MacBook Pro vs Air with same SSD/RAM/Processor core? What's the difference. Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:27 PM PDT MacBook Air, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 1.1 GHz quad core 10th Gen Core i5. $1500 MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2.0 GHz quad core 10th Gen Core i5. $1800 Attempting to determine which one to get but the difference seems marginal. I know there's a slight screen color/brightness edge in favor of the Pro, but other than that, what's the practical difference with such similar specs? [link] [comments]

Colorful static on MacBook Air and new desktop background after entering password Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:48 PM PDT My wife ran into this issue tonight. After using her computer, All of a sudden colorful static appeared. Then, it promoted her to enter her password above her desktop background. Once the computer logged her in, her chrome windows prompted her to restore her tabs, which worked correctly. Her desktop background, however, was changed to a different background (not one of her photos) and she couldn't find her previous background. Any ideas of what happened? [link] [comments]

Sorry another MBA i3 vs i5 vs MBP thread but really need some help. Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:35 AM PDT First Reddit post so please be gentle. Can I ask everyone for some advice? I've got myself into a rabbit hole while trying to upgrade my 2012 MBP which has been an amazing machine. My use base will be predominantly safari/chrome (multiple tabs), Spotify, Youtube, Office. I'd like to have the option of occasionally doing small amount photo editing. I realise future proofing is a somewhat a ridiculous wish but I would really need this machine to last 5-6 years. The options I have come down to are (with student prices): MBA i3 16GB RAM 256 SSD - $1078 MBA i5 16GB RAM 256 SSD - $1168 MBP 10th Gen 16GB RAM 512 SSD - $1618 I was initially convinced I was going to get the MBA i5 16GB RAM 256 SSD but I have been spooked by the thermal issues that keep being brought up. If I were to go with the i5 would I be worse off with heat/performance vs the i3 for LOW INTENSITY tasks or is it just noticeable when you push it. I'm not too worried about differences in CPU temperatures but actually how it feels under the keyboard. I could cope with keyboard warmth if I know I'm doing higher intensity tasks but I'd be frustrated if it happened during simple tasks. I was keen on the i5 as i'd like the option of more power if I needed it in the next 5 years. The MBP is clearly a massive jump up and would really really stretch my budget. I wouldn't want to go for the base MBP with 16GB RAM upgrade as I feel you get a significantly better MBP with the 10th gen for a (relatively) minor jump in cost. I just have this niggling feeling I'd regret not investing with all the MBA heat issues and ARM changes circling. The MBA does suit my use case more for portability etc. I realise these are very 1st world problems but any advice I'd really appreciate. [link] [comments]

MBA 2020 with i5 8gb or i3 16gb? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:53 PM PDT Hi, I'm looking to buy a MBA and want to know whether a i5 8gb, or i3 with 16gb ram will suite my needs better? I'm going to be streaming videos, using multiple chrome tabs with ms office applications open. I'm hoping for this laptop to last me 4/5 years. I won't really be doing any video or photo editing. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Stripped MacBook Pro 2015 Internal Screw Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:13 PM PDT I stripped the last T5 Torx (3.2 mm) screw securing the battery board. This was the last screw I had to unscrew to remove the battery. Wondering if anyone has any tips. I tried the rubber band trick already and it did not work. I don't want to use a dremel. I included a sample picture of which screw it is. I haven't tried reaching out to apple support yet. Any ideas? Here is the picture: https://imgur.com/xB88Dzf Thanks! [link] [comments]

Need advice for a MacBook Air purchase Posted: 28 Jun 2020 04:47 PM PDT Hello, I am a college student and I'm planning on buying a MacBook Air 2020. I'm just wondering which processor, memory, and storage would be best fit for me? I'm not going to use it for music editing, videos, etc. Mainly will be used for writing assignments, using excel and the internet. Nothing intense. I'm planning on keeping this computer until Physician Assistant school. So maybe like 4-6 years. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Jun 2020 04:13 PM PDT My son is looking to purchase a MacBook Pro and will be doing a lot of video and music editing using Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro. We are looking at the two following models. For the additional $120, I think the loss of SSD storage (512GB vs 1TB) is worth the larger screen and upgraded graphics card but would like any opinions on pros vs cons for both machines. I also have a couple other questions... a. Final Cut Pro X recommends 1GB of VRAM. My understanding is that VRAM is related to the graphics card but I can find any information stating that either Intel Iris Plus Graphics or AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory have this. Can someone please confirm which of these if any have 1GB of VRAM? Is GDDR6 memory the same as VRAM? b. I've listed the prices below which are the "education" prices. Are these prices along with the Airpods promotion the best price we are likely to find? Any potential for a 4th of July sale? Thanks in advance for the responses. I want to recondition my macbook pro mid 2009 Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:11 PM PDT So my problem is that i have this computer laying in my house an i want to give it an use. I know that is a very old computer but in the country where i live its dificult to buy a new computer in general beacuse of the economy. The computer works fine, but its extremely slow sometimes. I watched a couple of youtube videos where they change the cd reader with an ssd and that helps with the turn on time and the applications response, but i was wondering if there was anything else i could do. The macbook is currently using OS X: el capitan. Thanks in advance for your help! [link] [comments]
[BUYING HELP] Choosing Macbook pro configuration for programming Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:58 AM PDT Hi, I want to buy a mac book pro for programming. Currently I'm a rising sophomore CS major and I want to choose a mac that helps me with my learning and later on after graduation (data analytics). I don't program games or heavy graphic designs. I sometimes use adobe illustrator (not heavy or frequent though, more like designing posters, logos) and I save my photos, docs on drive. What configuration should I choose? Is it necessary to update to 16gb ram and core i7 or is it fine to stick with the minimum (core i5, 8gb ram, 256gb SSD)? My budget is 1k5. Please help. Thanks [link] [comments]
MBP 2019 Keyboard Replacement Question Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:00 PM PDT I was looking into Apple's Keyboard Service Program and I noticed that 2019 13-inch MBPs with two Thunderbolt ports aren't covered by the program. Only 2019 13-inch MBPs with four Thunderbolt ports are covered. Has anyone with the two port version gotten their keyboard replaced/does Apple service the two port version? [link] [comments]
Durable Cool MacBook Pro 16" 2019 Cases Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:53 AM PDT I recently bought a KECC case, and while it looks awesome and had great reviews it seems to kind of detach when I open my MBP from the center. Does anyone have good suggestions for a solid brand that makes cases that are durable, allow the screen to move back fully, and have cool designs? It is also very important to me that it isn't clunky. I want something that doesn't make my MacBook prof feel like a brick. Thanks everyone! [link] [comments]
MacBook dock with 2 HDMI/power passthrough? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:21 AM PDT Hi guys I want to use 2 external screens with my MacBook Pro and a usb-c dock. Essentially when I am at home, I plug my laptop into the hub and use full size keyboard and mouse and use it like a desktop. My current hub only supports 1 hdmi output though so that's no good. I was thinking about getting a usb-c adapter but then I wouldn't be able to keep the laptop on charger. Do you have any recommendations of good hubs for MacBook that support either power passthrough or 2 hdmi ports??? [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:50 AM PDT Hi everyone, I recently bought a 2020 Macbook Pro and I was wondering whether it would be worth returning it and waiting for the new Apple Processors. I'm still within the two weeks to return no questions asked. I say this because one of the reasons I bought this mac was because I got 5.5 years (still going but not great anymore) MPB 2014. 2000€ + is so much to spend on a product that I have doubts on long term support. What are everyones thoughts? I have no absolute need of a new laptop and could squeeze an extra year or so out of my MBP2014 if it meant then buying a laptop with long term support and updates. Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:32 AM PDT Hi there! I've got a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro i5 2.4Ghz, 6GB RAM DDR3 1600Mhz, macOS High Sierra. I used to use it, but switched to a Windows ThinkPad because i didn't get Catalina support on the MacBook, and plus, the fans kept spinning up and the core heated up to an insane temp under minimal usage. So, now i use a ThinkPad as my daily driver, but i've got the old MBP sitting around in my shelf. I don't have the heart to sell it because i still remember buying it as if it was yesterday, and it has served me well for 9 years. It's very dear to me, even if it does have a lot of issues right now. My question is : what can i use this MacBook for? I don't need another laptop in my day-to-day usage, but i don't have the heart to sell it and i feel sad seeing it sit unused. Any ideas, guys? [link] [comments] |
