Need Advice: Looking for a replacement Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:38 PM PDT Hello, I currently own a mid-2010 MBP with 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and I wanted to upgrade to another one since I have experienced kernel panic (randomly reboots/crashes anytime) recently. I only use it for web browsing and schoolwork however, I'm not a gamer but I do a little of everything such as music production (mostly), video editing, and photoshop. I'm kinda lost on finding a good mac, I heard that a 2015 MBP retina is the "best" of all but I would like to hear some thoughts/opinions. I cannot afford the latest 16" MBP so I rather stick with the previous ones. I'm also open on getting an iMac or Mac Mini as well. TLDR: Currently own a 10 year old laptop wanting to upgrade Update 7/28/2020 - 11:10PM EST: I forgot to mention the full specs of my laptop since a few people asked. I currently have 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, on OS High Sierra (can't update to the latest OS). [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 07:15 PM PDT I'm considering buying a 2020 Macbook Pro 13" for use in my studies. Would the base MBP with 8th gen i5 and 8gb of RAM be capable of running programs such as Autodesk applications and Adobe suite, or should I opt for the higher model with 10th gen i5 and 16gb of RAM? I'm mostly concerned about overheating and excessive fan noise as my current laptop does both. I would appreciate if anyone has any insight into using architecture related programs on Mac. Thank you! Is the MacBook Air good enough for my needs? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:58 PM PDT So, I'm in the market for a MacBook that I'm going to be using as my sole computer in college. Main concerns are multitasking and speed without hiccup. I'll definitely be utilizing spotify, Microsoft office, YouTube, Netflix, and lots of internet browsing/multiple tabs open at once. I would prefer really good battery life as well. The MacBook Air is something I've considered, but I'm curious — is it more than capable enough for aforementioned needs? Or is a pro necessary? I appreciate all the help I can get! [link] [comments]
Which would run cooler under normal use: i5 or i7? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 01:29 PM PDT Is there any difference in the thermal performance of the i5 and i7 2020 Airs under normal use? All things being equal, does one run hotter than the other, or is one more likely to be quieter than the other? And would adding more RAM have any impact on this? I'm thinking of picking up a new Air soon, and having a computer that can be quiet when hooked up to an external monitor is a priority for me. Usage shouldn't be anything too intensive (word processing, web, YouTube, Discord, etc.), but I've read some concerning things about the new Airs being quite hot and/or noisy. Anyone have thoughts on this, or would the RAM and processor not make that much of a difference? [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:25 PM PDT I have two options for work: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB -or- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB I've been using the 2015 & love it (however, it's low on memory.) The 2017 is obviously newer & "better" BUT doesn't have any USB ports (!!!). Should I just get over that & go to the 2017 or are they practically 'the same' (technically-speaking)? I use USB for recording, external CD burning, phone charging, etc so it's pretty essential to me. Thoughts? [link] [comments]

Transfer memory from a dead MacBook? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT I may need to get a new MacBook soon. I have a glorious 2010 MacBook Pro that has died again. I paid $300 to replace the motherboard last year. Today the same issues started. If I just get a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is there a way to read the old computer memory and add it to the new computer? Shamefully, I do not have back ups avail in the cloud. It's annoying; it's always full or I'm locked out and can't remember my password so I just stopped dealing with the backups. That's my fault I know. But with that in consideration, what is the best way to handle this transfer of data without spending unnecessary money? Also is there really that much of a difference between the newer macbookpro's and MacBook Air? I do very light amounts of video editing on final cut x, would that be a good idea on a MacBook Air? My connection to my WiFi is not working Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:58 PM PDT I have restarted my router, updated my computer, restarted my computer, forgot the network and connected back to it but it still won't work. The WiFi works fine to my phone and iPad but for some reason it is not working on my computer. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
What to do about nicks in the metal? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 11:08 AM PDT Today I found a little nick in the metal on my MacBook and its relatively sharp. What should I do about it? Sand it down? [link] [comments]
Lost my Thunderbolt block for my MacBook Air Posted: 28 Jul 2020 10:58 AM PDT So since it's a C to C charger and I can't find another block that has a C plugin. I had to go get a normal C charger. My MacBook seems like it's charging slower now. Could this be the cause? Wondering if I should just go buy a new Thunderbolt block [link] [comments]
Two MacBook Pros, one display. Posted: 28 Jul 2020 10:21 AM PDT I have been looking at switchers, but I'm feeling a. bit in the weeds. I need recommendations, please! I have two MacBook Pros: My personal MBP - 16-inch 2019 My work-issued MBP - 13-inch 2020 I also have the LG 5K UltraFine monitor, which has a USB-C power port and three additional USB-C ports. I would like to be able to switch from one laptop to another, much like I do with my mouse, which has a button on it that you can toggle to pair with a different computer. I don't use both laptops at once, so I'm hoping to sync all the peripherals. I have the mouse and keyboard correctly "attaching" to the laptop I'm using, but I am currently having to unplug the cables and re-plug them into the proper laptop. Any and all insight is very much appreciated! Thank you. [link] [comments]
