    In a world where proper Unicode and UTF-8 support is and should be the norm, you wouldn't think that you still run into these encoding issues, especially on such high levels.
    But here we are.

    Whenever you create a file/directory with an umlaut or other accented character in its filename on HFS+ (or with Finder on any file system) the character get's converted into its "fully decomposed UTF-8 form"

    What this means?
    Suppose you enter a file's name in Finder and press the Ä key on your keyboard (if you have one) aka. U+00C4 or "LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A WITH DIAERESIS". This happens quite often when you're for example German.
    When you're done editing, the filename you just entered won't actually have the Ä encoded as U+00C4 but actually as U+0041 U+0308 (the normal A plus "COMBINING DIAERESIS").
    So if you now were to copy this filename again, it wouldn't actually match what you initially typed in!
    And this is always the case in Finder, regardless of what file system you're in.

    I realize that this is probably pretty irrelevant for most users, but IMO you should definitely be aware of this if you're regularly dealing with files, that have non-ASCII names.

    In case you're wondering: I'm posting this now because this behaviour recently fucked me over again and I thought I had to warn some of you.

    Because apparently SMB network shares don't deal well with these "decomposed forms" for whatever reason (at least the one from my Synology NAS). You'll get phantom files that cannot be opened in any way nor deleted.
    Now that usually isn't a problem, because Finder (or probably the OS's mounting configuration) actually renames all files, which include these decomposed graphemes, back to their original "normal" (i.e. single-byte encoded) form, so everything works fine.
    But in my case I wasn't using Finder or the mounted share, I was copying the files directly to my NAS with rsync over ssh, which of course doesn't perform this renaming per default. For this rename to happen you'll need the --iconv=utf-8-mac,utf-8 option on rsync … which OF COURSE isn't available in the old-ass version 2.6.9 that ships with macOS, so you have to compile the newest version yourself or get it from brew!

    Mac OS - Partitions Issue

    I using my Mac now for two Years and I like it but I'm still having a hard time with Finder. Some of my Folders looks like this and some like this. Is there some kind of Automatic Scaling for the Finder Folders and Files? Sometimes I have to scroll to the right.. or there are blank Spots. Thanks

    Xcode 12.1 stuck on installing

    Has anyone run into issues updating code through the Appstore? Every time I try it hangs on installing at 99%. Restarting the App Store and my Mac doesn't seem to resolve it and I can't find any other trouble shooting steps from google other than just re-installing Xcode.

    Safari bug: Removing a frequently visited icon from the Safari tray removes everything from the tray, until I restart Safari.

    Mac user storage doesn’t add up to what it says it’s occupying. After some digging I found out the main user was taking up 84GB of storage, but if I add up the space been taken up by all its sub folders it’s barely 15GB. What could be causing this and how could I fix it?

    Apple Watch won't pair to Mac.

    I've had an Apple Watch Series 3 for almost 3 months now. When I first set it up, I had no issues pairing it to my Macbook Air (2017). I received my new iPhone 12 yesterday, after upgrading from the 8. I decided to set it up as a new phone, and unpaired my watch with my 8, before pairing it with my 12. If it's worth mentioning, I *think* it has been set up as a new watch, as I had to change the faces and install some of my non original watch apps. Except now it won't unlock my Mac. At all. After several resets and restarting my Mac about 400 times, it just says 'Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch'.

    I've fiddled with all of the buttons the guides usually suggest, turning Handoff on and off on all three devices and making sure 'unlock with iphone' is not turned on on my phone. Interestingly, when I restart, at log in it states 'passcode must be entered for Apple Watch to unlock Mac' or words to that effect. The watch button is also not checked when I view it in the settings. I would assume maybe I need to manually delete the Watch from my Macbook before I can add this one (like it's a brand new watch) but honestly, I have no idea how I would even be able to do that, let alone if it would work. Any advice would be helpful; thank you!

    Another note: I haven't erased my iPhone 8 yet to completely disconnect it (as my previous number hasn't changed over to my new sim yet, and just in case somebody contacts me, and to use my old number for iMessage), but I deleted the Watch App from my 8 after unpairing.

    Macbook pro stuck in constant reboot loop

    My macbook keeps going into the software update screen but it'll get stuck at 100% for a long time before it encounters the kernel black screen and then reboots itself. I've tried resetting the NVRAM and that didn't work. I've tried entering safe boot by holding down shift but it always goes to the software update first. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    iCloud file sharing showing my full name

    Hello, I'm trying to use my iCloud to share a pdf publicly and when you follow the link it shows my full name. OneDrive just brings you to a page with the file. Is there an option I can change to not give out my full name with each public link?

    Has anyone been experiencing issues with Photos?

    My Photos on macbook air early 2015 has about 5GB worth of photos. Before the update to Catalina 10.15.7, it was running smoothly. But now, it has been very laggy. It often crashes. I'll be editing photis and it's taking a long time switching from crop to adjust.

    Is this because of the update?

    MacOS Big Sur

I know some apps don't actually exist on the Mac such as the phone app. I was wondering if anyone would be able to share the following apps with me in the style, Phone, weather, clock.     Can anyone who has a lower version of facebook messenger on macOS compile it and send it for me please?

    The new facebook messenger update that was rolled out earlier this week with a design change doesn't work at all on my old macbook. It basically just shows a solid white window upon opening.

    If someone has messenger on a version prior to 73.x.x I'd really appreciate it if you can compile it from the applications folder and send it for me.

    Shutting Down

    Hello,
    My university was able to get us grad students a macbook pro 13.3. Looking through the spec sheet it is of early 2020. This is my first mac ever owned/used. I have question when it comes to turning off or shutting down. When i go to apple >shut down... , does it actually shut down or does it go into this sleep mode. I clicked shut down last night and when I opened the fold, it brought me to the login screen without showing the apple logo. Is that how shut down works vs windows? Is there a way to actually make it shut down?

    Question: Macbook display

    So I had closed my macbook and left it for a while and when I returned to it and opened it I was met with static displaying for a second or so, itt's gone and I haven't had any trouble with it.

    Anyone had this issue before and any cause for concern lmk.

    Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Dock Issue

    Hi everyone! I just bought the Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Dock (Not Pro). From my understanding, I should be able to use 2 4k displays. I have x2 21.5" LG Ultrafine monitors. On the back of the dock, I plugged one of the Thunderbolt to laptop, and the other to my 1st monitor. That works just fine for me. My second monitor, I bought a DP to USB C and plugged that DP into the dock and the USB C to the 2nd monitor but it doesn't seem to work. Any recommendations or should I return the dock and go with something else?

    Best way to use iMac as 2nd monitor with MBP

    Hey everyone. I work as digital marketing specialist, finding myself constantly in need for more screen real estate to see as much as possible simultaneously. My set up is my MBP with a 2nd monitor, in addition I have a separate iMac (company's) trying to look into the best way to add it as a third monitor. Tried screen sharing and remote control built in to MacOS but the closest I got is to control my iMac's screen through the screen share app. Suggestion as to how to use the iMac as MBP's display extension?

    Problem with tags in a file dialog

    Hello everyone.

    I'd like to ask you for help. I noticed the problem a long time ago, basically right after I started using macOS, and decided to reach out for help just now, finally.

    Some of my folders in Finder are labeled with tags. When I click on a tag in the left menubar, the labeled folders show up. That works well.

    But when I am uploading a file to a website in a browser, the file dialog appears and I click on a label in the menubar, it's empty. No folders show up. The problem occurs with all the tags. I've tried different browsers, it never works. In another macOS app, such a mail client Spark, it works, though.

    Does anyone have tips on what's going on?

    Safari Crash/Reload with Netflix on MBP 2020 Intel 10th Gen

    As the title says. I'm on the latest official OS:X and the latest Safari. Apple support says this is the first they've heard of it... doubtful. Works fine on other browsers but looks bad with the lower HD resolution. FHD requires Safari.

    [Preview] - Zoom in and out in Preview in smaller increments

    Essentially I am trying to figure out a way to zoom in and out in smaller increments than the default settings in Preview when viewing an image.

    There's an old tech note from 2004 saying this is possible but I am not seeing this working. Can anyone confirm if there is a way to zoom in and out in smaller increments? I am on Catalina.

    If you hold down the Option key while zooming in/out in Preview (using the toolbar buttons), then it zooms in/out in smaller increments than it does using the buttons alone -- nifty!
