Why did Apple discontinue upgradable ram?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 08:28 PM PDT

I'm about to buy the pro 17 2020 and almost bought the 16gb before I found out ram can't be upgraded. Punch to the gut because it costs $800 for 64gb whereas the same spec'd ram is $200 anywhere else.

Anyone know if there's a legitimate design logic behind why they did this? Or is it just engineered to make more profit?

    Touch bar got any better?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 03:27 PM PDT

I've decided to skip the first ARM based models and about to preorder latest 13'' pro refresh. My only problem with it is the touch bar; I just don't like the way it looks. I'm aware that the Air doesn't have one, but its performance isn't quite enough for me.

Ever since the touch bar was introduced, didn't seem like anything more than a gimmick to me. Judging by the latest leaks, doesn't seem like it will be going away anytime soon. As of now, does it feel any more relevant? Coming from a mid 2015 15'' model, I'm really gonna miss my top row. btw first time posting anything on reddit lol

My MacBook Air 2015’s S keycap is only snapping back in on one side and when you touch it from the snapped in side it lifts up on the opposite side.

Say that they'll announce the ARM Macbook with Apple Silicon on Nov 17th, when would be the date where we can actually buy it?

Does anyone ever have the thought that why Apple doesn't make a photo editing app?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 12:51 AM PDT

We have video and audio editing apps and iWork suite. Is it so hard to make or Apple just thinks it is unnecessary to have a photo editing app by their own.

And what I am asking about is a kinda professional photo editing app like Photoshop and Affinity Photo.

I dropped my MacBook Pro charger.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:15 AM PDT

I have been checking all over google for an answer but I haven't seen one so I think it's time to ask the community myself.

I dropped the charger it is a 96W or an 85W charger, bending the plugs in the process. It was quite the fall, it rolled around and everything. I would say it was from 1.5 meters. I have since used the charger, straightened the plugs.

    My question is:

Is there a way to see if the charger is damaged or not? I'd prefer a way without taking it to Apple Care, although I have a limited warranty still. Would it be better to take the charger to Apple? Get a multimeter and check it myself? I am worried about voltage fluctuations, overvoltage, or any other problem it might cause to the battery.

    Thanks, guys.

Can't print double-sided on my Macbook Pro

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:50 AM PDT

I recently got a MacBook Pro 2020 13" and I have connected my HP Deskjet 2134 printer to it via a USB cable and have installed the necessary drivers. However, for some reason when I go onto the options when printing on Word, Acrobat, etc. there is an option to print double-sided but I can't seem to enable it as the checkbox is not there.

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

Do you recommend rigid cases for my macbook?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:56 AM PDT

Ever since I got it I've been considering it. So far I've only bought a carrying bag but idk if I should get the rigid case. I take really good care of it so I've never dropped it and hopefully I wont. Are they really worth it? I was thinking of getting maybe just a keyboard thingy to protect it and a screen protector as well. I'd appreciate any tips!

    Be careful of Mac Outpost!

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 05:57 AM PDT

Last month, my MacBook Pro 13 inch touch bar USB c ports all failed. My laptop no longer charged and eventually died. Due to the pandemic, apple store appointments weren't available, so I took it to Mac outpost. They charged me 140$ to do diagnostics. One month later I got a call saying I need to replace the ports (total of 350$) but I may also need a logic board replacement that may lead to an overall charge of 1300$. They said they see liquid damage indicators (never spilled anything on it, probably humidity caused them to go red).

I obviously refused to fix it, ate up the 140$ diagnostic and took it home. I used compressed air as one reditor suggested, it worked! I then noticed there was an available apple appointment at Genius Bar and I took it there. They ran hardware diagnostics and confirmed all components (logic board, can, ports) were in good condition. They said the issue I had was likely due to the pram, they reset it and my laptop never had that issue again.

Moral of the story: don't go to Mac outpost unless it's the absolute last resort. I hope not all stores are like this but it seemed like they wanted to do unnecessary repairs on a perfectly functioning laptop that needed a software reset.

For reference, I'm located in Ontario, Canada

Crunching noise when I close my MacBook Pro 13" 2020

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:39 AM PDT

A few days ago I noticed a crunching noise coming from the hinge of my MacBook. It sounds like some dust grinding inside of the hinge mechanism. I tried blowing on it with compressed air, but it didn't help.

I can only hear the noise when closing the MacBook, never when opening it. It can be heard better if I'm closing it slower.

Did this occur to anyone else? Any suggestions to fixing it myself, so I don't have to take it to a repair shop for a full cleaning service?

My Pro (2020 13inch 2.3GHz quad-core Intel core i7, 32gb memory) is making this low humming/squeaky noise. It is a bit more noticeable on the video [sound up to hear] and isn't very loud. But whenever I notice it, it is quite annoying. Any ideas what is causing it? The laptop is only 3 months old.

is it even worth upgrading ???

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:50 AM PDT

    I have a mid- 2015, 13 inch macbook pro w/ retina display that I got whenever I was 15.

I'm 20 now, currently in college, and all I really use this for is for light internet browsing (youtube & social media), zoom calls, and working on assignments (usually just word documents).

I have noticed that the battery condition says 'replace soon' and charge isn't as long lasting as it was when I first got it. It sometimes overheats, sound quality is poor (which i don't mind since i use headphones/connect to a bluetooth speaker anyways), & occasionally makes a light clicking sound, but nothing too bothersome.

All in all it is still pretty fast so is it valid to just not upgrade for a few more years? I see stuff about how you need to upgrade every so often, but is that really necessary? I feel like all of these things are minor, but i'm not sure if i'll be fine or if this is foreshadowing my mac dying soon. hopefully it's not the ladder.

Coconut battery shows negative battery age?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:27 AM PDT

I did a battery swap on my mom's laptop air, and now everything (finally) seems to be up and running except coconut battery is telling me the battery has negative age. Is that something to be concerned about? Is that a sign of a shitty battery that was recycled and made to look nice and new?

The cycle count is showing 1.

    Fingerprint not working

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:33 AM PDT

Hi I recently had to restore my macbook to let a friend borrow and now I have it back and restored everything. I am having a few issues I am not sure if they are a result of the restore. I cannot add a fingerprint to my account. When I go to settings and click on Touch ID and then click on "add fingerprint", it prompts me to put my password in which I do. But next screen I get an error right away stating " Failed, Unable to complete touch ID enrollment, Please go back and try again" Ive tried restarting, turning off/on - its been like this a few weeks now.

HELP DECIDING ON A 16 in

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 08:19 AM PDT

In terms of music production - using Ableton and several other VST's

Would a 16 in with 16 gb's of ram suffice in the long run? Or is it wiser to just shell out the extra for the 32 gb

Currently working on a 2010 mbp with 8 gb of ram

Prevent Keyboard streak marks on new MacBook Pro 16''

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 04:17 AM PDT

I got a brand new MacBook Pro 16" from my office, in all it's screen real estate glory, to use for remote work. I would be travelling a lot. How can I prevent keyboard marks on the screen. My previous 13" 2017 one was so bad by the end that I had to turn up the brightness to see the screen sometimes. Admittedly I did not know how to take care of these, so that one went through a lot of abuse. I am now working in UI and Design, so I need to keep the screen of this one in good condition. Also, if we are assigned the device for 3 years, then we get to keep it. So I would like to maintain it for some time (In case I want to gift it to someone later).

Any Links for products in India?
