[Discussion] Regarding the safety of tweaks and your information Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:32 PM PDT Recently I had a discussion (https://old.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/i317hm/question_is_it_safe_to_use_apple_pay_on_my/g08l14z/) in a post asking for the safety of jailbreaking when using Apple Pay, a lot of people seem to be misinformed, judging by how downvoted I got. So let me break this down so there's no confusion: where is sensitive information stored on iOS? As you may know, sensitive information is either not stored anywhere, in case you don't need to retrieve it back, for example the passcode; it is also important for it not to be stored anywhere because your passcode is part of what encrypts everything else, or it is safely secured encrypted by SEP, using a key and your passcode. What does SEP protect? Initially, before you unlock your device, SEP encrypts almost everything, the only things left out are iOS files and temporary files. However the moment you unlock your device and start using it, this data is decrypted and accessible by your tweaks, it would be as simple as reading a file from disk and sending it to a server. Why? This feature of SEP, is aimed at attackers with physical access, like thieves. However, SEP protects more than that. It has your Touch ID and Face ID information, your credit card information if you use Apple Pay etc. Are those safe? Touch ID and Face ID are merely checks, their information is not visible even to the user. So without some sort of exploit it is impossible to read them. However it's different with credit card numbers. You are eventually going to enter them somewhere or you already did. A tweak can easily wait for that moment and intercept the data. If you've already entered them, for example in Paypal, a tweak can easily inject code to the Paypal app and make it do things without you knowing. It's passcode protected? Just wait for the user to type it. Touch ID/Face ID protected? Just wait for the user to unlock it. What about iCloud keychain passwords? Those are similarly encrypted but server side. A tweak can't access them without user interaction either, but it can very easily wait for you to log in and access everything in that moment. The same applies to passwords not stored anywhere, a tweak can just look while you're typing it. Regarding the permissions of tweaks, they're installed with root access and unsandboxed, with the ability to inject into anything they choose. I hope I was clear enough. TLDR: SEP doesn't protect you from malicious tweaks. SEP only protects you from attackers with physical or partial access. Tweaks have a fundamental flaw that they can just see what you're doing, without needing to immediately access things. Yes, dear user, the security of tweaks is based on trust, so I hope default repos do a good job in analyzing what developers post. [Discussion] Filza and Batchomatic use with Checkra1n on iPhone x with IOS 13.6 Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:01 PM PDT Hello everyone. First off let me apologize because this is my first Reddit post so it will be incorrect I'm sure. I need some technical expertise to get my issue figured out. So here's what I have done. I downloaded the ISO file from Checkra1n (bootra1n-x86_64-0.10.2-20200526) I used Rufus 3.11 to create a bootable USB Flash Drive I got through the jailbreaking process (after many, many, attempts) Once jailbroken, there was a Checkra1n Icon on my Springboard I installed Cydia with it I installed Filza to locate the DEB file I created with a previous jailbreak I installed and opened Batchomatic to install the DEB file Batchomatic goes through it's process and I get no errors Once it completes "Restart Springboard" appears at the bottom I select that and the phone turns off completely When I start the phone, it's stock (not jailbroken). Cydia, Filza and a couple other tweaks are there as well. When I select any of them, they crash. So I tried a workaround and installed Installer and was able to open the DEB file with that. I was like a kid on Christmas morning. Until I realized that none of the tweaks that show installed on Cydia were actually not on my phone. There was nothing in the Settings area for them at all. So I have two questions, Cydia and the few other tweaks on the springboard that crash means that the jailbreak is gone and has to be redone? How do I get my DEB file properly loaded and working? I thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read my post. I look forward to any advice you can give to solve my problem. [Help] Trying to update to ios 13 to use the latest checkra1n jailbreak, but having major issues. Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:39 AM PDT I am currently on 11.3.1 trying to update an 8 plus to 13.6 on my computer, which is running Mojave. But when i downloaded the software update in itunes, it said the phone couldn't be updated because the firmware file is not compatible. Upgrading to Catalina is out of he question, so is there a work around for this? [Help] How to disable ALL diagnostic & analytic log entries in iOS? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:20 PM PDT As stated above, I can't find a way to disable all logging in diagnostics and analytics. I have never found them useful, and they are wasting space on my iOS devices. It is also a chore to delete them since many entries are created each day (sometimes many in each hour).
