Larger UI on scaled 4K display

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:48 PM PST

    SOLVED see comments.

On my 32" 4K display the largest scaling option is "Looks like 1920 x 1080". Is there any way to make the UI scale to a larger size? I just wish the UI could be a little bit larger to compensate for viewing distance, I'm about 6 feet (2 meters) from the display and things are a little small.

I am using Big Sur on a 2015 MBPr, external display via DisplayPort.

    Windows features' analogues?

    Windows features' analogues?

Hello all, I tend to be a power user when it comes to Windows and macOS because I find it helps with my productivity. I still have a Windows PC but bought an MBP 6 months ago.

This is not a hatepost, but rather, I'm trying to increase my productivity on macOS. I think macOS is superior in a lot of ways, to be quite honest. Especially the Terminal, TouchBar, well-made apps, etc. I'm loving those. I do not, however, don't want "get used to it" answers from fanboys who can't take any criticisms of macOS. We should always be wanting improvements for products we pay for.

I just haven't been able to increase my productivity to a speed that I can on my Windows PC; and I really wanna be able to! So your help would be very much appreciated.

    1. My biggest hurdle, I've realized, are keyboard shortcuts. I realize most of these I just have to learn. That's fine. What I do wanna know is: do "Access Keys" exist? See the following:

    https://preview.redd.it/zi31hnldvtb61.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9d0397cb5d7ea5be8177ee44ed1324243c16eed

What I loved about doing schoolwork in Windows is that I can do everything from my keyboard. I actually like Windows' shortcuts because there's a shortcut for everything (all accessed by simply pressing the Alt key). When I wanna go into a (frequently-used) setting (i.e. a bullet point), there's a shortcut for that and the app shows it to me right there. And it also has the functionality to show me subsettings.

so TLDR 1: are there "Access Keys" for settings and subsettings that will allow me to rely heavily on my keyboard as opposed to trackpad?

    1. Windows management (and not just snapping)

This is another area where my productivity is really lacking; and I've identified a few problems I'm having. Some of these I've fixed by having to buy apps like:

    • Tiles (for snapping)
    • ActiveDock2 (for Dock-looking taskbar, much more productive),
    • Pock (that puts my Dock/taskbar on the TouchBar; without compromising native functions)
    • Mission Control Plus (for quiting a program while on Mission Control),
    • OneSwitch
    • AltTab (Git)
    • Vanilla (to hide/remove menu bar icons)
    • Copied + LaunchPanel +DropOver (Windows 10 has a nice translucent pop-up now that integrates emojis, symbols, GIFs, and the clipboard from both phone and laptop. Again, accessible through simple shortcut. Does macOS have this? If so, it would be great!)
    • Alfred / Flashlight (allowing me to create custom search engines like Wox for Windows or Custom Search in Chrome)
    • Homebrew (package manager like Chocolatey in Windows)

TLDR 2: None of these compromise native function, but add to it. But the last remaining problem, the last one (!) about windows management that affects my productivity is:

    i) Mission Control doesn't have the windows that I minimize!!!!!!! I haven't yet found a solution, and it's really annoying me. ActiveDock2 and Pock help tremendously with this by isolating icons of active windows; and then allowing me to access those on the TouchBar. But it would still really help if I could just access active minimized windows in Mission Control!

Windows operates on desktop environments just as much as macOS does. Windows has desktop shortcut analogues just as much as macOS does.

Please let me know if you have a solution!

Edit: This is what I meant by an integrated clipboard. Is there a similar functionality for macOS? Thanks.

    Moving IOS to external hardrive

Is there an easy/simple way to move Catalina to my external hardrive, to run it from there? My 2015 Air Pro is running slow, I can't open office or download any apps. The exteriors big enough as it's a 2terabyte drive. Any help is appreciated.

Who the hell in the Safari team thought it's a good idea to reload pages if they're consuming past a certain threshold of memory? Streaming and watching lectures has become impossible on this browser lately.

Macbook Air slows to a crawl when charging.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:34 PM PST

So, I'm relatively new to Macs. I've had this happen a few times, but it always went away after a bit. I forgot to plug my macbook in last night and it died tragically in its sleep. The problem comes when I plug it in. Within a few minutes, everything slows to a crawl, and the battery is charging incredibly slow. In activity monitor, kernel_task is at 250% CPU. When I unplug, everything is immediately peachy. I read that this is because the thermal sensor trips when charging, and the solution is just to charge from the right side. Unfortunately, mine only has the two ports on the left. Is there anything I can do, or am I doomed with a slow computer until it charges?

Edit: Left it alone for a few hours, came back, and everything is running fine, so I don't know if this is an indicator of a deeper problem or just a quirk I have to deal with.

    Mac external display not working?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:47 PM PST

    Hello

I purchased an external monitor GD2410LED a while ago. I was using this monitor connected to my Macbook Air 2017 with a mini display port - HDMI conversion cable. It was working before but it suddenly stopped working.

    I tried

    - rebooting

    - connecting my Macbook to the charging cable

    - detecting display in system preference - display setting with pressing option >> detect (didn't detect anything)

    - Mac's resolution is set as default. I can't change my monitor's resolution since I don't have access to it.

    - SMC resetting

    - PRAM resetting

    - reinstall of Mac OS

(I tried Mac OS High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur but it didn't work)

But the monitor still does not work.

I do not know why but I installed Windows via Bootcamp and the monitor worked. This is one reason why I don't think the monitor (and cable) are not physically broken.

I googled about this issue but I wasn't able to figure out how to fix it.

    What should I do?

Help upgraded to ssd and now stuck on yosemite

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:15 PM PST

Ok so got my old macbook pro mid 2012 back from an old friend. Threw an ssd in and upgraded the ram to 8gb. Old hdd was fried or something.

Anyhow it installed mountain lion. I was able to get up to yosemeti because it was apparently in my itunes. But now I can't get any higher. Can't find any updates. The system tells me I have no updates.

I know I can't get to big surf but I should be able to get catalina yet it won't update itself to anything newer not can I find it in the app store of course.

Any help appreciated. Thanks! Side note. Thing runs like a new pc almost with just the ssd upgrade.

How can I find out why my time machine has shit itself? "Time Machine detected that your backups on “DiskStation.local” can not be reliably restored. Time Machine must erase your existing backup history and start a new backup to correct this."

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:34 PM PST

My 2019 MBP 16 has been backing up to a DiskStation 218+ for over a year. For no apparent reason, time machine decided to shit itself today with the above message. It's refusing to back up unless I completely wipe out my current backup. When I enter time machine it shows no backups prior to today. When I click "Verify backups" it spends about a minute "Looking for backup disk", and then stops.

Any idea what's happening and whether I can do anything to recover my backup?

    Things I've already tried:
    - Reboot the macbook
    - Reboot the diskstation
    - Pretend it's not happening and go watch a movie
    - Manually open the backup location through finder: this worked once and I saw subdirectories with dates going back all the way, but now it's no longer working

Below are some messages I've found in the console.

error 20:18:27.308418+0000 backupd-helper Invalid mountpoint '/Volumes/Time Machine Backups' - failed to open '/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/.iotest', error: 30 Read-only file system

How to prioritize Dictionary above Safari in Spotlight?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 01:16 PM PST

Before upgrading to Big Sur, which I despise, I could open spotlight, type a word, for example, "insouciance", and the first entry would be the word in dictionary. Now, however, when I do this the first entry is always Safari. This is less efficient and annoys me.

I would disable Safari altogether, but I often use it to bring up Safari in Spotlight simply by typing "S". So, I would like to preserve this function. Is there a way that I can prioritize the Spotlight search results by application, file type, etc. without installing a third party solution such as Jenkins...Jeeves...,or whatever the name of that butler-like Spotlight alternative is?

Apps crashing when trying to save with Ben Sur on MacBook Air(2014)

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 01:06 PM PST

After upgrading to Ben Sur: Anyone else having problems with apps crashing when trying to save?

Apps that I've tested are for example:

    - SnagIt - I can open the editor and old captures but the app crashes when I try to take a new screenshot.

    - Photoshop - I can open images but it crashes when I try to save

It seems to me that the issue is when the app needs to access my hard drive/folders to save a file. I have given both apps access under System Preferences>Security & Privacy

Trying to upgrade a mid 2014 MacBook Pro to Big Sur

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:55 PM PST

When I go to system preferences and check for a software update, there isn't one listed (I'm still using Sierra currently). I tried downloading Big Sur via the App Store instead, and it said 6 minutes remaining, etc until the loading bar reached the end, but no installer ever popped up. I tried again with the same result. Any ideas about what's going wrong here?

[HELP] Can't upgrade from Mojave to Catalina

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:12 PM PST

I have the latest version of Mojave with all supplemental updates installed. When I run the Catalina installer from the Apps folder, I get the error

'This source contains a newer release of macOS. Your Mac requires an upgrade before you can migrate from this source'.

But I'm not trying to migrate, I'm simply trying to install Catalina 'on top of' Mojave. Even when I reboot and go into Recovery or boot from a Catalina install drive, I get the same error.

I had downgraded to Mojave from Big Sur (because Big Sur is a hot mess) and now trying to go back up to Catalina.

    Any help?

Big Sur bluetooth audio dropouts/corruption workaround

Big Sur bluetooth audio dropouts/corruption workaround

I recently got a macbook M1 air and bluetooth issues have been plaguing me ever since. While we're waiting for guys from Cupertino to fix these issues I might have figured out a workaround for the issue where the audio drops for 2-4s but then kicks back in or when the audio gets all corrputed.

Go to audio menu and switch to onboard speakers and then back to the bluetooth ones. This one fixed the issue for me 6 out of 6 times so far.

    go to audio menu

    switch between these two

Sorry if this has been posted already but I haven't found anything similar (or even a solution) to this after few days of googling.

    Hope it helps.

I'm on my Mac and it shows "all devices" have a screen time of 24hr a day.

On my iPhone it shows my "all devices" have a 7 hour a day screen time (which is obviously more believable).

Why doesn't screen time just work properly? any idea how I could reset this?

Sold Macbook Air 13" 2015 and it's asking buyer for hard drive password!

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:27 AM PST

    Hi,

I sold my macbook air 13" 2015 (4gb ram, 128gb hd) and before I did I thought I'd fully reset it by entering recovery mode, wiping the hard drive and then reinstalling MacOS Big Sur...

The buyer has messaged me and is asking why the laptop is telling them to enter a hard drive password. What I want to know is whether there is a way to walk the buyer through fully resetting the macbook without giving him the password. If I have to give them the password, what data is still on there, is there any risk of them accessing anything?

    thanks!
