Tip: Use Steam's Stream to play any game on your mac!

Tip: Use Steam's Stream to play any game on your mac!

    https://preview.redd.it/3d729wp9t6k51.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=e6325ecc91b45c88af0a17a024c93d65f4fc478a

The Stream option works very well on LAN. I don't get any lags (I play outside my house, the router is between 2 walls, and 7 meters away, still no lags!) . I played GTA V for hours using this tip. Heads up for MacBook Air 13 2020 i3 dual core !

    Note: I'm Apple newbie

If you don't know it yet, Steam allows you to play Windows / Unix games on your PC then stream it to your desired device. Works well for multiplayer games, without lags, at least for me.

You can play any game, not just in Steam.

Share screen to students with an unique link

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 08:06 AM PDT

    Hey,

I'm a teacher in a computer development course and I would like a tool (MacOS software or even chrome extension) to share my screen to the students who are in the room but also at home and at the same time.

It would be great if they could access the stream with a simple URL with low latency if possible : it will be mainly slides, live coding and videos.

I've already found open source tools or think about Meet / Zoom / Whereby... but my biggest "fear" is that the network may be quickly saturated with all those people (up to 40-50 on the same wifi with their own laptop) watching the stream at the same time.

Do you know a tool that could do the trick? Thank you!

How do you prevent WiFi from turning off when closing lid?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:11 PM PDT

I'd like to access my laptop remotely while I am not at my desk. But every time I close my lid, the WiFi disconnects. I have changed settings in System Pref to "Prevent Computer from Sleep" but that does not seem to work.

What's your "change input source" (language) shortcut?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:52 AM PDT

First, i'm aware to the fact that most of you don't use such shortcut as you're native English speakers (typers), but for those of you that do use it:

I just moved to MacOS after two decades of Windows/Linux usage, and while I got used to most of the changes, there's one thing that still bothers me...

I'm used to change the keyboard language by pressing Left Alt + Left Shift (my native language is Hebrew, so I must have both English and Hebrew input languages) and MacOS's default shortcut to toggle between input languages is ^ + Space / ^ + Opt + Space.

The second one is just too awkward and isn't suitable for a shortcut I perform many times a day (whenever I need to write in my native language, which applies to using chat apps and perform web searches etc.), while ^ + Space is OK but it's a shortcut I use daily in IntelliJ Idea to perform code completion, and I don't want to switch it as I'm pretty used to it and find it extremely convenient.

My question is, what's your shortcut of choice to alternate between input languages?
I'd like to change it and looking for ideas for quick, easy shortcuts other people use.

    Thanks!

I realized my apple APFS media hard drive isn't mounted and it doesn't give me the option to mount.
im running first aid and it says: first aid found corruption that needs to be repaired. to repair the startup volume run first aid from recovery (whats that???) click done to continue.

running first aid on macintosh hd fails. if possible back up the data on this volume. click done to continue.

Responding to Screen Time requests overloads MacOS

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:46 PM PDT

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 13'' with Catalina. My kids have recently got iPads and have set up Screen Time which is working fine.

However every time I respond to a Screen Time request on my MacBook then the machine starts running hot and the Activity Monitor shows massive usage from the Screen Time processes. Killing these processes gets the system back in order.

Is this a known issue? I really can't understand why Screen Time would be that demanding.

Help with Mail. Everytime I get a message from my secondary email(school account), it goes right to Trash but it’s unread. Is there any way to mark them as read and still have them come into my icloud mail as unread?

My computer won't start unless I close and re-open the lid.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:26 PM PDT

    I have a 2017 MacBook Pro. High Sierra 10.13.6.

It says I have no updates except for my Microsoft Outlook app, but this issue has long pre-dated ever installing that app.

It never remembers the background photo I set when I turn it on or restart it.

It will randomly freeze then the screen will go black for however long it decides to and then turn back on again.

Sometimes there are acid-trippy flashes on the screen.

There are hardly any files on the computer because I put them all on a USB out of fear of the computer crashing.

I'm taking it to the "genius" bar on Wednesday.

Do you think I am going to need to get a new computer?

Facebook account password changed after downloading qbittorrent

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:37 PM PDT

Hi reddit, sorry if there's any Grammer, punctuation, formatting mistakes but it's been a long night

So, I was staying at an airbnb with my girlfriend in Hungary, while there I was downloading qbittorrent.

When I downloaded it I got the error message that it was not for the correct mac version, no problem I'll just download some older versions (all from qbittorrent being hosted on fosshub) when I finally found a compatible version it told me that It needed extra permissions to install, I told my girlfriend as much and she said she would handle it as it was her mac and I'm not all to familiar with them.

We left it for awhile as we were both busy and she noticed that she was signed out of her facebook on all devices, she went to her Facebook on the mac and seen that it said (password changed 11 minutes ago) She can't log back in as she forgot the password to her email and doesn't have any trusted contacts on Facebook. She's convinced that I'm the person that changed it but I absolutely did not. As I'm not familiar with macs is there anyway I can prove my innocence? Or maybe something that I could have inadvertently done to cause this? Thanks for the help, will be happy to answer questions I'm a little desperate.

    Filter finder results

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:22 PM PDT

So, I'm in grad school and I use Spotlight to search all my files for specific words (like author names or jargon terms) a lot. This is great BUT it often leads to a million files coming up that only have the word I want in them once. Like, I'm trying to find articles that focus on the concept of "reflexivity" and when I search "reflexivity", about 200 files are returned in my search. But, like 2/3 of these articles only include the word "reflexivity" once.

I want a function that will allow me to sort the search results, so that the files that have "reflexivity" in them the most times appear first. Is there a way to do this?

PS Sorry if I'm not explaining this clearly. Thank you for your wisdom!

I feel stupid. In Chrome>right-click a pic>Save Image As. How do you navigate to a specific folder?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I'm on an older MacBook Pro running High Sierra.

All I see under "Where" are the Favorites and the devices. How to I choose a location from the finder?

My kid needs to find and save some images, so I made her a folder on the desktop, and I don't see how to show her to save the images directly in her own folder.

Sorry, I know this is probably a dumb question! It's one that is so dumb, I can't even seem to find the info by googling for it. All I found is how to change the default folder in a browser, but of course that's that's not what I'm trying to do.

High Sierra intermittent freezes (2016 MBP)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 04:33 PM PDT

When using my MacBook Pro for web browsing and other light activity, it will occasionally freeze (this occurs about once every two hours). The freeze usually lasts ~30 seconds to one minute, and it takes the form of an abrupt slowdown in responsiveness (I will click somewhere, and then the click's effect will register about 10 seconds later). During this time, the fans will occasionally start to run.

I have never needed to restart: the problem usually resolves itself within a minute. The issue seems to occur more often shortly after the computer wakes up. Curiously, doing more CPU or GPU intensive activities does not seem to worsen the issue or increase its frequency.

In case it's relevant, Chrome is my most used application, and usually when this occurs I am using it. Thank you for any advice.

    My computer specs:

    • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
    • 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
    • 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
    • Intel HD Graphics 530 1536 MB
    • macOS 10.13.6 (17G14019)

I want to dual-boot MacOS, is there anything concerning if I do this?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:54 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm new to dual-booting, so I have a lot of concerns. I intend to partition my SSD once I bought a new MBP 13" into at least 2 separate drives (personal vs. work). I've read however that the new MacOS uses volume instead of partition?

    • Is there any significant differences to this?
    • Will my SSD's lifespan be affected significantly?
    • I intend to do various installations necessary for my work in one of the partitions (which also includes installing stuff that I would never install on my personal drives). Could this affect my personal drive in any way (things like cache, user info, temp files, etc)?
    • If I have to access my work via work-monitored-VPN, can they also monitor my activities when I use my personal drive (I realize this sounds ridiculous but I wanted to be extremely sure; I hate privacy breaches)?
    • If all hell breaks loose on my work drive (let's say...snooping?, malwares, spied upon, unsecure network access, corrupted data, deleted essential OS files, compromised security, what have you; worst-case scenarios of neglect), will my personal drive ever be affected if it's a partition?

I've tried searching for these but unfortunately, it's rare enough and I could only find answers to parts of these. I'm hoping I could obtain a more comprehensive answer here...

    Thank you!

my iMac will not boot up into recovery mode

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:06 AM PDT

Hi, I have an early 2009 iMac running OS X El Capitan 10.11.16. I am trying to erase the hard drive on the mac so that I can recycle it. But, when I try to boot the mac up into recovery mode, there is a progress bar that shows up, but it gets stuck halfway and does not move. I left it for almost 24 hours once to see if it would move and it did not go a bit past halfway. Does anybody know why it does this, or how I can fix this? Thank you so much!

How to backup files from snow leopard?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:40 PM PDT

My sis has an old MacBook Pro laptop with snow leopard 10.6.8

She's trying to save all her documents in the cloud but this was before iCloud and when we use safari or chrome to log into iCloud.com, nothing happens.

Other than Transfering everything to usb, any thoughts on how to upload in the cloud to iCloud? (Also willing to use onedrive if that works?)

2013 MBP - High Sierra, Mojave or Catalina?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:36 PM PDT

Needing to update my 2013 MBP from El Capitan as it's no longer supported and many apps are needing 10.12 or higher.

Can anyone recommend a version that works well on the 2013 MBPs and similar to El Capitan (which I've found to be stable and bug-free)?

I got so many crashes and reboots on Mavericks and Yosemite, so when I got none of those problems with El Capitan I just stayed there ever since.
