Tricking Apple into realeasing new AppleTV?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 03:20 AM PST

So I have been looking into buying AppleTV for 6 months already, reading everywhere that new ATV release is overdue. Obviously I dont want to buy the "old" one because once I buy it, there is 100% chance they will release new one the moment I buy it.

My idea: since there is 14 days "no questions asked" return policy on items bought online in my country, I could just buy the old one and return it immediatly to force Apple into releasing the new one right?

I tried the Apple TV app on PS5, here are my thoughts.

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 11:04 PM PST

    - It felt so weird using the controller to navigate the app when i've used the remote for the last year.

    - Easiest sign in i've ever had to do. Thanks QR Codes

    - I love the fact I can access my purchased stuff through the app.

    - Probably won't use it since I have the device but I'm glad it's there so more people can experience the Original Content.

    - Man I wish the PS5 Media remote would work for the Apple TV device. Surely it will.

On YouTube every time I press a directional button on remote it acts as if I am trying to scrub the video and is really annoying. Any fixes?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 01:35 PM PST

As the title states I am having troubles with YouTube where every time I use a directional "Button" by tapping at one of the four edges and I am going from the timeline down to related videos or anywhere else where I go past the timeline it acts as if I am scrubbing or trying to swipe the pad in a way to skip in the video and it has really become a big pain. I am trying to convince my wife and family that we should use Apple TV 4K's in every room with a TV for simplicity and connectivity but this is causing me to get some pushback from the wife and my kids.

I have looked online but most of what I find is related to older releases or the 9.XX version where you had to pause to scrub. Is this still an option, if so, I cannot find it anywhere.

As a note I am on the latest version of TvOS and have an Apple TV 4K 64GB that I bought just 6 months ago from Apple Store. I know we can use our phones as a remote and that is one of the big reasons I am pushing for it since we are a full Apple Family but for my youngest kids and even for us its not always ideal or most convenient.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Am I going insane or did Apple remove the ability to mark content streamed through “Computers” as watched/unwatched?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 05:50 PM PST

Not sure if this got removed in a recent version of tvOS but you used to be able to press and hold the select button on the remote and mark things watched or unwatched.

Helpful info for match content/frame rate

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 09:12 AM PST

TLDR at bottom! Sorry if this is already known by the masses, I may be a little late. I have an LG C9, amazing tv. I had an ATV 1080p version for the longest time and finally upgraded to ATV4k. Of course I turned on HDR at first but started reading about the set up and everyone says SDR 4K 60hz (as long as your tv can handle it obvi) with match frame rate/content. So this works, and everything looks better in SDR (and isn't overkill brightness wise) except of course the screen saver (no fix for this as far as I'm aware, QQ) My issue was that when playing anything (whether HDR of SDR) the screen would flicker to allow the tv to adjust to the content, and it would take so so long, to either go back, start watching a show or anything. I thought I'd have to let go to the match content and settle, but it's the match frame rate that does this flicker. Certain tvs already compensate for the frame rate match, and therefore you don't need the atv for that. So now I'm enjoying the match content and it's appropriately adjusting, without the long blackout screen of the frame rate.

Hopefully this is helpful for anyone else late in the game to owning an ATV4K! Happy viewing and happy early thanksgiving!

TLDR: turn off match frame rate to avoid the long blackout screen transition if your tv can handle frame rate automatically Edit: Here is a link to TVs from 2018+ I believe that handle the frame rate issue by itself. Read up on it, definitely helpful! https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/motion/24p

how do you map the "TV/Home/Control Center" button to a learning universal remote without the original remote?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 10:30 PM PST

For years I've been using the Logitech Harmony line of remotes to control my equipment. I recently bought a bunch of Apple TV 4Ks, but I sold the remotes because I knew I'd either lose them or break them.

I can fully control the Apple TVs with my Logitech Harmony remotes, except the "TV/Home/Control Center" button isn't available. Logitech has a button for "home" and one for "menu" but both buttons do the same thing, it seems. Long press on the "home" or "menu" buttons also don't do anything different, or bring up the control center.

I had no use for the control center until I set up family accounts and with iOS 14, have the ability to have rudimentary access to HomeKit lighting scenes. But as it stands right now, I cant access any of this stuff because I can't map the button to my actual remote without using my phone's remote app.

Do any of you have any ideas/experience with this type of setup who can help?

Best resolution for viewing older content?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 05:55 AM PST

    Hi,

So I recently bought an Apple TV and noticed that when I stream stuff from Netflix or Amazon Prime the quality isn't too great, however when I stream the newest 4k movie by Sophia Coppola it is perfect.

I played around with the resolution settings (720p @ 50 Hz) and that helped but didn't quite solve the problem (for example scenes with more activity still had points where they were extremely pixelated). Any thoughts on how to optimize the image? I am using it with a 1080p projector.
