Double click on chat makes new iMessage window open Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:29 PM PST Hi this is more of an annoyance than a genuine issue, but i was wondering if anyone knew how to disable the feature in iMessage where it opens a new window of a specific conversation if you double click it. I somehow manage to accidentally do this all the time and it's really irritating. I have a 2017 MacBook Pro and I'm running Big Sur. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:02 AM PST Please remind me to never jump on new software releases until they've had all the bugs cleared out. I updated to Big Sur shortly after its release. Now, here I am, weeks later, installing a new font which took approx 1 second now takes approx 30 seconds. Safari takes approx 20 seconds to launch. Youtube is like a lucky dip of whether the video will play or not. Using Photoshop and Lightroom has become almost impossible (although waiting for the beachball to go away is a great opportunity to go away and bake a cake). I am so frustrated I am considering just wiping the whole thing back to factory settings and starting again. FYI, before the update I had no issues at all. Any advice or should I just wipe and start again? Thanks for hanging in there. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jan 2021 09:07 PM PST So until recently I have been a Chef and have had little use for a computer other than email which I just used my phone for anyway. Being out of work during the pandemic I sat down and put literal months into building an online portfolio, learning Pages and Notes, and all the things that go along with being computer proficient. I was using my 2012 MacBook Pro (I know, I know) until it finally died on me at the end of November. Since I NEED a computer to find work when the World opens back up I bought the bottom-tier M1 MacBook Air and I'm blown away by the difference. Rather than spend the extra $400 or so on the 1TB ROM I just bought the 256GB internal and planned to buy an external SSD HD to store anything of size on however I've never gone past 15GB on my iCloud for a Mac/iPad/iPhone combo so it wasn't a concern. I went today and bought a WD My Passport SSD 1TB from Best Buy as they had it priced at $140 which has been the best price Ive seen since I started watching (marked down $80 after Christmas) and I've formatted it the way I've been directed to and have saved my first Time Machine back-up. Heres my issue; Im ready to start saving some stuff like pictures and movies that I had on my MacBook Pro but I don't know how I'm supposed to do that. Im a relative whiz with copy and paste shortcuts and I know my way around Finder extremely well but what I can't find is any information on how to do it. Do I just create a folder in the first window of the Hard Drive and start saving to it like I would a Finder Folder? I just don't want to willy-nilly dragging files and such onto the hard drive only to find out its a huge No No and end up corrupting a hard drive I just paid $140 for a paperweight. I'm waiting to hear something from anyone to tell me if treating it like a regular finder folder and copy & paste or if there's some further formatting I need to do to not mess up my time machine saves. I' going to post this elsewhere as I'm literally sitting here waiting to Strat transferring my data. Thank you guys again in advance! [link] [comments]
Can I Install Big Sur From a Flash Drive? Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:24 PM PST I'm trying to install Big Sur, but it tells me I need 10GB more of free space. The Big Sur installer itself is 12GB and change. Can I copy this installer to a flash drive and run it from there? Or will that screw up the installation somehow? I tried googling this, but only came up with tutorials on making a bootable Big Sur volume, which is not really what I want. [link] [comments]

how to enable hibernate mode on macbook air m1 big sur? Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:46 PM PST Although I was able to get this work on a Macbook Pro 2015 Catalina after much, much reading, I'm failing to do so on my new Macbook Air M1 under Big Sur. When doing a pmset -g, I see a lot less options presented. Running sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25 does absolutely nothing and I believe the option isn't even registering as running pmset -g | grep hibernatemode comes up empty. I want the laptop to hibernate where it will save all RAM content to disk and then power down the laptop so as to save power. I do not mind a bit longer startup time. [link] [comments]
Quicktime player keeps crashing when I record Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:55 PM PST I've been wanting to make some youtube videos. I have only been able to record once but after that it crashed when I retried [link] [comments]
Can I update to MacOs Catalina from appstore? Posted: 01 Jan 2021 10:38 PM PST I don't want to update to Big Sur because I feel it's buggy right now. I am running Mac Os Mojave on my 2017 Macbook Air. So will I have any issues if I upgrade to Catalina from the playstore? Posted: 01 Jan 2021 10:46 AM PST I have a MacBook Pro running Big Sur 11.1. While working from home, I tend to use my Windows setup more frequently, as I have 3 monitors attached to my desktop PC. Sometimes I would love to stay at my desk and then use my regular keyboard and mouse, but on macOS instead. And since I have a MacBook Pro, I figured I could remote into it. Downloading VNC Viewer on my Windows PC allows me to remote into my MacBook, but it can only show the MacBook's single monitor at 2880x1800 resolution. If I instead remote into my other laptop running Windows 10, all my 3 monitors are now acting like I attached 3 monitors to the laptop. Does such feature/software exist for macOS? I want it to act exactly like if I disconnected my 3 monitors and connected them to the MacBook via cable. I heard that Microsoft's Remote Desktop app for macOS works the other way arround (if the MacBook has multiple monitors attached, you can span Windows 10 across all of the monitors as individual screens), but I haven't heard of a software that works Windows -> macOS. Save image to Photos from Finder (Big Sur) Posted: 01 Jan 2021 09:00 PM PST When I download a photo (jpeg, jpg, png, etc.), how do I save it directly in photos? In finder, I can click on the Pictures tab, but from there I'm taken to three random application (iPhotos, Photo Booth, Photos), not actually a folder with my photos to save my photo in. Multiple Keyboard Shortcut Menu with BetterTouchTool for macOS Posted: 01 Jan 2021 05:08 PM PST I just discovered an incredible feature of BTT the other day! If you assign multiple actions to the same keyboard shortcut you get a dropdown menu with all of the shortcuts listed with the ability to navigate and select the menu via the keyboard. You can also map these to a mouse button if your device supports button remapping. For example, whenever I press the function+up button on the side of my house it copies whatever I've highlighted; when I press funtion+down it brings up my shortcut menu. See video. I have a few categories of these actions if anyone is interested! [link] [comments]

Why Did Apple Hobble Voice Memos? Posted: 01 Jan 2021 01:05 PM PST Apparently there's no way to batch send voice memos from an iPhone to a MacBook any more aside from emailing or air dropping each and every one? It used to be that you could simply sync your phone and they would file into music... Now I can't even get air drop or iCloud to work, which isn't preferable, but its vastly better than sending 158 voicememos via email for sure. I feel like I've been royally fucked over in terms of work-flow, because I'm an artist that uses voicememos as sketches for music. [link] [comments]

Menu bar stops working on M1 MacBook Air Posted: 01 Jan 2021 12:00 PM PST Hi all, I've been running Big Sur on my M1 MBA for a few weeks now and overall I've been really happy with it. One issue that I'm having is that after a while, the menu bar stops working across all applications after a while. Clicking on the apple menu, the program menu and any of the other menus (up to Help) does nothing. Oddly enough, the status menus on the far right all work fine. Apps all work normally, nothing is hanging. The only thing that can resolve it is a restart, and it will work fine for a couple of days, and then stop working again. I set up this Mac as new and I don't have a lot of software installed, yet. Suggestions? [link] [comments]
ok can we revert to the old GUI? Posted: 01 Jan 2021 05:41 PM PST This was a step back for apple OS, which I've been using since OS 8 for working at 36 years ago I had my first apple computer. I'm all up for changes for the better but this was not really better, UI/UX is worse than prior version for example the notification they added a small x that only appears when you mouseover, then by god don't miss it by a hair or it's gone lol that's just an example and now I can't click on my clock anymore it pops up the notifications. I know they tried saving space but maybe they should have fixed the spacing between the icon on the top right bar? Anyway, I still love apple because its OS is Unix base and solid system, but don't please if you're just changing things to say you're changing them don't. Take your time and make sure it's for the better. [link] [comments]
