Would getting an old iPod touch for iMessage be a good idea?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 10:23 AM PDT

Hi, I'm an android user(sorry) and I'm kinda tired of being left out of my friend's group chats. I saw a listing for a 4th gen iPod touch going around for 20-30 USD, and am considering on buying it solely to use for iMessage. Does iMessage work well on older apple products?

    Thanks.

    Predictions of the ARM Transition

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 03:25 PM PDT

It might be fun to speculate on how the transition to ARM is going to look. Here is my speculation. What is yours?

    • 2 year transition.
    • Apple switches to a two period between processor core changes.
    • Apple starts to simplify their line up.
    • Apple wants to keep price points similar to what they have now, but add a bit extra value at those price points.

Apple makes three groups of chips.

    1. Fully integrated chips (CPU, NPU, and GPU in one chip)
    • A14: 2 + 4 with 6 core GPU
    • A14x: 4 + 4 with 8 core GPU
    • A14y: 8 + 4 with 10 core GPU
    • Fall of 2020
    1. Discrete GPU chips (CPU, NPU in one chip, GPU in another)
    • A14d: 16 + 4 CPU and a G1 with 20 core GPU
    • A14e: 32 + 4 CPU and a G1x with a 30 core GPU
    • Fall of 2021
    1. Fully discrete set (CPU, NPU, and GPU each in its own chip)
    • This will not come until the A15 series core in two years. 64 + 4 core chip.
    • Fall of 2022

    September 2020

New iPhones and iPad Airs are released based on the A14 chip. AppleTV gets the A12z chip. Everything Apple sells NEW must have at least an A12 chip in it (developers can limit apps to A12 based chips now)

    October 2020

Apple releases all Macs that use the A14y chips. 13" MacBook Pro, a Mac Mini at the low end, and the 24" iMac that replaces the 21" models. Apple's goal is to offer a bit more value at similar price points to what they have now in order to get users to switch to ARM.

    Spring 2021

Apple releases A14x based devices. iPad Pros come with Mini-LED screens as, eventually, all "Pro" models will have.

    September 2021

Minor updates to iPhones, but not major processor changes (now on a two year cycle). Major focus on wearables, including Apple Glass announcement.

    October 2021

Release of Macs that use the discrete GPU chips. New 16" MacBook Pro with Mini-LED. 30" iMac. New iMac Pro with 30" Mini-LED. High end Mac Mini with discrete graphics. xMac with two PCI slots in it... (we all can dream)

    September 2022

New A15 architecture released for iPhones and whatnot.

    October 2022

Updates to all fully integrated chip Macs. Release of the Mac Pro with the A15 based 64 core chip, plus a high powered GPU, and an option to add second GPU or a discreet NPU.
