Are the new macbook pros more powerful than surface books? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 10:15 PM PST Hello, currently I have a windows machine, 13.5 inch surface book 2 (with 1050 ti graphics card) that I purchased last year however, I am thinking about switching to MacOS. I have never used a mac book before but I wanted to make sure that overall, I was getting an upgrade in terms of power? What comparable would you say these new macbook pros are in comparison to a windows laptop CPU/GPU wise. Also any tips or tricks? Thank you! [link] [comments]
8GB vs 16 GB on new Air models? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 01:18 PM PST The performance on the new Air looks beastly, but does it make much of a difference between the 8GB and 16GB versions for a casual user? I'm looking to gift a new MBAir for my wife who is upgrading from a 2015 non-retina Air. She doesn't do much outside Safari, Word, and proprietary software in her profession (medicine). Definitely not a power user. With the M1 chip and all its advantages, is 8GB of RAM enough? Apple is the only retailer who sells it with 16GB, and they don't do discounts. [link] [comments]
Sell 2020 Intel Pro for M1 Air? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 04:58 PM PST I have the Mid 2020 Pro, 16 gb Ram, 512 gb storage. I like it a lot and have no substantive complaints, but it seems I could easily sell it and get an 8 gb/512 gb M1 air and (at worst) break even. I'm a pretty casual user, but with WFH sometimes have to do some minor video editing. Am I an idiot for considering doing this? I definitely don't need the M1, but the better battery, better camera, and power of the M1 make me very, very tempted. TIA! [link] [comments]
Brand new Macbook Pro M1 shutting off whenever unplugged Posted: 20 Nov 2020 11:38 PM PST Hi, I got a brand new Macbook Pro M1 yesterday and today when I was trying to use it, it just randomly shuts off by itself and I am unable to turn it back on unless I plug it back into the charger. Once I unplug it, it immediately shuts off again. Not sure what I should do about this [link] [comments]
Do I qualify for butterfly keyboard replacement? (photos included) Posted: 20 Nov 2020 10:59 PM PST Hi guys! Hope you're all safe during COVID. My Macbook Air's (2018, Retina) keyboard has been acting funky for a while; repeated keys, bulky presses etc and I have been looking to get it replaced through Apple's replacement program, which I understand is free of cost. However, the only service provider in my country has informed me that 'any physical damage' will render my coverage void. The thing is, there are a few dents from two years of heavy use (I use it for school and work so it travels with me a lot). I'm wondering if, realistically, these damages render my Macbook void form coverage? If not, I'll take it abroad with me on my next trip and try some other service providers. Does anyone have the Tech21 13" Macbook Pro Cover from the Apple store? Do you like it? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 10:35 PM PST Looking to buy a case, just wanted to hear people's thoughts. Any other suggestions? [link] [comments]

I’m new to macs so sorry if this is a dumb question...... Posted: 20 Nov 2020 12:46 PM PST I have a MacBook Air. What's the difference between downloading an app from the App Store versus downloading an app from a website. For example, what's the difference if I download Adobe Reader from the Adobe website or from the App Store? Thank you. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Nov 2020 05:12 PM PST Hi guys, So I noticed a few weeks ago that my MacBook Pro 13" 2019 case around the hinge seems to be bent causing the top case to to swell outwards (seems as though it is fracturing the lid around the hinge). Now whilst this is not the end of the world cosmetically, I wanted to find out if anyone has any similar problems. I have already booked the issue with apple support online and am going to book an appointment for after lockdown. I don't recall ever dropping my laptop and for it to be bent this particular way would be very difficult to do from dropping it. It looks as though the hinge is almost misaligned and I don't want this to affect the screen in the long-term. It seems weird how it protrudes upwards but then there is a uniform the moment it gets a bit away from the hinge. Similar thing is also beginning to occur on the other side in terms of the "fracturing" of the top lid I am already thinking about how bad this Mac is wearing, at 9 months I have noticed the past few days my keyboard is now starting to have the Mac "keyboard problem". Thinking about the new M1 chips already. Thanks for any advice on this. [link] [comments]
PSA: Apple Trade-In Values Now Include Early 2020 MBA Posted: 20 Nov 2020 08:20 AM PST Just a heads up, Apple has updated its trade-in program to include values for early 2020 MacBook Airs. In researching a number of third-party resale sites, the values seem pretty comparable. [link] [comments]

Can you exchange a computer after the 15 days original return period has passed? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 06:31 PM PST I'm just wondering since I got a macbook air for school in the month of August, and now I have two major reasons for why I would like the exchange it. First is the really loud fan noise, even when literally only watching a YT video with NOTHING else running and hot temps in general. Also, it's because I had gotten the i5, which added 150$ to the base cost, but now the new mac's base model is way better than the one I have in all performance aspects, and is also fan-less, so that would solve the fan issue completely. Should I just be upfront with Apple support and tell them these are the reasons I want to exchange it, but emphasizing on the fan issue? [link] [comments]

READING NTFS external drive on M1 MacBook Pro Posted: 20 Nov 2020 06:24 PM PST Just transferred from a windows PC. Do you know when there will be an update or an app that can read/write NTFS for the new M1 MacBook? My previous 13" MacBook with an intel processor can run an NTFS reader program fine but on my M1 the extension can't be read/written to the drive. [link] [comments]
Purchased a MacBook Pro M1, but never realized you can only plug it up to a single external display Posted: 20 Nov 2020 05:50 PM PST I use two external 27" 4k monitors on a daily basis. I was thinking of sending the M1 back, but also considering changing the 27" 4k monitors into an ultra wide monitor. Does anyone have any recommendations? What kind of resolution / size would I be roughly looking for to have the same real estate? [link] [comments]
Should I sell my High-end gaming PC and get a new MacBook air? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 05:30 PM PST I want to sell my gaming PC and get a new base MacBook Air M1. Because I only watch youtube and do some light work on it and don't play any competitive games anymore. I would also get a PS5 along with it for some casual gaming. [link] [comments]
Question about replacing 2012 MBP 9.1 optical drive with HDD Posted: 20 Nov 2020 05:26 PM PST I've been upgrading all I can on a secondhand MBP 2012 I purchased a few days ago. So far I've swapped the 1TB HDD (a 5400RPM Seagate drive) with a 1TB SSD, doubled the RAM to 16GB, and installed Big Sur. I'm very pleased with everything so far, and especially with the ease with which this model can be upgraded. I was honestly expecting even those two minor upgrades to be a major headache (and I'm not the most delicate with electronics; I can build computers without any problem, but I've killed a few PSPs and DS Lites by accidentally breaking components off the motherboard during repair or re-shelling), but I was pleasantly surprised to find this model very easy to upgrade. One of the only other upgrades I'm interested in is swapping the optical drive for an SSD or HDD, not so much for the additional storage space (I house my music collection and the majority of the files I need for work on a Windows desktop), but to do away with the sound of the drive initializing when the laptop boots. I didn't realize how little I've heard that sound over the last decade or so, but now it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. I've read that this model of MBP is better with a SATA II drive in the optical drive bay adapter than a SATA III drive, because SATA III drives will be read at SATA I speeds for some reason. I don't have a 2.5" SATA II drive lying around, and I haven't decided whether it's worth buying a 1TB HDD for $50 for that adapter. I see SSDs recommended for that location a lot, but I don't know how that would be economical given SATA II SSDs never decreased in price at higher capacities due to the outdated interface. I guess my question is whether using a SATA III drive at SATA I speeds for file storage is going to be incredibly noticeable in day-to-day usage. If not, I'll just order the adapter kit and throw the original Seagate drive in there for however long it lasts (I have no idea how used and abused it was by the previous owners, as I'm at least the third owner of this MBP), maybe to use to store files I want to access in Windows via Bootcamp. Posted: 20 Nov 2020 09:37 AM PST Hey guys, I'm software developer and a first time mac buyer. My new MB Pro 16 just arrived today. It took for ever to ship so I made the decision to buy it before the apple event. So now I'm wondering if I should actually return this MB pro and wait for the new one to come. Im working with a few different technologies, for example Python, C++ but mostly I'm working on web development. I'd love to hear some options! [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Nov 2020 11:09 AM PST Hi, I just got a great deal on Amazon UK with a Macbook Pro 13" (10th gen) which was in "Used - Like new" condition for only $1550 (£1180) down from $2600(£2000). I am not sure whether to: a) keep this Macbook Pro 13" in mint condition OR b) buy a new M1 Macbook Air with 16GB RAM on education pricing for £1080. Obviously the Pro has 1TB vs 256GB of storage on the Air and Intel is a bit more mature, but which do you think is a better buy? The Amazon warehouse model has around 9 more months of warranty. Also I work as a software developer so M1 is a no-go for me right now due to all the software issue, though I still have a reliable early 2015 13" 8gb RAM MacBook Pro. [link] [comments]
Updating older MacBook Air - Worth it? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 04:29 PM PST Hey guys, My girlfriend is currently in university and uses a MacBook Air from 2014. She doesn't do any heavy work or use it very hard but she has been complaining about it slowing down lately. The battery doesn't hold a charge so it has to be plugged in all the time, and I figure I can handle the task of changing the battery - It's the slowness that I'm unsure about. I'm not a huge apple person (actually got my first MacBook today) and I wanted to address some of the issues she's having. I realize that older technology will be slower, especially something that's 6 years old, but if she can hold out until I can surprise her with a new one that would be perfect. Since it never leaves her desk, I'm thinking an external SSD might help out with speed since she has a ton of photos and stuff on her hard drive might help, as well as an update to the Mac OS. She's still running Yosemite. I've heard Big Sur could possibly be a problem and brick the machine, so I'm not sure if that's the route to go. Can you still get Catalina? What would be the best plan of action here? TIA [link] [comments]
How to look after the butterfly keyboard of 2019 MacBook Pro 15"? Posted: 20 Nov 2020 04:14 PM PST I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro 2019, with the butterfly keyboard, which tends to break over time. What can / should I do to prevent that? [link] [comments] |
