The base model M1 MacBook Air is more than enough for most of you

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 11:09 AM PST

I got the base model M1 MBA today. After using it all morning, I can distill all the buying-advice thus:

If you're asking if one of the new MacBooks will be sufficient for your needs, get the MacBook Air with whatever storage you prefer.

Everybody else will know why they need the Pro and in what configuration.

This thing is mindbogglingly fast. There's no heat emanating AT ALL from the Safari browsing I've been doing all day after updating the OS and messing about with the settings and whatnot. I don't imagine it will slow down at all over the next 5 years at least with my usage: browsing, college work, writing, watching videos, and editing photos now and then. I don't do video work and don't intend to, and I won't play any games on this. I don't envisage needing the extra 8gb of ram with my usage, so that one's up to you really. So far at least, this thing doesn't look like it'll be ram-thirsty anytime soon.

Take a bow Apple, take a bow...

    Random tag on my Mac?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 06:51 PM PST

Roaming around my Mac, I found a really bizarre tag with Russian text on it. Inside it had an mp3 file of the nyan cat song??? I am legitimately so confused. I scanned with malwarebytes but it didn't detect any viruses. How did this happen? I'm sure that I never made that tag, nor have I ever downloaded the Nyan Cat song.

    MacBook Air M1 for development

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 02:35 PM PST

I received my base Air M1 today, and as we already know it's very fast and a big improvement from the previous model.

My MacBook is primarily used for development. I have to use a Windows machine for development work which pays the bills, so the work done on the Mac is more of a hobby.

Any way so far I've tried Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, PyCharm and Unity.

Both VS and VS code install and run fine. Performance is on par with current Intel Macs. I did have an issue running a .Net Core MVC web app from Visual Studio, it builds but doesn't run. However after running the .Net Core SDK installer manually I was able to launch the web app from Terminal. There maybe a fix but haven't had time to look.

PyCharm and Python both install ok and work as expected. As with VS performance, it's similar to Intel Macs.

Unity Hub and Editor installed fine, but Editor crashed on first launch. It's been ok since, but performance isn't great. You get to see the spinning beach ball a lot. Hopefully there'll be a native version of Unity Editor soon.

Help with finding right macbook for music

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 04:57 PM PST

I need help!! I am looking into getting a macbook to start recording music on. I have been looking stuff up online but any video or article I find is super confusing and I just can't figure out which to get for making basic music. I eventually would like to get Logic too. I really can't spend $1799 on a laptop and need some help and advice. I also get confused on all the specs and really just need someone to tell me what to get.

BPutil to modify security settings of Apple Silicon / BigSur

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 10:42 PM PST

Does anybody know when/where this tool will be available? IT security policy of my company explicitly enforces host based firewalls, so we can't install Big Sur which bypasses firewall software like LittleSnitch. I hope with this tool we will be able to remove system processes from "whitelist" bypassing firewall.

MacBook Pro 13 M1 16gb unified memory? Good enough for programming video editing

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 10:38 PM PST

I'm waiting on my MacBook to arrive I upgraded it to 16gb of unified memory but left the ssd to 256. Is ssd a big deal I bought a LaCie high performance mobile ssd 1tb looks perfect next to space grey MacBook on the video I seen it on is it worth spending the money xtra money for ssd on the Mac 13 m1? Or will LaCie be enough? I'm doing video stuff with Final Cut Pro maybe some hacking and programming I hear we can't run windows yet on the new m1s how about kali Linux? Or should I cancel order and upgrade to more ssd on the actual laptop? I like the idea of keeping data on a separate unit from camera to laptop from laptop to ssd disk apple charges waaay to much for 1tb of ssd like wtf? And is 16gb even worth it over 8gb? Maybe for gaming and video editing and stuff that requires some power.

Any M1 MBA throttling with Zoom? Also 8GB vs 16GB RAM Question.

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 06:46 AM PST

My wife's 2020 intel MBA runs its fan like crazy during the hour-long Zooms she's routinely on. We're probably going to replace it with a 8/512 M1 MBA. Just curious if anyone has seen throttling on long Zooms.

Also, any insight into whether 16GB RAM vs. 8GB would make a difference in Zoom performance? Aside from Zoom (which she'll no longer have post-COVID) it's primarily a web surfing device with some basic MS Word. She doesn't do photo/video editing, no games, doesn't even really stream Netflix or whatever on it. I really don't want to spend the extra $200 to upgrade to 16GB for no reason.

    Thanks!

2020 Apple Silicon MBP vs 2019 16" Intel i9 MBP?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 07:34 PM PST

With benchmarks released, which would you recommend? :) My usage for a MBP is for Adobe-related softwares such as AfterEffects, PremierePro & Photoshop.

    Here's the comparison currently:
    Apple Silicon 13" MBP - 16GB Ram, 500GB SSD
    2019 16" MBP - intel i9, 1TB SSD, 32GB Ram, AMD Radeon 5500M

How easy is it to add and the remove other user accounts, so that when I leave everything under my name is completely deleted? I'm new to mac after being a windows user most my life. I did a bit of research and...

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 06:53 PM PST

It seems that when you remove a user all the information stays unless you delete some folder. Not sure which one, my question is, will apps be deleted or is that something I must do myself? Is there a way to make it as if I was never a user? I wanna have my icloud account there for a while mostly for easy doc transfer and stuff. I mostly plan to use the Affinity Suite and light coding (I'm just learning).

    Any info is appreciated!

    Should I upgrade?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 06:49 PM PST

Hi guys. I've bought MacBook Air (Early 2020 i5) in May and after watching few reviews about new M1 chip I've started to thinking about upgrade. But is it worth it? I usually use my MacBook for simple tasks like browsing the web or watching movies on Netflix that's all. For heavier tasks I have my pc. Thanks for all your help! 😊

    Macbook Air or Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 06:46 PM PST

Hi! I'm torn between the two (or three) and don't know which one to take. I'm deciding between the 16GB Macbook Air (7-Core GPU) or the base model Macbook Pro.

For context, I am a college student majoring in business. I'm currently learning how to do graphic design (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator) so I can start freelancing. I also do some casual everyday photography and would like to edit my photos in Lightroom as well. I also use final cut pro for youtube vlogs, which are typically recorded in 1080p/4K (less than 10 minutes) about 3-4 times a month. I'm planning to hold on to this for at least 4 years, ideally 5-6.

I don't particularly have a budget (my parents are helping me pay for half), but I still want to get the best bang for my buck.

Also, if it helps, I currently have an MBA 2017 model as well as an iPad Air 3.

Any way I can use a Thunder Bolt 3 powered hard drive on a 2015 MacBook with Thunderbolt 2?

    Will 1080p videos/movies look worse on a MacBook with a 2,560 by 1,600 screen ?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:25 PM PST

I assume that the new macbook has a 1600p resolution, but does this mean that everything 1080p will look terrible on the screen ? Because that's what people are saying on other forums about 1440p monitors running 1080p videos, wondering if it's the same for MacBook screens.

    Cheap Upgrade?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:15 PM PST

I was just gifted a MacBook Air 2020 i3 with 8GB RAM. Is it worth the effort to try and sell/trade-in for the new M1 Air?

I got a Mac so I could get used to the Unix environment for coding in Python & C for my classes in bioinformatics. I'm not sure if the ARM architecture would affect how those run (weird bugs/incompatibility?), but I'm confident most old bio programs would have no issue running on Rosetta 2. The better battery life, app compatibility, snappier performance, and potential longevity of the device is intriguing enough for me to consider. What do you all think?

M1 Air- base model for 250 less + 4 year warranty worth it?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:08 PM PST

Hi all, would appreciate opinions on what you would do

In the UK and safe to assume pricing in £=$ with the UK markup

So I have ordered on a deal for a base M1 air from an authorised reseller for £830 with 4 year warranty (not AppleCare).

Like many others, I never saw myself investing in anything less than 16GB RAM this generation, but performance seems to be good so far and this seller doesn't do customisation, so it's base model only. If I wanted 16GB RAM, I'd have to get this from apple with education discount for £1080 so £250 more with no extended warranty.

My use case would be office, citrix to remote log into work network, and I'd like to have the option to do some basic coding in the future for scientific data crunching. I used to occasionally use parallels to VM into windows but rarely enough to give this up. I am still in the return window to give back my MBP 13 10th Gen which I intend to do.

I guess part of me is thinking, although I have historically kept laptops for many years, maybe spending a little less up front for a first gen Apple Silicon model and upgrade earlier may be the way to go. Waiting another year not really an option for me.

What do people think? Stick with the base for the deal or always 16GB?

    Thanks!

M1 Air versus Pro for healthcare professional

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 02:53 PM PST

I was curious which would be best for someone in the healthcare field. I'm a resident physician and use my current MacBook Air (13", early 2014 which I've loved up until now because she's started to get really slow on me) daily either for Zooming into different educational conferences, making endless PowerPoints, going through emails, and logging on remotely to our electronic medical record system (ie. Epic) for charting. Everywhere I read, it says the new M1 MBA should be fine for performing less intensive tasks, but I'm not sure if what I do on a day to day basis is considered intense or not for my MacBook.

Which would you recommend? Could I get away with the MBA or is going the MBP route the safer way? Thanks!
