Larger UI on scaled 4K display Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:48 PM PST SOLVED see comments. On my 32" 4K display the largest scaling option is "Looks like 1920 x 1080". Is there any way to make the UI scale to a larger size? I just wish the UI could be a little bit larger to compensate for viewing distance, I'm about 6 feet (2 meters) from the display and things are a little small. I am using Big Sur on a 2015 MBPr, external display via DisplayPort. [link] [comments]

Moving IOS to external hardrive Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:06 PM PST Is there an easy/simple way to move Catalina to my external hardrive, to run it from there? My 2015 Air Pro is running slow, I can't open office or download any apps. The exteriors big enough as it's a 2terabyte drive. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]
Annoying page reloads in Safari since Big Sur launched Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:15 PM PST Who the hell in the Safari team thought it's a good idea to reload pages if they're consuming past a certain threshold of memory? Streaming and watching lectures has become impossible on this browser lately. [link] [comments]
Macbook Air slows to a crawl when charging. Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:34 PM PST So, I'm relatively new to Macs. I've had this happen a few times, but it always went away after a bit. I forgot to plug my macbook in last night and it died tragically in its sleep. The problem comes when I plug it in. Within a few minutes, everything slows to a crawl, and the battery is charging incredibly slow. In activity monitor, kernel_task is at 250% CPU. When I unplug, everything is immediately peachy. I read that this is because the thermal sensor trips when charging, and the solution is just to charge from the right side. Unfortunately, mine only has the two ports on the left. Is there anything I can do, or am I doomed with a slow computer until it charges? Edit: Left it alone for a few hours, came back, and everything is running fine, so I don't know if this is an indicator of a deeper problem or just a quirk I have to deal with. [link] [comments]
Downgrade to Unsupported builds Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:06 PM PST Hi I'm on Mojave on a 2019 mbp. I want to install mountain lion, the .app says this os is unsupported to open the app. How can I install mountain lion on this mbp? is it possible? what about more recent versions like high Sierra? Mojave is what this one came with. [link] [comments]

Mac external display not working? Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:47 PM PST Hello I purchased an external monitor GD2410LED a while ago. I was using this monitor connected to my Macbook Air 2017 with a mini display port - HDMI conversion cable. It was working before but it suddenly stopped working. I tried - rebooting - connecting my Macbook to the charging cable - detecting display in system preference - display setting with pressing option >> detect (didn't detect anything) - Mac's resolution is set as default. I can't change my monitor's resolution since I don't have access to it. - SMC resetting - PRAM resetting - reinstall of Mac OS (I tried Mac OS High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur but it didn't work) But the monitor still does not work. I do not know why but I installed Windows via Bootcamp and the monitor worked. This is one reason why I don't think the monitor (and cable) are not physically broken. I googled about this issue but I wasn't able to figure out how to fix it. What should I do? [link] [comments]
Help upgraded to ssd and now stuck on yosemite Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:15 PM PST Ok so got my old macbook pro mid 2012 back from an old friend. Threw an ssd in and upgraded the ram to 8gb. Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:34 PM PST My 2019 MBP 16 has been backing up to a DiskStation 218+ for over a year. For no apparent reason, time machine decided to shit itself today with the above message. It's refusing to back up unless I completely wipe out my current backup. When I enter time machine it shows no backups prior to today. When I click "Verify backups" it spends about a minute "Looking for backup disk", and then stops. Any idea what's happening and whether I can do anything to recover my backup? Things I've already tried: Below are some messages I've found in the console. error 20:18:27.308418+0000 backupd-helper Invalid mountpoint '/Volumes/Time Machine Backups' - failed to open '/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/.iotest', error: 30 Read-only file system error 20:18:41.941493+0000 diskarbitrationd unable to unmount /Volumes/com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/<my name>MacBook Pro/2021-01-14-211600/Macintosh HD - Data?owner=0 (status code 0x00000001). error 21:05:49.819292+0000 backupd Invalid mountpoint '/Volumes/Time Machine Backups' - failed to open '/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/.iotest', error: 30 Read-only file system error 21:06:00.019128+0000 backupd backupd exiting - cancelation timed out error 21:06:00.020523+0000 backupd-helper XPC error for connection com.apple.backupd.xpc: Connection interrupted error 21:06:00.020889+0000 backupd-helper Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup: Failed to send message to backupd error 23:07:05.105242+0000 backupd Backup failed (501: BACKUP_VERIFICATION_FAILED_PREVIOUSLY) [link] [comments]
How to prioritize Dictionary above Safari in Spotlight? Posted: 16 Jan 2021 01:16 PM PST Before upgrading to Big Sur, which I despise, I could open spotlight, type a word, for example, "insouciance", and the first entry would be the word in dictionary. Now, however, when I do this the first entry is always Safari. This is less efficient and annoys me. I would disable Safari altogether, but I often use it to bring up Safari in Spotlight simply by typing "S". So, I would like to preserve this function. Is there a way that I can prioritize the Spotlight search results by application, file type, etc. without installing a third party solution such as Jenkins...Jeeves...,or whatever the name of that butler-like Spotlight alternative is? Apps crashing when trying to save with Ben Sur on MacBook Air(2014) Posted: 16 Jan 2021 01:06 PM PST After upgrading to Ben Sur: Anyone else having problems with apps crashing when trying to save? Apps that I've tested are for example: - SnagIt - I can open the editor and old captures but the app crashes when I try to take a new screenshot. - Photoshop - I can open images but it crashes when I try to save It seems to me that the issue is when the app needs to access my hard drive/folders to save a file. I have given both apps access under System Preferences>Security & Privacy [link] [comments]
Trying to upgrade a mid 2014 MacBook Pro to Big Sur Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:55 PM PST When I go to system preferences and check for a software update, there isn't one listed (I'm still using Sierra currently). I tried downloading Big Sur via the App Store instead, and it said 6 minutes remaining, etc until the loading bar reached the end, but no installer ever popped up. I tried again with the same result. Any ideas about what's going wrong here? [link] [comments]
[HELP] Can't upgrade from Mojave to Catalina Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:12 PM PST I have the latest version of Mojave with all supplemental updates installed. When I run the Catalina installer from the Apps folder, I get the error
But I'm not trying to migrate, I'm simply trying to install Catalina 'on top of' Mojave. Even when I reboot and go into Recovery or boot from a Catalina install drive, I get the same error. I had downgraded to Mojave from Big Sur (because Big Sur is a hot mess) and now trying to go back up to Catalina. Any help? [link] [comments]

Anyone has different combined screen times showing on mac and iPhone. Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:36 PM PST I'm on my Mac and it shows "all devices" have a screen time of 24hr a day. On my iPhone it shows my "all devices" have a 7 hour a day screen time (which is obviously more believable). Why doesn't screen time just work properly? any idea how I could reset this? Sold Macbook Air 13" 2015 and it's asking buyer for hard drive password! Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:27 AM PST Hi, I sold my macbook air 13" 2015 (4gb ram, 128gb hd) and before I did I thought I'd fully reset it by entering recovery mode, wiping the hard drive and then reinstalling MacOS Big Sur... The buyer has messaged me and is asking why the laptop is telling them to enter a hard drive password. What I want to know is whether there is a way to walk the buyer through fully resetting the macbook without giving him the password. If I have to give them the password, what data is still on there, is there any risk of them accessing anything? thanks! [link] [comments] |
