My early 2020 macbook air with i3 is laggy and stuttery time to time Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:32 PM PST Like how to make the computer manage ram better and prevent apps from using too much cpu? A lot of times the apps all the sudden use too much cpu and it makes entire computer laggy and unusable. So i have to quit the app thats under battery icon shown as "using high energy" And I'm NOT talking about resource heavy apps. I only use iMovie for resource heavy apps and never have problems with this app. I'm talking about Safari, and had same happen with Stocks yesterday when i had it open. I only had like 5 apps open. Maybe i don't know how to use mac properly? Help would be appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments]
Audio output does not automatically switch to plugged device Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:06 PM PST Hi! My MBA M1, with updated MacOS, does not automatically switch to any external audio device when plugged. I tried using the audio jack and the HDMI, but the audio output stays on the default speakers. I currently have to manually switch to my preferred audio output device. I'm used to the automatic switching of audio with my old MBA. Is there a way to resolve this? Many thanks in advance! Best way for my old camera to talk to my new-ish 2019 Macbook Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:42 PM PST Apologies if this is too basic: would appreciate directions to a more appropriate place if so: I have a sweet older Canon SK710 HS compact camera, and it talked to my 2013 Macbook just fine by cable. But now I've got a 2019 Macbook with Thunderbolt, Catalina and no compatible Canon wifi upload software for Catalina. Thunderbolt's sort of confusing. The camera's got a USB-A to USB interface cable. What's the best way to get images over to the 2019? Just buy a Thunderbolt card reader for the SIM card? A USB-A to Thunderbolt/USB-C cable? Is wifi still an option? I'm old and confused. Thanks. I’m a student (law at uni) and i need a new Macbook (Ram-topic) - 8GB or opt for the 16 GB? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:16 PM PST Hi, I just bought a M1 MacBook Pro with 8 GB, and 512 GB storage for just 1199$ - But as I am waiting for it to get shipped I start to doubt if i chose correctly. I am only going go use the MBP for productivity tasks such as browsing, Office 365, and some very light photo editing. I would like the MPB to last about 4-5 years before I NEED to replace it. Whats your thoughts? Should I convert down to the 256 GB and upgrade to 16 GB, for the, in my case 300$ more? Is the 8 GB enough for it to survive and be useable and somewhat fast for the next 4-5 years? [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:50 AM PST Hi all, I recently upgraded to a Macbook Air M1 and I love it! However, as a teacher I frequently use and am most comfortable with Microsoft Office. I don't want to subscribe to 365, would I be able to download Home and Student 2019 on the M1 chip? I'm tech savvy in the classroom, but I can't find details online about Home and Student 2019 so I appreciate any advice! I just don't want to pay for it and then find I can't use it! I know google docs is a thing, and that pages is good, but I'm very accustomed to Office and would prefer to stick to that :D [link] [comments]
New to mac, best shortcuts/apps? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:24 PM PST As the title says, im really new to the whole MacOs type of thing, just picked up my M1 pro yesterday as a matter of fact. Id love to hear some of your favourite shortcuts, or apps, that you use, and what they do. I do know the basic stuff like copying and pasting, but beyond that im pretty lost, so your help would be most appreciated 😄😄 [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:39 PM PST Just bought the new M1 air and it will not mount my WD MyCloud wireless storage ( see here). Can anyone recommend a good wireless storage? I want to stream video from the storage. In addition to not mounting the drive, in-browser access lacks codec compatibility for certain file types (such as .wmv). [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro M1 - software issues, or faulty laptop? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:11 PM PST Hi there, So I got my MacBook Pro M1 today - base model, 8GB, 256GB SSD - and so far, it's been... a mixed bag of tricks. I've been having an issue with the laptops displays not booting up properly after a sleep/wake, or even after cycling power. It was first apparent just moments after the initial set up and after closing the laptop, the laptop display or touch bar just wouldn't wake up. I tried restarting using the power button and giving the computer a full restart with chimes and everything, and yet the display wouldn't come on. It took me to open and close the lid a bunch of times for it to then magically come up with the display again, only for me then to close it after to take it upstairs and surprise surprise, black screen. It would make the charging noise when plugging in the charger, VoiceOver when triple clicking power but nothing else. After talking to the Apple rep via the Apple Support app (who was nice, but didn't really help) who said to get it into safe mode and that wasn't working. He then suggested updating to 11.1 which upon reading similar issues about the Mac mini's not waking up or the external displays not kicking in - thought it may have a fix for my issue when sleeping/waking. So far since updating - it's fixed when I'm in the OS and using the laptop, but when the laptop is powered off or at certain points, it just black screens and doesn't let me use the laptop until I open and close the lid again. It's also worth noting that I'm having a lot of difficulty getting into Safe Mode and seeing those recovery disks - it just black screens and seems to go straight into the OS, or power cycles. I don't know if it's the hall sensors that are faulty or it's a hardware issue, or something to do with the OS sending interrupts to the display, or what. I'm stumped. Is there anything I can do to try and mitigate the issue or fix this? I do have access to a MacBook Pro 2014 to try and run the configurator but it's still on Mojave, so I don't know if that will do anything. The only other thing is I don't know if I'm being facetious being an early adopter and macOS being a buggy ride right now across both Intel and M1 users, maybe I'm just being impatient? But when you spend $1400/£1200 on a laptop and you can't get into safe mode and takes a bunch of waggling and restarting to get the display working again - I'm a little concerned it's gonna cause me more issues down the line, and taking it back to the store is no easy feat given I have to post it back and wait a while for a replacement (John Lewis, UK). Any advice or assistance or if anybody else has had the same issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks once again for your time, stay safe. :) EDIT 1: Okay, so, tried booting into safe mode - it works because VoiceOver says I'm at the boot picker... but there's no display. So is that a software fault or a hardware fault? [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:41 PM PST I'm currently looking for a productivity laptop that fills the niche between my gaming laptop and iPad. Therefore, gaming isn't a huge concern (though being able to run Civ 6 and Rocket League would be a huge plus). I will primarily be running Microsoft 365, Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, and Android Studio. I would also like a device that is lightweight and comfortable to use in bed/on my lap without the fans going crazy or any overheating. I've been leaning towards a Windows convertible (Surface Book 3, HP Envy or Spectre, Lenovo Yoga, etc.). The SB3 is my favorite, but I have doubts about longevity. I also have a hard time justifying the cost and tradeoffs of a reliable touchscreen/pen input Windows laptop when I already have an iPad. Yet, I still need a solid Windows/Mac device for running school programs and programming (and I try to be future-proof when buying devices). I think I can justify the cost of the base model 2020 13" MacBook Pro. Do you recommend this? I'm pretty unfamiliar with MacOS. I've found it very unintuitive in the past, but otherwise I'm impressed with the performance, form factor, quality, and longevity of Apple devices. How extensive is the ecosystem between the iPad Pro (10.5", 2017) and the MBP? I feel relatively "locked out" without having an iPhone. Otherwise, what else should I consider before making the switch from Windows to Mac? Feel free to link any resources! Thanks for any feedback. Edit: Considering the M1 model after watching MKBHD's videos! Good or bad idea? [link] [comments]
Mid 2011 MacBook Air won’t update to High Sierra (10.13.x) currently 10.12.6 Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:01 PM PST When I install the update from the Apple website it tells me I need to be running on 10.13 to install the 10.13 update, which is strange. I'm trying to run safe mode as we speak. It's supported, as listen on apple's website. But it just won't install. Any ideas? Edit: no luck with safe mode. Same message. [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:35 PM PST So I decided to get the M1 Air recently. I die dead to use the Apple trade in program towards my new purchase. I was able to pick up my new computer, and I also received the trade in kit for my old laptop, and via FedEx tracking I can see that the Old laptop has been received. My question is when should I expect my refund on my credit card, and after what period of time should I be concerned? [link] [comments]

Over 130gb of "Other" storage on MacBook Pro 250gb - tools for freeing up space? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:43 PM PST I can't even install Big Sur because half of the hard drive space I paid for is being taken up by something and Mac won't tell me what it is. Are there any tools for efficiently cleaning up the hard drive? I've seen things like CleanMyMac X, but also heard that they're potentially damaging [link] [comments]
M1 MacBook Pro drops frames while scrolling, is it only me? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:30 PM PST While I scroll through reddit on both firefox and safari it's like my macbook jitters. Do I really need to make a time machine backup before updating to Big Sur? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:54 AM PST So I've been waiting for a while to update my MacBook Air (2020) to Big Sur, and when I got airing to researching it some, I've seen you should always make a backup before updating. Do I really need to do this? I don't want to spend 50$ on a external hard drive just for this. I know it's rare problems do occur but I've seen on this sub and other subs that the Big Sur installation has froze, but restarting fixes it. I also don't have a whole lot of downloads and apps on my MacBook, just Chrome, Zoom, etc. All this into account should I still make a backup before updating? [link] [comments]
Is there a risk with having orders made new (e.g., m1 16 gb models) ؟ Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:07 PM PST Im not sure of the process of if these devices are more likely to get broken do i need to buy apple care? I'm safe myself, but just for their software or cords breaking, im not so sure. Seen some repair videos on youtube and now, i'm a bit worried [link] [comments] |
