How many people keep their iPad unlocked?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:03 AM PST

I am wondering how many people have their iPad unlocked because they keep it at home. So no Keypass or Face ID just a non-security swipe.

iPhone as a controller for iPad

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:51 PM PST

Is there any way where I can use my iPhone to control games on my iPad ? I play COD on my iPad and the experience is amazing. But the screen is too big and too hard to use the buttons to play the game. I was wondering if I could save some bucks and use my phone as a controller instead of buying a PS4 controller or a XBOX controller.

    Sidecar and Fast User Switching?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:58 AM PST

Let's say you have a Mac mini with an iPad running sidecar as the primary display (after disconnecting other display used to set up sidecar)

    • If you use Fast User Switching in macOS to switch to a user with a different AppleID/iCloud account, would sidecar still be active for that second user?

    • Does the iPad display "sleep" after a period of time (dictated by macOS?)

An app that encrypts handwritten notes?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:27 AM PST

Does anyone know of an app that allows you to encrypt a note/notebook file of your handwritten notes? I know the apple notes app allows encryption on text files, but I prefer to use a third party app, like GoodNotes for more features, and wasn't sure if there was an app that allows you to encrypt your handwritten note files.

Anyone else also using an iPad 4 in 2021?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:25 AM PST

I'm using an iPad 4 on iOS 10 as a daily driver. Many apps still work on this, and those who don't almost always have an older version that does. The iPad 4 still runs well and is fast, and from first glance it's unlikely you could tell the difference between the iPad 4 and the newer iPads. It still feels modern and runs a modern (2016) OS. I'm typing this right now on my iPad 4, latest Reddit is incompatible but the older version offered runs fine. I can imagine app support will reduce heavily soon, considering iOS 15 will come out this year.

iPad Genius Bar support is horrible

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:32 PM PST

I bought an iPad Air a year and 3 months ago. I use it for maybe a couple of hours every week and couple of weeks back the screen flickered off and I can no longer see anything on the screen. Apple support said they don't inspect iPads and I'll have to get it replaced because it's been more than a year... I understand that it's out of warranty, but shouldn't they at least try to figure out what's wrong?

After some digging I found the issue myself https://support.apple.com/ipad-air-3rd-gen-program-for-blank-screen-issue). It's a known issue that Apple offers to fix for free. I described it almost in the same words at the Genius Bar and their response was that I should buy a new iPad. Isn't it fair to expect Genius Bar employees to know problems with Apple devices or at least double check with a coworker before telling you to buy a new device?

How not to lose your apple pencil

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:43 AM PST

I just got the 2nd version of the apple pencil and I have a question. How do you guys keep it safe? Like when traveling or so. Keeping it on the ipad to charge continuosly seems like a bad idea. I'm afraid I might lose it somehow.

    Surface like stands?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:01 PM PST

Has anyone found any type of really flush kick stand type of add on for their iPad?

I had a surface go and now have an iPad Pro 12.9. The iPad is better in every way pretty much except I must say the kickstand of the surface devices was pretty amazing. Especially since how flush it was in the design of the device. My question is there any product like that? Something that is quite flush to the device (no large case or anything that impacts the front or lie down flat ability) for iPad?

I feel like this would be great either something magnetic or clip on to the bottom half that supports multiple angles like the surface products do. I really don't like those fold up cases..

    Organizing photos

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 03:07 AM PST

Hi, I have a bit of a newbie question

When I go into my files, I can't see my photos. So I have to go into Photos.

When sorting things into folders, is there a way to see everything the way I would be able to on a computer?

And by that I mean see everything that I downloaded or took pictures of, and then sort them into folders.

My issue right now is that the "view all" is "Recents," and when I move stuff into a new folder, it doesn't go away from Recents. It lets me sort one photo into multiple albums. So I don't know which images have been sorted out or not.

What I want to be able to do is to organize folders exactly the way I would be able to on macOS or windows. Is that possible?

    Thank you!

Can an iPad Pro/magic keyboard duo be my sole computer? My experience.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:18 PM PST

Before you go away thinking, "yeesh another one of these", firstly there's a TL;DR at the end. Secondly let me explain why I'm making this post.

I have been wanting to make a post like this for a couple days now, but just now am getting into it. I want to explore the whole idea that an iPad Pro can replace your main computer. I'm going to discuss my specific use case, thought process, purchase and transition, positives and negatives, and finally, my thoughts on this question. I have been using my iPad Pro 12.9" for roughly 6 months now (since July-ish) as my sole computing device and I want to share my long term experience to help other people who might be considering the iPad Pro as their next computer.

And quick disclaimer: this is my experience with the iPad Pro as my main computing device. I understand that there are people who may have had different experiences with it, probably due to different use cases and priorities. But I still feel the need to share a more comprehensive review of this question, as when I was making this decision such information wasn't super clear about it. And again, if you really don't want to read this wall of text, there's a TL;DR at the end.

    USE CASE

It bears noting that the idea that an iPad Pro replacing your laptop is a very niche statement. Only certain people with certain use cases can pull it off, despite what apple has marketed. However, to provide context, I will provide my use case. I work as a (new) high school english teacher, private tutor, and middle school educator. I am also a graduate student in my second-to-last semester towards getting a masters degree in teaching and credential. The reason I include this section is to (1) provide context, and (2) provide a disclaimer that not everyone should consider the iPad Pro as their next laptop.

    THOUGHT PROCESS

So, after considering my use case, i decided to give it a shot. As a student, the iPad Pro would work similarly to my MacBook, since I was already using pages as my note taker. As a teacher, I thought this wouldn't affect my workflow by much either, since much of the material we use is cloud based (google classroom/google drive), which were useable on the iPad Pro. The iPad Pro connects to external devices like monitors and printers just as easily as my MacBook. If I opted for the 12.9" I wouldn't be losing much screen real estate. As for benefits, the iPad Pro is undeniably more powerful and faster than my previous device, a 2015 MacBook Air (i'm not a technical guy so please excuse the unscientific-ness of my statements), I would be getting a touchscreen device, a world class rear-facing camera (for document scanning and occasional picture taking) and also a dang good front-facing camera as well. I'd be buying into the iPhone experience but on a bigger screen, which was an experience that I had spent a lot of time with. In my mind, I was sacrificing almost nothing and gaining a great amount. In fact, I remember saying that the only thing I was losing, was Java Minecraft (lol).

    PURCHASE AND TRANSITION

I purchased the iPad Pro (2020, 12.9", 128GB of storage, wifi only, space grey) mid-July of 2020 for $899.00 (education pricing). To complete the package I also purchased the corresponding magic keyboard and the AirPods Pro, which were discounted/packaged with Apple's education program (which is great btw, I don't think people take advantage of it enough). It took a while to ship due to COVID-19, but eventually, all the pieces arrived and I had a swanky new iPad Pro. The initial transition over was not bad at all, the only hiccup was finding a usb-a to usb-c cable that would facilitate data transfer. However, as much as the iPad's file management could be improved, it wasn't difficult to use and transferring my files over was relatively painless. I sold my MacBook shortly thereafter for $500. Total cost out of pocket: like $950. Not too bad.

I also purchased a few other accessories to go with it, here's a list if you were considering it: a collapsible iPad/iPhone stand that can hold my iPad in any useful configuration, HDMI to usbc adapter, a 13" laptop sleeve, a 6ft usbc-usbc cable, 65W power block (with 2 usbc ports and 1 usba port), 2 feet long mousepad, and an ipad portfolio case. Total cost: roughly $35-40, with some being tester products.

    POSITIVES, NEUTRALS AND NEGATIVES

    POSITIVES

    • what was previously discussed: touchscreen, rear facing camera, 120hz display/true tone, great speakers, chipset.
    • typing experience on the magic keyboard is top notch. In addition, note taking with the apple pencil is great.
    • connectivity between devices is seamless (mouse, AirPods, monitor, Appel pencil).
    • versatility as both a laptop and a tablet.
    • gaming experience/ media consumption/app store
    • usb-c
    • good productivity functionality (split screen, PiP)
    • design language

    NEUTRALS

    • viewing angle-it really is not that bad. Apple could have added maybe 1 or 2 degrees in my opinion, but's good as it is.
    • no function keys on iPad- personal preference but I got used to not having them quick. Don't miss them particularly.
    • magic keyboard- for the 12.9", it's perfectly fine and comfortable. Does occasionally tip over if you place it on an uneven surface (like a pillow)
    • front facing camera on the left when in portrait mode- a bit cumbersome but not impossible to work with.
    • Weight- also not that bad. Slightly dense but not much heavier than my MacBook air. Although this in itself is not a negative, it does make for a pretty hefty projectile, and can damage things around it easily (like the magic keyboard T.T, i nicked mine like 2 weeks in. Luckily I had apple care so they sorted me out).

    NEGATIVES

    • app functionality is really limited in comparison to a laptop, especially google apps (i.e. chrome, docs, slides, sheets). Not impossible but sometimes painful. magic keyboard has great functionality with apple apps, not so good with other apps (i.e. no adaptive cursor)
    • monitor aspect ratio/ use with monitor is limited.
    • certain apps don't work with split screen (particularly apps that share video)
    • no screenshare- outside of some apps like discord or zoom, screenshare functionality is super limited, and also even for discord/zoom, pretty painful to perform. Was a dealbreaker for me once I found out about it and due to COVID moving us all to virtual classrooms.

    THOUGHTS ON REPLACEMENT

Can an iPad Pro replace a laptop as your only computing device? The short, fast answer is no. Laptops still have a lot of benefits, mostly functionality wise, that make a laptop still the better choice over an iPad Pro. But the real answer is more nuanced. Of course it is possible to go 100% iPad, but it depends on your use case. If you're just using it for browsing, media consumption, note taking, even essay writing, it's great. But once you need some more specific functions, it kind of falls apart. Would I recommend it (as someone who has tried it for 6 months)? Unfortunately, no. The laptop is something that has been worked on for years, and even basic chromebooks have features that are unfortunately missing on the iPad Pro.

Now thats not to say that the iPad Pro is completely useless. In my opinion, until perhaps iPadOS develops further and pushes a couple key laptop features, the iPad Pro is a phenomenal secondary computing device. And by phenomenal I mean absolutely, superbly phenomenal. Its an amazing device that can do almost everything. But until it can hit that final ~10% of functionality that a laptop has, I can't recommend using the iPad Pro as your sole computing device. And if you currently use a laptop as a secondary computing device, the iPad Pro can definitely replace it.

    CURRENT SETUP

With those final thoughts in mind, here's my current setup. The reason I'm including this is to give an idea of how I use the iPad Pro with my use case. On my desk I have three main pieces that I use for work, and I've listed their purposes:

    1. The iPad Pro- I use this as much as possible as my main typing device, I use it to lesson plan, to create documents and powerpoint presentations (through google), and I use for almost all media consumption and gaming.
    2. A Chromebook- I use this as my "main" computer, although it is weak and I want to get something more powerful. I use this mainly as my "teaching window", it screenshares and webcams my face/teaching through a browser based conferencing app.
    3. A 24 inch HP monitor- I use this as a third screen. Usually I'll connect it to my chromebook when I teach for more screen real estate. I rarely connect it to my iPad as it just mirrors it, and that's not useful to me. Not to mention the monitor when mirroring the iPad just looks horrendous with the black bars on the side.

Knowing this, what would be my recommended setup now for maximum bang/buck? What would I have done in hindsight? A couple of things.

    1. If you're like me and you really want the iPad experience, go with the 11". Unless you have some sort of physical condition that requires a 12.9" , or just want to splurge a bit on yourself, the 11" is probably more cost efficient than the 12.9" knowing that it won't replace your main computing device.
    2. Kept my MacBook Air- or bought a strong, cheaper non-apple laptop for like $400- $500. Or, bought a lower end MacBook Pro.
    3. Monitor stays the same though. If you've never owned a monitor, its life changing lol.

Also, I would never use any of the google apps from the app store. Just using them natively off safari is way better productivity wise imo.

    CONCLUSION/ TL;DR

    • Can the iPad Pro be your only computing device? Unfortunately, not quite.
    • Can the iPad Pro be your secondary computing device? Heck yea
    • Can the iPad Pro replace your laptop? Only if you have some other main computer.
    • Monitors are amazing.

For those who took the time to read this all, thanks! And hopefully you found this helpful in some manner.

Ipad stand that doesn’t cover the center

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:53 AM PST

Does any of you know any ipad stand that doesn't cover the center? Like a stand that supports the Ipad from the side of the back. Every stand I've seen supports the Ipad from the center. The reason I'm looking for this type of stand is so that I can stick on my cooling fan at the very center since that area heats up the most when gaming.

Is there a way to have a music player recognize MP3 files transferred via the Files app?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:28 PM PST

That's the question above - if I transfer MP3 files, I can select and play individual songs, even play it in VLC - but one at a time, and VLC does not recognize the media library automatically, like they would in any other system - is there a step I've overlooked? Any other apps I can try?

    Thanks in advance!

    Music production VSTs on IpadOS

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:36 PM PST

    Hi folks.

I'm considering to buy an Ipad Air 4gen to get myself away from the PC desk and get some rest while consuming content (and do other things like the possibility of seeing music tabs in my guitar practice sessions away from my working environment).

I'm into music production too, but my current pc is a little bit garbage for this purpose and I mainly use it for programming.

You can say "Dude, better buy a PC or a Macbook or an IMac" but those aren't as portable as the Ipad (and maybe can't fulfil my needs as I explained before), plus the "Scribble" feature blows my mind, but I'm a little bit concerned about the available VSTs and plugins in the IpadOS ecosystem, I use Analog Lab 4, and EZdrummer but couldn't find those apps for IpadOS.

Is there software that can be compared to Analog Lab 4 and EZdrummer for IpadOS?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Home page links to websites

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:33 PM PST

When I create a home page link from safari for a web site, sometimes the resulting link opens up a new tab in Safari, but other times, it opens a new instance in its own page, with an icon on the "recently used apps" list, etc.

Why is there this difference? And is there a way I can change which behaviour I get for a particular link?

    If/when is this a possibility?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:45 PM PST

Someone on this sub had a comment where they noted that they would love an iPad loaded with macOS that could switch between computer and tablet mode when in and out of the magic keyboard. That would be an incredible device.

I don't think that the merging of an iPad and MacBook would detract from lower end iPads or higher end MacBooks. For me, this would be the perfect device, and it is readily apparent that Apple is pushing to have the consumer view iPad as their next computer. Is it inevitable that it actually does become, a literal computer?

What are your thoughts on if this would ever happen, and if so, when it might become a reality?
