It ended up being authentic it has Apple care and it was bought from Apple. I have another question is there any place to buy a MacBook Pro case for the 2020 version in California like any store?

    2006 Polycarbonate Macbook

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 08:52 PM PDT

I'm about to move out for college, and while I was cleaning my room I stumbled upon a 2006 White Polycarbonate Macbook (according to the back). I don't have a charger (they're $70, so I don't want to just buy one if the computer is garbage), and the guy at Best Buy told me it was worthless and I should just let them recycle it.

Is there any value to these guys? Even just selling it for parts on eBay or something? I haven't used a Mac in years — I have a Surface Book 3 for school and I don't know a whole lot about them. The hinges aren't broken, but it's got some scratches on the case and needs a good cleaning. I'm just not sure what to do with this. I thought about potentially trying to add in an SSD, new battery, and some RAM, but I have no clue how upgradable these are. Any recommendations, Reddit?

What’s a Good Thunderbolt Hub that fits my needs?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:29 PM PDT

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro and am looking for a way to make it my daily driver beyond just being a portable system for college. The issue I'm having is finding a reputable thunderbolt dock with the ports I need. I have:

    1. Keyboard (USB-A)
    2. Mouse (USB-A)
    3. Webcam (USB-A)
    4. Microphone (USB-A)
    5. DAC (USB-A)
    6. 4k60 display (thunderbolt 3 but no charging capabilities)
    7. Charging Cable (thunderbolt 3) What I'm looking for is one of those docks that plugs into two of the thunderbolt 3 ports and remains stable on the side of the MacBook. I unfortunately can't find one with just 4 USB-A ports. Any help would be appreciated.

Transfer screen from 2011 MacBook Pro to 2008 MacBook

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 07:41 PM PDT

Hi! I have a super bizarre question.
I would have asked on r/VintageApple but they don't allow Intel Mac stuff. Even though Apple considers these two machines "vinage" and "obsolete."
So I have a black 2008 MacBook. I like it a lot, but the screen leaves a lot to be desired quality-wise. I also have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro model that's pretty battered up, but the screen is considerably higher quality.
Would the 2011's display panel work in the 2008? They're both 13 inch and 1280x800 resolution.

    thanks!

Guys what do I do, my trackpad and keyboard are disconnected and I tried resetting my SMC, but it doesn’t work and these two images pop up instead

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 07:36 PM PDT

I just realized the MacBook Air I bought doesn’t have regular USB ports.. what’s the easiest way to transfer files from a PC via WiFi?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:12 PM PDT

Had no clue my eternal drive can't be plugged into the MacBook without an adapter which I don't want to buy.

Anyone know of any free options to transfer files from my Windows laptop to my MacBook? Thanks!

Zoom makes i5 MBA fans go ham

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 09:38 PM PDT

I got my 2020 Macbook Air i5 just a few days ago and Zoom (esp. screen sharing) has the fans going crazy and the machine getting hot. I know this is a known issue with the Air, but I didn't think it would happen so soon with something so non-pro like Zoom. Any solutions?

Which model did you buy (Air v. pro) and why?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 07:14 AM PDT

Hi guys, so I'm stuck between splashing out and getting the latest pro model for around £1799. I was curious to hear if anybody here decided to instead opt for the i5 Air instead and if so, was it worth it?

I'll be using it for light coding and to compliment my windows machine. I was stuck between using a MacBook Pro as a desktop laptop machine or buying an air for portability

Selling Macbook. How to wipe drive?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 08:14 PM PDT

Hello, I am selling my Macbook and want to make sure that none of my data is recoverable. I followed a guide that says to enable FileVault and then wipe the drive. It also states that I'd need to enter the key to mount the drive before wiping it. However, when I booted into Catalina from a USB and clicked reformat, I was never asked for the key? Is my data still not recoverable? Thanks in advance!

Service battery: 7 hours to charge until full (from 50%), is this normal?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 04:06 PM PDT

So I have an old Macbook Pro 13" mid-2012, 16 GB RAM, 240 GB, on Mojave, that I used intensively with the charger on during the lockdown (almost 4 months straight). Then, recently a "Service Battery" indicator appears. I tried to reset the SMC (pressing Shift+Ctrl+Options+Power key) but to no luck. Then I tried to recalibrate this battery by charging it to full, then I realise this problem: does it really take 7 hours to fully recharge the battery? Is this thing broken and unsalvageable? I just replaced this battery two years ago from iFixit.

2018 MacBook keyboard broke twice - not sure what to do now.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:59 PM PDT

I bought the MBP 13 16gb 2018 model. It's a great computer but the keyboard issue is starting to ruin the experience. I've had the keyboard replaced TWICE by the Apple Store, and last time they broke the logic board and touch ID during repair so had to get those replaced too and lost all my data in the process.

Wondering if anyone has the same issue. If so do you think a keyboard cover is worth the hassle, or maybe even selling and buying a base 2019? It's a bit annoying because the rest of the machine is great.

2015 MacBook Pro won’t turn on. Help!

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:40 PM PDT

My beloved, won't power on. Tried all the main troubleshooting (other than taking it apart).

I took it Best Buy last week, and although they don't work on MacBooks, he took it to the back for five minutes of charging and it turned on.

So I thought I just needed a new charger. Fast forward to today, it's not longer turning on.

Any clues or advice from the diehards?

-No water damage, humidity or overheating problems that I know of.

    Model A1502. Serial C02SKMHXFVH3

*Edit- when plugged in, the charging light is green.

MBP Early 2015 - Constantly Rebooting, even after new battery install?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:38 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but idk where else to turn to.

At the start of this year my MBP Early 2015 started restarting randomly by itself. The screen would go black and then the start up sound would come on. This was at first random and infrequent and it became more and more frequent to the point I couldn't use my laptop anymore.

I put it off from repair until last week, I called my gadget insurance up and sent off my 5 year old laptop, they returned it with a new battery (1 cycle count), they replaced the display and made it look completely fresh. But the restart problem still persists, though somewhat infrequently.**

** I have reset my MBP to factory settings multiple times, this fixes the issue for a few days and the constant restarting starts all over again. First day its infrequent and becomes more and frequent to the point I can't use it anymore.

I'm sending the laptop back to insurance on Monday but I'd rather try and fix it myself since I'll be away from home on Tuesday and will need a laptop with me. Thanks in advance

Looking for a Black case for the Macbook Pro 16 inch 2019 that doesn't leave fingerprints

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:12 PM PDT

I've bought the MOSISO one since it's recommended everywhere but boy is the black one a fingerprint magnet. I really want to find a black case since both my iPhone and iPad case are black and I think it looks clean. I really loved the simple look of the MOSISO but I really can't stand that my 4000$ plus computer would look dirty 24/7.

2017 replacement screen within a few hours

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:55 PM PDT

I went in to Apple to get my 2017 keyboard replaced due to sticky keys. a week later I was told I can pick it up and upon receiving the MacBook, noticed there was a dent that was previously not there on the LCD.

Raised the issue on the spot and said that they will do a replacement for the screen and have placed this repair on priority(3-5 days). but a few hours later I was told I can pick it up; but the store is closed, so have to pick it up the next day.

Question: does Apple Store have 2017 LCD assembly on hand? how were they able to do a replacement so quickly? did they just reuse/took the LCD assembly from another system?

Hoping to get some help. I bought a MacBook air and decided to return it but for some reason it shows up under find my.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:55 PM PDT

How do I remove it? I can't seem to remove it because it gets re-added after the new owner reconnects to the internet. I removed it from my iCloud account but no luck from find my.

    this is the message.

I just don't want to keep seeing it under my account. But if I got to the id.apple site it doesn't show up...

    Why is my MacBook crashing?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 03:53 PM PDT

I have MacBook Pro from 2017 and every time I try to (for example) save my imovie project to a file it just shuts itself down like the touchpad will still click but the screen is a lit black and the keyboard backlight is off. Or when I wanna play a game it will just turn off the same way. I'm suspecting it's an overheating issue but I'm not sure. There has been times where I'm just watching a YouTube video and my laptop will literally start crackling and popping near the top keys and then shut off. I have to hold the power button to completely shut it down then hold it again to turn it back on and I'll get the "there was a problem so your MacBook restarted" message. I'm so confused and I don't wanna take it into the Apple store until I know for sure it needs a repair.

Is the MacBook Air fine for programming?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 03:30 PM PDT

I just got a MacBook Air i7 16gb 256gb from Costco and am wondering if it's enough for me. I am currently in high school and want to get into coding / programming. I am learning html & css right now and in the future learn python or java. Is the MacBook air enough for my needs? I will be watching YouTube and Netflix and also listen to Spotify here and there, but the main load will be coding.

(Note: I will NOT be gaming on this machine.)

I'd want the laptop to last me through high school and into college so I appreciate everyone that's trying to help me out. I'd assume 256gb of storage is fine right? All I need is to storage a couple of html files and in the future whatever sizes java or python files are.

If this laptop isn't enough for me, should I go ahead and get the MacBook Pro with an i5, 8gb of ram, and 512gb of storage? Note that I'm only naming Costco options as my father religiously purchases everything (possible) at Costco. If it were the apple website i'd think an i5 (base model) with upgraded ram is fine right?

16" MBP and external monitor question

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I'm a grad student and want to buy the 16" (5300 GPU) and was wondering if there is a solution yet for heating and fan issue when connected to an external monitor, whether it works better with certain monitors (certain resolutions or refresh rates?) or certain connectors/cables (displayport vs hdmi).

Mainly using my laptop for school so multiple tabs open, video lecture, notes app, spotify playing music

Resell value once ARM MacBooks come out

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:10 PM PDT

I did buy the new 13' MacBook pro with 16 & 512Gb. My plan was to use it until the release of the "apple silicon" version so I can sell my current one for the new model. But let's imagine that this release is a huge success, will it mean that selling an earlier MacBook version will be impossible? (or at 30% of the retail price)

Taking advantage of the student deal. Is a Mac for me?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:00 PM PDT

I already have a windows machine but seeing as Apple now has a good student deal, I wanted to upgrade my setup and was temped by the new MacBook Pro. The thing is, since I already have a windows machine, I was a bit apprehensive and was instead considering a new iPad so that I can take paperless notes when in lectures etc.

I have experience with Ubuntu and coding if that helps. Moreover, I'm starting a paid research position at my university and will be using the machine for coding/ light numerical work etc.

I guess my question is, should I (and would I benefit from) buying a new MacBook Pro? Moreover, as a student, the airpods deal still applies to Ipads
