Big Sur Beta 9: iOS/iPadOS Software Update Progress Bar on Finder

Don't know if this is new, but the Finder finally shows a progress bar when downloading Software Updates / Restores for iOS/iPadOS.

Took them a year, but it's finally here.

Does your trackpad’s pinch-to-zoom feature randomly stop working until you reset in Settings?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 02:30 AM PDT

This has been driving me nuts since I upgraded my MacBook Pro to High Sierra. Pinch-to-zoom would stop working in the middle of my workflow and only resetting it in Settings>Trackpad would get it working again—until it did it again! I honestly thought it was a hardware issue until today.

Anyway, I figured out the culprit: the popular window management app Magnet! I uninstalled it to give a similar app a try...and lo and behold the problem disappeared. I reinstalled it and immediately the problem resumed.

I emailed the dev and he says that he's been trying to find the cause of the bug for ages with no luck.

    Just thought I'd share!

Is it just me or Google Docs and Sheets are a bit buggy with Safari?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 06:57 PM PDT

Ever since I got my MacBook Pro a few months ago and began using Safari, I noticed that Google Docs is buggy (e.g., bottom parts of pages are cut off) as well as Google Sheets (e.g., copying highlighted text in a cell gets deleted). All these issues never existed in either Google Chrome or Edge.

While I use Edge when plugged in, I try to use exclusively Safari when on battery since I believe Safari has the best battery optimization in MacBook. However, even today with the latest Safari 14, Google Docs and Sheets still have the same bugs (btw I'm in latest macOS Catalina). Anyone experiencing the same issues?

[HELP] I have just erased my disk and reboot the system due to new Catalina update. However, I realized there is a thing as "other volumes in container" in memory.. What is that and how can I get rid of this? I have 2016 MacBook Pro, 256 GB and as you can see it takes up 55 GB of the space.

How do I disable control + Left Click but leave the control key rebindable

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:25 PM PDT

Pretty self explanatory. Pressing control and left click simultaneously right clicks, but I have a two button mouse already. Is it possible to disable that specific keybind while not entirely disabling the control key? I've tried Karabiner and I can't figure that out, is there maybe a file I can edit?

Restoring mail after Big Sur took a Big Dump

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:42 PM PDT

Ok, my drive is no longer bootable. I have backups but restoring mail always requires importing again.

Shouldn't I be able to copy my ~/library/mail folder from my non-bootable old drive over to my bootable drive with the associated pref file and mail simply start again as if nothing happened? Sure, it'll have to download the new messages, but it keeps wanting to do an import. Any way to avoid the import step?

CLIPBOARD CONTENTS TO DIALOG BOX WORKAROUND NEEDED THX!

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 06:17 PM PDT

LOT OF TIMES woops I've got an image on the clipboard (cmd, ctl, shift 4) and

I get onto a page that wants me to select an image FILE from my hard drive.

Other than going back and cmd-shift-4 and saving it as a file, is there any way to paste from clipboard to file or re-direct a dialog box toward what's on the clipboard?

Stupid request, but I make this mistake frequently. Thanks!

Automated Workaround for bad AirPod Sound Quality on MacOS

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:58 AM PDT

So I found an automated workaround for the bad AirPod Sound Quality on MacOS and wanted to share. For those unaware, when you connect your AirPods to your Mac, the default microphone will automatically switch to the AirPods microphone. Once the microphone changes to the AirPods mic, for some reason the channel for the AirPods output is switched from a 2 ch 32-bit format to a 1 ch 16-bit format and they sound god awful. To get around this you have to switch the input source from the AirPod mic to something else (like the built-in mic) and the AirPods output will switch back to the 2 ch 32-bit format. Now for the workaround:

    1. Install Hammerspoon (http://www.hammerspoon.org/)
    2. Once installed, click on the icon on the menu bar and click "Open Config"
    3. Put the following into the config file and save it:

    -- Avoid automatically setting a bluetooth audio input device lastSetDeviceTime = os.time() lastInputDevice = nil function audioDeviceChanged(arg) if arg == 'dev#' or arg == 'dOut' then lastSetDeviceTime = os.time() elseif arg == 'dIn ' and os.time() - lastSetDeviceTime < 2 then inputDevice = hs.audiodevice.defaultInputDevice() if inputDevice:transportType() == 'Bluetooth' then internalMic = lastInputDevice or hs.audiodevice.findInputByName('Built-in Microphone') internalMic:setDefaultInputDevice() end end if hs.audiodevice.defaultInputDevice():transportType() ~= 'Bluetooth' then lastInputDevice = hs.audiodevice.defaultInputDevice() end end hs.audiodevice.watcher.setCallback(audioDeviceChanged) hs.audiodevice.watcher.start()
    1. Click the icon again and click "Reload Config"

Now when you connect your AirPods to your Mac, it will automatically switch the microphone from the AirPods to the built-in mic. If you have something like a webcam that is set as the default input source, it will not change it to the built-in mic, it will stay the webcam or whatever else you might have set. You can change it back to the AirPods mic in the settings or using Audio MIDI and it won't change it back to the built-in as this only runs when you connect to the Mac.

NOTE: I did not come up with this workaround. I found it on an obscure blog post last week and can't find the link to provide for the source. I greatly appreciate the person that came up with this as it has definitely been a massive help.

How to minimize SOME apps into app icon?

How to minimize SOME apps into app icon?

    Hey guys,

I'm new to Macs and Reddit and this is my first post. I hope this is the right sub 😊I'm running OS Catalina. Does anyone know if it is possible to enable the setting that minimizes open windows into the app icon, but only for some apps? For example, because I only ever have one Spotify window open at once, I'd like it to minimize into the app icon. With Chrome on the other hand, since I have a bunch of windows open at a time, it would be convenient if those windows could minimize separately. I don't want Spotify minimized on the right side of the dock with my open Chrome and Word windows because it shrinks my dock even smaller than it already is.

I'm sure there's no way to split up which applications minimize into app icons in System Preferences, but maybe one of you knows of a crafty app that does that? I've found awesome apps for similar kinds of things but have had no luck with this.

This setting, but for some apps

Brand New MacBook 2020, Wifi Issue?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:58 PM PDT

So I just got and fired up a brand new 2020 MacBook Pro. My house features a dual-stream wifi network at 2.4GHz and 5GHz. While I can connect to the 2.4GHz, I cannot connect to the 5GHz; in fact, it won't show up at all! There is no workaround have been able to find.

For context, I am running macOS Catalina, 10.15.5.

    Thank you!

iCloud photos syncing on MacBook Air?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:03 PM PDT

Got a new MacBook Air last Friday. It has been on, and plugged in since then, as I assumed it had to be that way to pull my fairly large iCloud Photo Library from iCloud. By Monday it had moved by 1 file, today it has downloaded about 5k of 21,000 photos and videos. I have gigabit, but know apple limits throughput...is there a status my computer has to be in for it to pull them? On and me actively using it? Lid opened screen on? Or is it not that complex and just takes what it takes?

I'm contemplating going back to syncing it manually as that way I always knew exactly where I was at, BUT Catalina and iOS 13 couldn't manually sync (broke every time) so am not even sure if that works now.

    Thanks r/Macos!

Hotkey for switching focus to specific apps? (iterm2 related, but general instructions should work)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:42 AM PDT

SOLVED -- Wanted to put the solution here because it took me a bit to figure it out.

    1. Open Automator create a new "Quick Action" (if you're looking at docs that say "Service", this appears to just be a name change around 10.6).
    2. Select "no input" from any application in the new window
    3. From the left-hand side, select run Applescript*1
    4. Type in your Applescript, an example of mine was: tell application "iTerm" activate end tell
    5. Save your automation.
    6. Go to privacy and security and add automator onto the approved accessibility list
    7. Go into keyboard shortcuts and navigate to services, your automator action should be there I believe under general.
    8. Enable the action and select a hotkey.*2
    9. Profit!

*1: Many references I started with set me about converting my Applescript into an application. While I would ideally like to do this, I simply was unable to get it to work this way. If anyone knows how please let me know.

2: There are very few system-wide keyboard shortcuts that aren't already in use, and there's not really any good feedback to let you know if you're using one that's already in use besides things not really working. I would recommend a shift+option+command modifier plus a key. *DO NOT USE THE CONTROL KEY AS A MODIFIER** This is a trap I fell into because it turns out that anytime Applescript is executed with the control key held down, it will automatically show the startup options (which is not what you want for this to work).

I hope that was relatively clear and hopes anyone who stumbles upon this same problem. Thanks guys.

    Original:

Hey all, just looking for some advice if I can increase my efficiency a bit here.

I am a bit of a power user with a pretty consistent workflow, and there is one app that comes into the mix for me all of the time alongside whatever else I'm doing.

Is there a way for be to configure a global hotkey that will switch focus to this app so long as it is running, regardless of its workspace or screen presence?

For background, the app I want to configure this for is iterm2. I have many hotkeys focused around iterm2 and they work great. The issue is that once I lose focus on the iterm2 application itself by engaging another app, I cannot immediately make use of most of the iterm2 app hotkeys without first doing something else to tell the OS I want to be focused on iterm2 again.

I am able to switch focus between apps generally in macOS using command+tab(+shift) or swiping upwards and selecting explicitly, but hopefully you can see from the above I'm just looking for a more efficient way to do this.

    Thanks for any advice!

    EDIT: Typos

EDIT: added what worked for me

    Naming spaces window

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:47 PM PDT

I'm a student juggling 6 courses, and I like to try and keep every course in it's own window, but I have trouble keeping track of which window is for what. My current solution is to use stickies and pin a note in the bottom corner of each window, but I don't like this solution for a variety of reasons.

Does anyone know of an extension for MacOS that helps you organize your Spaces Windows?

Disable password prompt when apps update

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:31 AM PDT

Several of my non Apple Store apps will prompt for a system password every time they need to update. This is especially annoying because it also doesn't allow me to confirm with biometrics, or my Apple Watch. Is it possible to relax this over zealous security feature?

    Macbook Pro SSD mid 2012

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 07:36 AM PDT

I upgraded to a 500GB SSD. Should I have upgraded to a 1TB SSD? I dont store much on it just wondering if it helps to have the 1TB over the 500GB SSD. Difference in price as about 30 bucks.

    Thoughts?
