Can a FileVault SSD be formatted and used again?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:57 AM PST

    Hi,

I am thinking about encrypting my boot SSD of my 2018 MBP, for extra security. I have a few questions:

    • If I forget the password AND the recovery key, can I still wipe the OS and reinstall macOS? I understand that I would lose data in the process, so I keep continuous backups of my stuff.
    • Does it affect the speed/longevity of an SSD? My MBP is currently quite fast, and I don't want it to go slower.

    Thanks in advance

Remote Desktop Solution for watching videos

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:40 AM PST

I'm looking for a remote desktop or terminal server solution in which the user can watch youtube videos and stuff without really noticing it's a remote desktop session. For windows I use Parsec but that's not an option here since it's not able to host on a OSX machine and VNC is way to laggy. Any ideas here?

Upload files into iCloud Drive without letting it consume my Mac storage

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:32 AM PST

Hi, I upgraded my iCloud storage as my mac was running out of space. Basically I wanted to upload heavy folders on the iCloud drive that contains photos and videos that I don't access on daily basis but the problem I'm having is that after uploading those folders to iCloud Drive, its creating duplicate folders on Mac consuming all the storage once again. I just want to keep iCloud Drive separate from Mac internal storage, is it possible? Please help, thanks in advance.

Big Sur looks better in Light Mode

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:30 PM PST

Has anyone seen and considered this - Big Sur (and it's default apps) look a lot better in light mode rather than in dark mode.

Easier to read and somehow I find it easier on the eyes, even at night.

    Problem with reinstalling MacOS

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:19 AM PST

Hi, i've got a question regarding the process of reinstalling MacOS Lion (or any other MacOS that is compatible with my mid 2012 MacBook Air).

My mother received the new M1 Macbook Air for christmas, and gave me her old mid 2012 Macbook Air for me to use just for simple tasks like watching Youtube or internet browsing. We transferred all of her stuff using the migration assistant and after that I simply erased everything that was on her internal storage (120gb ssd), which seems to have included the operating system. I'm pretty sure she was using El Capitan or Yosemite, not sure which.

Now after I turn on the computer and boot into internet recovery mode using command + option + r, I'm only given the option to install MacOS Lion, which came with the computer originally, but that doesn't work, as I get an error saying "can't download the additional components needed to install mac os x".

I tried creating a bootable USB to install MacOS High Sierra using my mothers new laptop, the M1 variant, but it does not let me download the needed files from the appstore, because apparently you can only download MacOS versions that you've previously already installed? (i'm not sure if I understood that correctly). I'm guessing that because the new mac came with Big Sur already installed, I won't be able to create a bootable USB with an older version of MacOS to install on my old Macbook Air?

My question is, is there anything I can do to make this laptop usable again?

    Thank you!

Repeating old medias to import from an iPhone into Big Sur v11.1's Photos app.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:38 AM PST

    Hello.

Every time my client and I open a two weeks old 13" 2020 MacBook Pro (Intel)'s updated Big Sur v11.1's Photos app with an USB connected iPhone 11 Pro Max (iOS v14.3) to import new medias, we get the same 15 MP4 videos and 1 JPEG image (from year 2016 to 2020; he has almost 16K medias since his iPhone 4S and 6+ [also two former MacBook Pros since 2012] usages).

iCloud isn't used so it can't be that. I already tried rebooting both the computer and iPhone. From what I have seen online, many users had this problem for years but none of their suggestions worked except a workaround to manually select to import. :(

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

Keyboard layout problems on Macbook Pro M1 & Big Sur

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:19 AM PST

My keyboard is set to the correct Input Source (German - Standart) and my keyboard has the german layout. These settings have always worked for me. Since I got this new M1 Macbook with Big Sur I have some problems.
    1) Whenever logging in, I need to go to the task bar, select German - Standart so its in the quick selection and then I have to select it once more from there.
    2) When pressing option + L (thats where the @ is) I get this symbol: "˛". Pressing option and Q gives me the @.

Does anyone have similar issues? Couldn't find a fix yet.

Big Sur performed way better than Catalina (and older versions) about screen mirrorring

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:34 AM PST

    I have a 2015 mbpr 13" 8/128.

I normally updated every version of mac os ever released. Until Big Sur, screen mirroring to my tv (with same router) was always laggy and I never could have used it for watching anything in my browser. But when I upgraded to Big Sur, it started working way better and I could have watched up to 720p in my browser by mirroring my screen.

After some issues (and poor performance) I downgraded to Catalina with clean installation. With all those hope I tried to mirror my screen again and I feel a little bit of shocked because that laggy mirroring came back even with clean installation. Same router, same tv, same internet connection, same browser.

Any person living same thing with me?

Any ideas how big sur was so better about screen mirroring than previous versions of Mac?

Big Sur keeps opening old preferences pane

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:23 AM PST

A lot of things prompts the old preferences pane for me. For instance, opening bluetooth settings from the top-right menu opens the old menu, with the error message swiftly following: "Could not load bluetooth preference pane."

I have to manually open the new preferences app and go to the setting.

It's getting annoying. Anyone experience the same thing? Solutions?

How to find missing files in two cloned external drives

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:07 PM PST

I cloned an EHD to another, but upon closer inspection, some files are missing. Both drives are at least 3 TB, so doing it manually would be exhausting. How can I accomplish this? I need to be sure both drives have the exact same files because I'm going to erase and encrypt one of them. Thanks.

    XCode problem

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:01 PM PST

Hello everyone, now that I finally got my new MacBook Pro (m1), I wanted to start setting it up right away.

After I installed the command line tools via Terminal xcode-select install, I remembered that I also need xcode and downloaded it from the AppStore.

Since then, when I type python3 or swift in the terminal, I get the following error/warning:

Class AMSupportURLConnectionDelegate is implemented in both ?? (0x1f5bf38f0) and ?? (0x118ad02b8). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

how do i get rid of this one? I assume that the languages were installed twice and thus mess up the namespace.

    How can I solve this?

Thank you already for your answers

    Access rights for migrated users.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:57 PM PST

    Access rights for migrated users.

    Hi all.

I just bought a new Mac and migrated all my users from my old Mac using TimeMachine.

Therefore, I believe that the users on the new Mac and the users on the old Mac are identical.

However, I noticed that the access rights set on the external HDD were not functioning properly.

Specifically, the user on this Mac does not have access rights to the files that were owned by him on the old Mac.

When I checked the ACL in Terminal, I found that the user I had set up on the old Mac was shown as the following ID.

This is the ACL I checked on the new Mac. The user on the old Mac is \"E31DBAA9...\".

What I want to know is how to replace the access rights set for the old Mac user with the new Mac user.

    Example :

    [old Mac] user:A, Shared user:B

    - File A (owner A, shared to user B)

    After migration

    [New Mac] user:A`(migrated), Shared user:B`(migrated)

    - File A (owner XXXXX, shared to user XXX)

    ↑up

    Restore this file

    - File A (owner A`, shared to user B`)

Of course, if the file is so small that you can count it on one hand, you can just use the chmod command again to set the access rights.

However, since my external hard drive contains many files with separate access rights, it would be smarter to be able to replace the user.

I just entered a command to remove an ACL for a file, and it failed because it could not resolve the UUID.

This means that I will have to go through the hell of using the Finder to remove the "unknown user" from each and every file and directory.

If you know how to solve the problem, I would appreciate it if you could let me know.

Does anyone know how to block outgoing connections for an app in OSX?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:29 PM PST

Is there a method to block outgoing (not incoming) connections for a certain 3rd party app without using any tools (such as Lulu or Little Snitch)?

I searched for this online and someone mentioned that the hosts file needs to be edited, but the hosts file can only block certain IP addresses (not 3rd party applications themselves).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
