My phone is exhibiting very weird behaviour. When I woke up this morning it was boiling hot and some UN webpage has used over 25hrs of screen time in the last 2 days. I’ve never opened that website before. I think it might be hacked

I got this wallpaper after restarting the phone! Was using the default iOS 13 wallpaper. Anyone know if it's some kinda unreleased wallpaper?

Trying to find the best iOS mail app for iPad and iPhone

Recently I went on a bit of a journey to find "the best" iOS email program. Rather than just download a bunch of apps and decide which one I liked, I thought I'd make a post here and send it to each developer so they could see what I did or didn't like about their apps. Hope it's useful to someone!

    https://preview.redd.it/r71fsjptuhk51.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88295b0bd9a6c6f2612c956f74bb28f1c5fa063f

I was prompted by my frustration with the Gmail app for iOS. Although the Gmail app developers finally got off their stool and started supporting split-screen and slide-over (two incredibly important things for iPad users), something that took them five years to finally support, the main frustration with Gmail is that it always opens HTML links in a "sandboxed" environment, to keep me from leaving the Gmail app, rather than kicking me over to Safari or Chrome depending on my setting. (Yes, you can choose which browser in Gmail's settings, but it always opens an in-browser sandboxed instance of the browser you choose.) Gee, I love having to log in to every website in order to access some information!

If anyone at Google is reading this, you've got a LOT of problems with your iOS apps. In addition to having to delete the YouTube app to access the iOS 14 picture-in-picture mode, which works fantastically when I'm using it through regular Safari on both iPhones and iPads, I have also deleted the Gmail app. I'm a huge fan of Google services yet I've deleted your two most important apps from my devices this week. I think you need to take your iOS users more seriously?

YouTuber Rene Richie has a rant about the things Google needs to fix on iOS here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNr-gETHQNw&t=666s if anyone at Google is interested at improving the experience your users.

Actually there's not a single thing wrong with Apple Mail. It's functional, supports all the features you'd expect like dark mode and multitasking, and works great with Gmail and any other mail provider. But somehow I just want something...more. It's like eating white bread with nothing on it.

    https://preview.redd.it/9apf9io6vhk51.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44b3fcbb073aff196e0d3870be876961a0d764ad

The first program I downloaded was Airmail. It's super great, with lots of innovations, a huge amount of customization (including the ability to set slide actions to archive, delete, mark as spam, mark as unread, or star). Like all the apps I tried, it supported unified mailbox and dark mode and had the ability to set pretty much any setting I could want, and settings are synced across different devices. I especially like the use of visual avatars so I can see who the mail is coming from if they're in my contacts. I liked how many ways you could set up options for how to manage your mail flow, and that an iPhone and iPad will sync those options automatically.

    https://preview.redd.it/amqgb07bvhk51.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80c046be9bf382d3143aeaf3e4b38056b4d702cb

The issue with Airmail is its HTML rendering engine is a basket case on the iPad. Many HTML emails displayed so poorly I had to switch to another device to use them. The staff was helpful, asking me to clear some cache or other, but clearly HTML rendering is a challenge for the iPad version of this email program. (The iPhone version did much better at HTML display.) I also didn't like the huge icons sitting in the middle of the bottom of my screen, and I wished the app supported the standard "search bar at the top of the mailbox" when searching for emails, rather than the magnifying glass icon.

Airmail is a subscription model, but $9.99 per year is pretty reasonable. There's also a Mac version and access is included in this price.

Another highly-regarded email app, it has all the bells and whistles. I found its HTML rendering was flawless, somehow looking better than Apple Mail. Dark mode is a challenge for automatic conversion of HTML, and where Airmail just ignored the content of the mails if you were in dark mode, placing it inside a white box, Edison elegantly converted the HTML content of emails so that looked more or less natural in dark mode. "Starred" emails are called "Flagged" in Edison.

    https://preview.redd.it/vg1i9oalvhk51.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63ab381ac077fddc117e9ce5f5c016bd45e4cc23

In the end I didn't like Edison enough to keep with it. Things seemed too vanilla, without the pleasant avatars beside the emails that Airmail and Spark (below) offered. There is an "assistant" option to track certain kinds of email but it seemed hard to use. Edison is free, but they seem to sell some parts of your data with your personal info removed. There is also a $99/year version with extra features like verify sender and block spam which are probably not needed if you're using Gmail with it.

    https://preview.redd.it/dpeqdpkqvhk51.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a54ac0e77f4d2c5109ff729e063ce58476ce85d

Then there was Spark, another well-regarded email app for iOS. Everything is well put-together in this app, with good HTML rendering, visual avatars for your senders, a nice little toolbar at the bottom (when used on an iPad) you can collapse and edit the contents of. Other than referring to "starred" emails as "pins" and also not supporting the Apple Mail-style search bar at the top of a mailbox, I had the least issues with this program, and will continue to use it.

Spark has some additional features like a calendar built-in, which has a Fantastical-style ability to naturally interpret calendar events like "call John at 6:30 pm tomorrow" and it will fill in the right time, although it's not quite as smart as Fantastical, which can parse just about text you throw at it. Like Edison, Spark translated normal mails into dark mode more elegantly, too.

Spark is free you're part of a large team working together closely, there are Premium and Enterprise tiers. The paid tiers add 10 gb of cloud storage, multiple collaborators, and other features that make it almost a Slack competitor. But the free version doesn't have any serious limitations.

Is there a way to copy/paste iOS Notes tables into Excel?

I have a table inside a Note and wish to copy it to an Excel file. Normal copypasting doesn't seem to work. Anyone knows a workaround? Thanks

    Bulk iMessage software

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:27 AM PDT

Do you know a bulk messaging provider for iMessages? We are looking for ways to send personalized newsletters through iMessage without using the standard messaging interface.

Since all our recipients use iPhones, we try to avoid bulk SMS services.

I have already found Reach (iOS App), Hit Em Up (iOS App) & Porterhouse (Mac App), but they seem to be quite unstable.

Also, Shortcuts would allow us to set up a flow, but we would have to go back to the standard interface again.

Are there any best practices for mass sending of iMessages? Curious about your findings!

Install to a Folder would be great

I just downloaded a bunch of Apple Arcade games and then had to drag each one to my Apple Arcade folder on my home screen. It'd be great to have a feature that lets you install an app straight into a folder, especially on iPadOS.

TIL that you can turn Dark Mode, Night Shift and True Tone on or off via the brightness bar in the Control Panel.

Why is it that in 2020 autocorrect is so terrible?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 10:36 AM PDT

I'm not even talking about the common complaints about curse words being sanitized (although that's annoying too). I'm referring to basic words often being changed to words that are completely out of context and make no sense being changed. It's maddening.

Is the default iOS mail app safe to use?

Has apple updated the security breach from the mail app yet? Using Spark just ain't it for me.
