Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:56 PM PST Hey guys, I just received my M1 Air base model to replace my long-standing 2010 MBP 13" and needless to say, I am extremely excited as it's already proving to be quite the upgrade! That said, could anyone recommend any threads detailing things I should change/do immediately as far as system settings and apps go, as well as any super beneficial apps/utilities to get? I am a long-time Chrome user and plan to continue using Chrome as my primary browser. Installing Chrome and logging into my account via the browser seemed to pull over all my settings and old extensions. Most of which, I had installed a long, long time ago and don't even know if they're beneficial or even hurting performance. What Chrome extensions/plugins are recommended these days for privacy/productivity/etc? I probably will delete/disable everything else I don't need. Also, I used f.lux on my old MBP for years and always enjoyed it; however, it appears that Big Sur also has the automatic dimming/blue light capabilities from sunrise to sunset -- Do I even need f.lux any more on my new M1? Another app I always used was Boom/Boom 2 - Is that worthwhile and considered something I should download again for the new Mac? I felt like their EQ or whatever did provide better sound on my old MBP but could have just been placebo. Lastly, what about antivirus software? I haven't downloaded anything yet, but had always had Avast installed on my old MBP. What is recommended here, as far as a free option, if anything? Any other helpful apps/tips/settings would be extremely helpful! I realize this has to have been asked multiple times in general terms, so any help via your personal commentary or linking threads that have extensive suggestions for a similar scenario would be much appreciated! Thanks guys!! [link] [comments]

I'm very confused when installing ide or language using m1 Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:10 AM PST Hello I bought m1 and it's my first macbook. I installed homebrew on my terminal and also installed pycharm, python3 ... using homebrew. I found some articles about m1 users should use terminal on rosetta to install some programming langauge, ide, docker.. etc. because of compatability. I'm very confused. should I delete all programs and reinstall them by using rosetta terminal? Is there any website or article about explaining how to install correctly on m1 mac? I grabbed a towel to absorb the water up and my the time I had dabbed up the majority of the water the laptop turned off on its on. Don't know much about laptops but does that mean it short circuited and is done for ??? If so ... any cheap laptop recommendations? [link] [comments]
Is 8GB of swap memory being used a lot? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:59 PM PST Hi Everyone! I just got my 8/256 M1 MBA this week and it's been quite slow, I was expecting it to be quite fast in comparison to my 2015 16/256 15'' MBP but it was even slower. I decided to check the activity monitor, and it showed that I have 8GB of swap used and I'm wondering if that's too much and I should exchange it for 16GB because I wasn't even at my full workload at that moment Thanks! Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:38 PM PST Hello all! I'd though I'd just ask around to see how shipping went with the M1 MacBook Air base model. I had ordered mine on the 25th of this month, with a arrival of February 2nd- 9th, my question for those who ordered the base model is did you receive your MacBook Air around the time frame given by Apple? or if anyone who has the same arrival time frame, is your order still being processed?? Just looking for a estimate as to when I should be expecting the arrival since my college classes begin the 13th of next month, so I want to be prepared for possible long delays, along possibly being prepared with a backup computer just in case this MacBook arrives late. Thank you. :) [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:31 PM PST Years ago I thought I killed my 2010 MacBook Pro in a water spill accident. A few years later I revived it when I realised that it wasn't dead, but the keyboard (and by extension, the power button) was. I eventually turned it on using this guide to power on the laptop shorting power pads on the motherboard. I could use the macbook providing it never turned off (Removing the back to power on with the motherboard everytime is ridiculous) but eventually the charging port and / or charger died and I basically laid the laptop to rest because I don't know how to repair it. I want it back. It's still a laptop and aside from a lack of charging port and a power button it should still work. Where can I start to try and refurb it? Would it be expensive? Is this a service somewhere in the UK would offer? If it's expensive and / or just too difficult for someone as oblivious as me, it's obviously not going to happen. But I might as well ask. TL;DR; Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, broken charging port, broken keyboard / power button. Powers on when charged but can not charge. Can I refurb it / get it refurbed? [link] [comments]
MacBook Air 2017 - Temps on Big Sur Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:34 PM PST Just did a clean install of Big Sur last night. I am using macfancontrol and I can see that even though its winter here - The CPU temps average between 55-70 C just doing normal web browsing etc. Is that normal? I hadn't paid attention to my temps earlier. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:51 PM PST My new MacBook Air doesn't sit flush on the front left, and wobbles a little bit when I put my wrist on the left of the trackpad. I sent it in for service and they "performed a realignment", but it's still the same – so I'm thinking it's probably uneven feet rather than a warped body. I was going to ask Apple for an exchange after reading this thread, but I'm wondering if I'm being too picky and wasting my time for such a slight wobble. Should I just keep it and put some tape on the foot or something? Has anyone "fixed" a wobble? [link] [comments]
M1 MacBook Pro or M1 MacBook Air Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:50 PM PST I am currently going to a high school that has a computer science program which I am going to be doing. I need a laptop that's I'll be able to handle code and programming and stuff. I will also go to a University/Collage to be studying computer science to become a software engineer for apple. I also have a YouTube channel and video edit using Filmora X. I will also be playing Fortnite mostly. So I need a good battery life. And something that will last through high school and collage. Should I buy the 2020 13” MacBook Pro or wait for the 2021 model this year? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:52 PM PST Hi all, I am looking for advice as to whether to buy the 2020 model of MacBook Pro. This is my first time buying a MacBook, so I thought I'd ask for advice here on this sub. Considering the year has only started it makes sense to invest in the 2020 model, however, I don't mind waiting until September for the 2021 MacBook Pro, and I can make do with what I have currently. In your opinion does it make much of a difference if I wait to purchase this years model? Is a years difference normally just an incremental update or is it worth waiting? As an aside, does the Steam gaming platform and store operate well on this generation of MacBooks? An added benefit would be if I can use it to game as well. Thanks for your responses in advance. 2015 Macbook Air with 4K display performance Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:03 PM PST Hello apple pros. I'd like to get a 4k monitor for my wife, so that she can work comfortably on home office. Is there anyone that has experience with connecting 2015 Macbook Air via displayport to 4k panel? I managed to find out that it supports 60hz this way, but I'm wondering if there might be any issues with performance, while working in 3 apps at once simultaneously etc. (like the Chrome, Word and Outlook combo) I appreciate any feedback, thanks EDIT: it is the 4GB ram version, although I think cpu and integrated graphics might be the bottleneck [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:32 AM PST Sorry if this is not the correct place to post, but I can't seem to find a better place. I've downloaded the microsoft office 365 package, however it's saying that I have to have a yearly subcription for $70 a year. Is there a way around this? I only want to pay for Microsoft Excel. I don't need any of the other tools. Google sheets is not good enough for my needs. I wish I could just buy Microsoft Excel 2019 or something and never update it.... thanks for the help! Macbook Air (Early '15) Laptop dies even after replacing battery Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:51 PM PST Howdy, I have had power issues with my laptop. When I disconnect the power adapter, my laptop dies about 10 seconds afterwards suddenly. I've replaced the battery (the computer is 5 years old) Went through the recharge process and when I detached the cord and 5-10 seconds afterwards, boom dead. Even trying to turn on the laptop unplugged, it will die as soon as it asks me to log-in. Well, I left it plugged in overnight and through the day, and when I came back from work. Attempted to unplug and try again. 5 seconds later, boom dead. When I have it up and running with the cord, I check the power supply in the preferences and doesn't say anything related to the battery. Looking for advice as to my issue. Thanks.
