MBP in clamshell - entering password at rebooting

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 11:14 PM PDT

I use my MacBook Pro in clamshell mode with a Logitech K780 External Keyboard. Works good most of the time. But when I restart my MBP I can't use the keyboard to enter my password cause the keyboard isn't connected yet. So I have to open my MBP to enter the password.

Does anyone have a solution? Is it the same when I use an external Apple keyboard?

    Macbook Pro recommendations

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 10:07 PM PDT

Hello! I was planning to get a Macbook Pro preferably for college use (Zoom calls, documents, school projects and stuff) and editing music/videos with iMovie or Garageband. My choices were:

    • Base model 13 inch with 1.4 processor and 256 gb, then upgrade 8gb RAM to 16gb and buy a external hard drive if I ever need more storage. This costs about 1,300 so cost-wise this was pretty much what I was supposed to go for.

    • 2.0 processor, 512 gb, and 16 gb for $1800

    Would appreciate your output. Thanks!

Is the MacBook Air 2020 really that bad?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 12:47 AM PDT

I need a laptop for school, I study finance so it will be mostly used for not very demanding tasks.

Is the MBA 2020 really that bad for thermals? If I dont need the power of the MBP is the MBA worth it? Also how future proof is the MBA?

And what specifications should I go for? I can afford the MBP base model therefore is it a better option?

Keep 16" Macbook Pro or return and wait for Mini-LED?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:13 PM PDT

    I recently bought a 16" Macbook Pro with an 8-core 2.3GHz CPU, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and 5500M with 8GB RAM for $2825.

This was all before I came across an article that a refresh should be out later this year/early next year that will have mini LED.

I don't absolutely NEED this right now, but it's definitely a nice to have for my workflow... plus I've already set up and migrated a lot of stuff over to it.

I'm still within the return period but having trouble deciding.

MacBook Air 2020 i3 256gb 8RAM overheating by simple coding?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I bought a MacBook literally a couple days ago and have done barely anything on it. Today, I decided to try and learn how to develop simple swift code. So I downloaded some of the beginner developer apps and began those cartoon coding building blocks when my Mac started to overheat and the fan was loud. Is this normal since I bought the i3 and that little bit of coding it too much for the Mac? And if it is normal is it harmful to my Mac to continue coding or just annoying having it be slow for the time being?

    low battery life

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:54 PM PDT

i use a 2019 macbook pro, and the battery runs out ridiculously fast. on a good day, i can maybe squeeze 3 - 3.5 hours out of it. but most of the time, the battery just runs out in about 2.5 hours. and when the battery is below 20%, the power drains exponentially faster.

i only use google chrome, excel, word, and preview most of the time.

since this isn't the 10 hours that apple promised me, can someone give me some advice?

    Running out of ideas.....

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:48 PM PDT

    Hi!

Ok, So I was having issues with my Macbook Pro 2015 retina display 13 inch where the battery died so I got the status 'Replace No', 'Battery Not Charging' and all of that. So ofc it would only work on the power adapter and if I took it out it would stop working. So ofc to save myself hundreds I bought what I needed and attempted to fix the issue myself. The first thing I did was buy a new battery. After installing the new battery and doing an SMC reset, same status, same issue, no change.

I then came across this article: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/170568/New+battery+is+not+charging+and+condition+says+replace+now It mentions that if this issue occurred the guy at the show would recommend replacing the I/O board (btw I know this is for a 2011 macbook air, But I found a guide for a 2015 retina macbook pro and followed it and did exactly what it said). So yeah surprise surprise after buying a new I/O board now and replacing that and doing an SMC reset, again same issue.

I have heard that with a new battery you need to calibrate it, however, I can't do that as that requires disconnecting the power and the computer just shuts off this way so it's not an option. The battery cycle amount is currently 0 counts however the battery health reads as 100% on 'coconut battery health'

I'm fast running out of ideas... and the will to live and I'd really rather save myself hundreds of points by taking it to a repair shop. So if u guys have any fixes to this issue or other suggestions of what I need to try that would be massively appreciated as I've exhausted all my options.

    Thanks!

    MacBook Pro's

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 04:55 PM PDT

(Disclaimer: I want to keep this as objective as possible and I want to keep this an open discussion. If this post breaks or is in problem with any rules, please inform me of that and I will edit/change this post accordingly. I have read through all rules and think that this post does not break any of them, but I'm want to really make sure that everything is in the give rules)

    Hey,

I finally have decided to stop hating on apple and give them a fair chance. I never really liked apple because of their anti repair stuff, their premium prices, bad architecture, etc. etc. But I do want to give them a fair chance, so I started my search 4 days ago to find a good (used and not way too expensive MacBook). After going through all flaws of MacBooks until the 2010 era, I have found that it's nearly impossible to buy a good long lasting MacBook. 2011 has the GPU Problem, 2012 has the recoil issue and no way to get a battery for nowadays which is a big problem when I'm buying used. 2015+ keyboard problems, display cable problems, humidity problems, apple can make device unusable when temperate with, too high prices for my budget atm.

That's leaves only the 2013 (but avoid Iris GPU (not a major problems, just from I've heard they are more likely to have GPU related problems)) and 2014 models (for which I don't have any info of major failures/flaws), which are good but sadly seem rare on the used market which is a bummer.

I don't want to hate on apple for all these problems, I want to give them an honest and fair chance, which is why I'm even trying to get a good one and daily drive it for about a year. But it seems that there are no real good options to choose from sadly, every version seems to have a major problem, you don't really see this with Dell XPS, Lenovo/(back then) IBM ThinkPads, Dell latitude, Acer swift, Lenovo Yoga, etc. Those don't really have such major issues which can hard brick the whole device for such a small reason.

Do you guys have any suggestions (or corrections, sorry if I did get something wrong, please correct me. I will redo the research and edit this based on what you guys know) or maybe tips on which MacBook is good/will last for a while and is usable.

P.S.: I really don't want to just dump on apple here, I am really trying to look at all this from an objective perspective, if you feel like this post is not objective, please point out what you think is more opinion based and I'll try to edit/remove that part.

First Macbook Pro 16" purchase with 5600m – wondering what dock/combo best for HDMI 4k/60hz options, power, ports, ect? (lengthy)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 04:14 PM PDT

I have a 16" coming and I am excited. its my first Apple product I've gotten with my own money (been using a 2011 and 2015 for work throughout the years) and I know I am in need of a good dock/ports/ect.

I am looking at getting a pair of ASUS TUF VG27AQ screens in the near future. so I am wondering between that and my desktop tower in my setup what cable-combo would work best. I take it HDMI will be fine for 1440/144hz. While I am sure that won't be too much an issue, however, when needing 60hz for my TCL TV or other TV I have around my house/home. I hope in the future to have a new LG CX OLED, but, that's not happening for at least 6 months but thought to note it. (but the whole HDMI 2.1 is a another issue entirely ...not concerned now)

    Concern 1: HDMI 4k/60hz

I am seeing lots of conflicts with using HDMI and the 30/60hz issue. I saw a video that 9-to-5 Mac put out (some time ago) and curious if in combo with that and a dock I will have 4k/60hz access easily.

    Concern 2: Power Drawl

    without a need to do
I am torn between a few. The HyperDrive NET 6-in-2 looks nice as it says it has 100W power capability.

However, the Satechi Type-C Dual Multimedia one looks nice as well. I like the non-flush as I think it gives that desk wiggle-room to be able to tuck away, but, if it is visible it also looks very clean and does not have giant logos plastered on the areas of the product too. However, I see the rating is for Max: 60W and I wonder, if for instance I go inside Windows and fire up a game: Will I see a drop in my battery life as I game? I would find it annoying if I were doing something more intensive and see a slow drain. I also see in the specs for 1 port is 4k/60hz and another is 4k/30hz; will the SIP override fix this as well?

Big thanks for anything you can offer.

Is it me or the 13" feels crammed?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:30 PM PDT

    I've been considering buying a MacBook Pro 2015 13 or 15 inch, and luckily I currently use my sibling's MBA 2015 13"

IMO the 13" is crammed, whenever you see any kind of website, it always looks like your view is cropped, the view is not satisfying - I tried the 'zoom out' function but then text is too small and I imagine its not better even with retina.

Is it me or 13 inchers suck if you like reading or web browsing? Others stuff were decent enough IMO, like Google Sheets, iMovie etc

control + option + shift + power button did not help. NVRAM reset did not help.

Thunderbolt Ports Cause Slow Internet Speeds?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I just bought the 2020 Macbook Pro with the 10th Generation i5 configuration (four thunderbolt ports). I'm noticing that when I have utilize the thunderbolt ports (via a dock and dongle) and have those plugged in, my internet speed becomes abysmally slow. Most of my pages don't even load and I do speedtests that result between 1-3 mbps download. However, when I take out the dongles, my speed goes back up to about 45-50 mbps. Is there anything I can do about this?

One of my dongles is actually a Startech Docking Station Model TB3DK2DPPD with only an Display Port being used and a Surface Laptop & Keyboard combo via a USB.

The other dongle is a cheap amazon dongle that I use so I can connect another HDMI port.

    Thank you!

Trackpad and Keyboard Won't Work after waking my MacBook from sleep

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:24 PM PDT

Hello, I have a 2019 MacBook Air running OS X Mojave 10.14.6, and whenever I close and reopen my MacBook, the keyboard and trackpad don't work. This has been happening for a while, but before they would start working after at most 10 seconds, but now it takes multiple minutes, complete with a popup saying that it's searching for a keyboard, which takes 30 seconds to a minute (roughly) to complete. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    2020 MacBook pro

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I am considering to buy apple MacBook Pro 2020 customed 1,4Ghz 8th gen i5 16 gb 512gb. However, I am a bit concerned about the fact that there's some bugs when using final cut. I'm not heavy final cut user so considering this option. But, I saw YouTube that 2020 version stuck more than 2019 ver. Can I have opinion from who bought this?

I'm not sure if this is true but I saw comment that there's problem with MacBook it self and not the final cut. I also saw other comment that it's only the first version on the factory had this problem and now there are no problem.

Can anyone please comment if you know any problem with this.

    Thank you

Secure my Macbook for Hackers & Privacy reasons!

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 12:20 PM PDT

Hey - I just got a new MacBook.

So before logging in to my social media accounts, e-mails or downloading stuff. I want to secure my MacBook so hard for hackers & privacy reasons.

I've did some research already. I'm about to get ProtonVPN. What do you guys think about that one?

Also what are the must things I should definitely do?

Is a password manager really that safe? Is it the safest solution out there at the moment or is it even better to just make long passwords with lots of symbols and numbers and write them down on a paper and stay logged in on websites?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 12:01 PM PDT

I'm considering getting a 2020 MacBook Pro 13 inch with the 8th gen i5, 16 GB ram and a 256 SSD. I will be using bluestacks for Android emulation, learning to code a bit, and some graphic design work as well as writing. Will this be enough for my needs?
