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:14 PM PST

    RAID 1 (Mirror) problem

I have an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Qx2 purchased almost six years ago. It has four, 4TB drives. One pair of drives is set up as a RAID 1 (Mirror) and the other two drives are just storage as each a 4TB drive.

I created the RAID 1 using Apple Disk Utility. The enclosure and its drives have been giving me problems recently where they would self eject from the desktop. More often for the RAID 1 drives. Through Disk Utility, the RAID 1 has a degraded drive.

I emptied one of the other 4TB drives to fix the RAID 1. I erased it first. I removed what I thought was the degraded drive and moved the newly erased drive into its slot.

I then went into Disk Utility and thought it would automatically repair the drive by duplicating the good drive. But I must not have chosen 'automatically' when I created the RAID 1 because I had to go through some steps for the RAID to start rebuilding.

Now for my question. I honestly don't know if I removed the degraded drive or the good drive. Would the degraded drive have a memory to let me know when I started the rebuilding process that I was using the degraded drive? Using the System Report and Disk Utility before I started this process I thought I had figured it out, but I am honestly not sure.

Does anyone know if I would have received and error message if I tried to rebuild using the degraded drive?

    Having MAJOR Audio Problems

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:54 AM PST

So, after weeks of procrastinating, I finally decided to take an afternoon to let my MacBook Pro (2018) update to the newest software. At first, everything went super smooth and I was back ready to get back to work on my video editing projects in final cut, and back to chatting with friends... except now I cannot get anything done due to this MAJOR issue which I cannot find a fix for. I've tried rebooting several times, unplugging and replugging my amps, mics, etc, all to no avail.

Let me start with my setup, as it is admittedly a little unorthodox. I use my Mac through a USB-C hub to connect a monitor and all my accessories, and through that I have 2 USB Audio Interfaces: one is a Scarlett Solo with an AT2020 mic through an XLR cable that I use for voiceovers/to mess around in garage band, and the second being an Astro Mixamp Pro TR that is (usually) my daily use headset to listen to music, chat with friends through discord, and other general use scenarios. In my sound preferences both of these devices say they have "No Input Controls" AND "No Output Controls" so they're simply not processing audio of either kind even though I know both devices are in working order.

I'm infuriated that I even pressed the update button as both of them worked just fine in Catalina. 've tried a bunch of fixes and am all out of ideas on how to make them work again. I have deadlines I need to meet for video content and this is proving to be a major roadblock...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thank you!

How do I find forgotten password of APFS external hard drive?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:18 PM PST

I have a 12TB external hard drive that I use for backups. My mac remembers the password in keychain so when I plug it in to my macbook I can access it, but I'm trying to use it on another computer which prompts for the PW. Is there a way that I can see what it's PW is from my macbook? I tried using Disk Utility to change the password but you have to put the existing password in first.
