Tips to have a useful USB installer/ utility set

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 09:00 PM PDT

Self - intro: I am an independent Mac technician and I have my ACMT (Apple Certified Mac Technician) cert.

Today I am sharing what I have in my "golden key" USB drive which I always pull out first when troubleshooting any Mac 2012 to current:

    - Get an USB 3.0 drive of about 64GB. I use the SanDisk Cruzer Fit with a USB 3.0 to USB-C for newer Macs.

    - Install the middle version of macOS, for example now we have High Sierra - Mojave - Catalina. I installed Mojave onto the USB.

    - Download and copy the installer packages of High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina. Sometimes you need an older version of macOS just in case that's why I included High Sierra.

    - Download and install CoconutBattery, HWInfo apps.

Now I gonna explain how useful it is:

+ If a Mac can boot from the USB fine but fails to boot from the internal HDD, see if the internal HDD is still showing up in Finder. If yes - software corruption. If no - failed storage device.

+ CoconutBattery will help determine the battery health. HWInfo provides all sensor info and remaining SSD life. From the sensor readouts we can see if the fans are working properly and if the system is overheating.

+ For basic data recovery and/or troubleshooting folder problems, just access the internal HDD from the booted up OS. If you encounter a restricted folder, just Get Info -> Permission -> add the user of the USB and change permission to Read & Write. I encountered a very strange corrupted SSD that would unmount itself when some specific files are touched. Using this method I was able to recover all the remaining data just before the SSD stopped working altogether.

+ Of course the USB would provide all the info of the targeted Mac such as specs and serial number.

+ To reinstall or upgrade the OS, loading directly from the USB is much faster than downloading from the Internet.

A long time Chrome user switching to Safari... is this RAM usage normal for Safari?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 11:59 AM PDT

Title. I switched to Safari after being a Chrome users exclusively for over 7 years after hearing how Safari is more efficient on a Mac than Chrome. However, I looked at my Activity Monitor and saw this RAM usage for just having a Youtube video and Reddit open: https://imgur.com/9XF0FdY

Is this normal? With Chrome I would only have been at maybe like 5-6 gigs. If not is there anything I can do? I appreciate any replies!

    Multiple copy paste without ad-ons

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 07:27 PM PDT

If this doesn't belong please direct me to the appropriate sub.

I've been using Macs since '84 and never realized you can use cmd-e as a second pasteboard.

Imagine you are in a web browser and want to copy both the page title and link to a separate app at the same time.

My "old" method is to copy the link, switch apps, paste the link, switch apps, copy the title, switch apps, paste the link.

My "new" method is to copy the link to the clipboard (cmd-c), copy the title to the find pasteboard (cmd-e), switch apps, paste the link from the clipboard (cmd-v), then paste the title from the find pasteboard.

That last bit is tricky because there is no shortcut for pasting from the find pasteboard. My workaround is to cmd-f (selects contents of pasteboard), copy the find pasteboard (cmd-c), close find window (esc), paste the clipboard cmd-v.

This could be simplified with an Automator service which preserves the contents of the clipboard. I would write it in shell script as unix exposes both clipboards fully. I can also contemplate doing more exotic things like writing a shortcut which appends text to the existing clipboard rather than writing it to a separate pasteboard.

WiFi cuts out constantly, but only for sent packets. Definitely not a hardware issue. Any ideas?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 10:54 PM PDT

Every few minutes, everything on my laptop (2020 13" macbook pro) stops connecting to the internet. Network utility says there are a ton of sent packet errors but no received errors. This makes sense, since when I'm talking on discord, people will stop hearing me while I continue to hear them.

This does not happen on windows, so it's almost definitely not a hardware issue. Any ideas on how to fix this?

How to really change the name of a file?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 10:36 PM PDT

How to really change the name of a file?

I use Plex Media Server to manage my home video library. My usual workflow is to use a program called MakeMKV to rip the files from the disc. When it does, it creates .mkv files that have a very generic name, such as "Breaking Bad Season 4 Disc 2". I then open the file, identify and name it something appropriately descriptive like "Inside the episode", and then use a program called Handbrake to convert it from an .mkv to a much smaller .mp4.

Plex will then look at the file and, if it's named according to the correct format that the program can read, will catalog it appropriately.

The problem I'm running into is that even when I rename the file to the proper format, the Plex program still seems to be reading the file name as the name that was given when the file was originally ripped from the disc--"Breaking Bad Season 4 Disc 2", for example, rather than the name I renamed the file to.

MY QUESTION IS: How can I change that original/deeper file name (or "title", as it lists in the file information)?

On the left is the file as I've renamed it. On the right the window show that it still carries its original file name, which is what the Plex app seems to be reading.

Sound panel in menu bar - shows only volume most of the time?

Sound panel in menu bar - shows only volume most of the time?

Recently I reinstalled macOS, because my Mac became rather slow and a few things stopped working. Anyway, I noticed that something changed with the sound menubar icon:

    https://preview.redd.it/2uzg79oo06d51.png?width=452&format=png&auto=webp&s=c4d417e64eb59f284819c42a3cfc35e8f2bee1b3

When I click on it, that's all I see (most of the time). Sometimes, below the slider, I can also see some additional information, I think it was a list of devices (I don't remember, because it happen s rarely that I see that). However, I'm 90% sure that on my previous installation I could see that list of devices (or whatever it was) always. I don't recall seeing just the slider. When I saw that, I immediately thought that something's wrong.

Also, sometimes, when I click the speaker icon, I see the panel as it was previously, just for about a second. Suddenly the list disappears, and I'm left with just the slider.

Do you know what's going on?

How do low battery warnings work on MacOS Catalina?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 05:46 PM PDT

On this site it says that in Mac OS, for the initial warning the battery indicator turns red and for the critical warning a pop-up notification appears.

Does this apply to Catalina as well? If yes, then in which thresholds do they become triggered? 10% and 5% respectively? 6% and 5%? Or 20% and 5%?

    NO MORE SPACE?

GrandPerspective scan showing more than 50% of disk used by miscellaneous files

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is using so much space on my drive. I've used GrandPerspective with full disk access and I get this:

    https://preview.redd.it/70m01dzgg2d51.png?width=1264&format=png&auto=webp&s=39166b886951cb60e085ed30d7f503cd951be4e2

That's 61.5 GB of a 120GB drive allocated to miscellaneous space! The large files at the top left are OS updates that can't be installed -- and can't be removed -- because there isn't enough space on the disk.

I've turned off Time Machine and tried to find and remove local snapshots from the terminal. There aren't any.

There is only one user on the machine.

Has anybody experienced this? Can you suggest any next steps? I've punched everything I can think of into Google and I'm still stuck.

Horrendous insanity (iCloud Documents sync by default)

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 10:35 AM PDT

    edit: maybe not iCloud's fault?

When I upgraded to 10.15 today, after a long time putting it off, all of a sudden my documents and pictures folders completely disappeared. Just poof, gone. Replaced with a hardlink that went nowhere and just gave me an error message. Supposedly it went to iCloud or something? But I can't find it there. I also have a very, very, very slow internet connection so anything on iCloud might as well not even exist. I went back through my Time Machine but there is no record of the Documents folder ever existing.

Deleting/hiding/uploading/doing some mysterious voodoo to my entire documents folder is definitely not good behavior.

Thank God I usually use my Desktop and Google Drive instead of my Documents folder most of the time. I don't think I lost anything incredibly crucial. But this was an absolutely horrible, horrendous, miserable experience that I will not forget.

    😠

I disabled iCloud Drive and deleted the stupid hardlink and created a Documents folder again. But I probably won't be using it much, after this experience today.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 11:34 AM PDT

hey there, wondering if anyone knows whats wrong with the touchbar on my 13-inch 2018 macbook pro. the touchbar was working fine initially but after installing windows on another partition using bootcamp, my touchbar stopped working, it still responds to touch but the display dosent show anything and occasionally blinks when the computer wakes up from sleep. ive tried clearing SMC and NVRAM and i also reinstalled MacOS to see if it was potentially a driver issue.

    any help would be appreciated!
