[Discussion] Questions about Jailbreaking and the History of Jailbreaking

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:59 PM PDT

If I could virtually interview a Jailbreak Tool Developer with these questions, that would be really cool!!!

Hey! My Computer Science Class offered us an opportunity to do a brief presentation on anything of our choosing, as long as it is Computer Science related. I decided to do it on Jailbreaking and the History of Jailbreaking. Here are some of the questions I don't know how to answer:

    1. Fundamentally what's the difference between Unc0ver and Checkra1n? I know Checkra1n is a Boot ROM (hardware / iBoot?) exploit, but what's Unc0ver? What exactly is a zero-day exploit? Where would they be placed in this picture?
      1. Another question about Checkra1n, how does running Android work fundamentally?
    2. In Cydia, what exactly is a repository? (Kinda know how to answer this) Which were the first Repos? Is BigBoss one of the first?
    3. Is there a good analogy for achieving a jailbreak? I remember there being a guy breaking out of a jail one
    4. What is the kernel? Is it like pop corn? Lol

Here is what I got so far, feel free to read!

    Jailbreaking

    • What is jailbreaking?
      • Jailbreaking is the process of gaining root access to the iOS Firmware, allowing users to 'break out' of the restrictions placed by Apple. Compared to Rooting, Jailbreaking is the process of breaking out of Apple's Walled Garden Operating System and into the world of infinite possibilities. Once Jailbroken, the user can download tweaks from repositories to tweak and customize their device.
      • Is this definition good? Anything else I should add?
    • What different types of jailbreaks are there? There are four different types of jailbreaking, all of which result in the same goal.
    1. Tethered - Once jailbroken, the device cannot boot again without a computer. Every time the user needs to reboot, the user needs to tether/plug their device into their computer and run a program to boot their phone.
    2. Untethered - Once jailbroken, the device can reboot freely, untethered to any computer. Every time the device rebooted, it will be in a jailbroken state.
    3. Semi-Tethered - Once jailbroken, the device can boot into a normal state without a computer. The user must tether their device to their computer and run a program to re-jailbreak.
    4. Semi-Untethered - Once jailbroken, the device can boot into a normal state without a computer. The user must run an application on their device to re-jailbreak.

I'll go more into depth about what one can do with a jailbroken device and such. (ie Tweaks)

    History of Jailbreaking

    • Jailbreaking was born with the birth of the original iPhone. When the first iPhone was released in 2007, it was exclusive to AT&T. Ironically, all of the major carriers at the time thought the iPhone would flop. They couldn't have been more wrong. *I will discuss the first lock screen bypass here too
    • As time went on, more and more people wanted to use their iPhone on different carriers. On August 24th, 2007 the first jailbreak was released. George Hotz (or GeoHotz) figured out a way to modify the original iPhone's hardware to accept different SIM Cards. Now the battle between Apple and Jailbreakers began.
      • On September 11th, 2007 the 'iPhoneSimFree' team released AnySim and iUnlock Reloaded. Both of which unlocked the original iPhone via software.
    • On April 3, 2008, Jay Freeman (Saurik) and his PwnageTool released their tool, also named PwnageTool, to lackluster interest. On July 19th, 2008 however, they released the 2.0 Version of their tool. It introduced the now popular Jailbreaking app, Cydia.
      • Cydia: a type of small moth that lives inside of Apples
      • Cydia allows users to download and install tweaks from repositories onto their devices. Tweaks allow the user to customize their device.
    • I'll discuss how overtime features of newer iPhones were ported to older phones. ie video recording on the original iPhone, Siri for the iPhone 4, iOS 7 for the iPod Touch 4th Generation, 3D Touch for the iPhone 5s, SE, and 6, Portrait Mode for older iPhones.
    • I'll skip ahead to talk about Unc0ver and Checkra1n.

Anything else notable that I am missing? Comments? Questions? Concerns? Did you learn something?

[Free Release] 11Cam for A12 Devices

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:13 PM PDT

    Hello everyone.

Some of you might be using my tweak 11Cam, which brings the iPhone 11 Pro Camera interface to older iPhones.

It has long been my theory that the shutter bugs which everyone have been experiencing is due to the new app being compiled for arm64e devices. That theory has been proven correct today.

11Cam 0.0.7 now works for A12 Devices (XS, XR, XS Max) without any bugs. It also adds the 11 Pro zoom interface thanks to u/lilacvibes_

Download it from my repo: michaelmelita1.github.io, and follow me on twitter for updates @michael_melita

    Cheers, Michael

And for the love of god please don't ask for A11 support or iOS 12 support. If your on an X, 8+ or 7+, use BetterCam, and if your on a SE, 6s, 6s+, 7 or 8, use 11CamMin

    [Tip] The power of Activator

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:22 AM PDT

I haven't been Jailbroken in years, but, with the new Unc0ver our for the newest firmware I took the plunge again.

I've just remembered how I used to set up my home screen using activator to keep things minimal but quadruple the number of apps/shortcuts immediately available from the home screen.

Using activator, you can build specific shortcuts per app icon. For example, you can build an action for "Flick Down on Safari Icon". You can then assign this action to be whatever, for example, "Launch Firefox"

This way, you can launch 5 apps per icon (flick up, left, right etc).

You can assign flick down on reminders app to be "create new reminder" or any other app shortcut available on the system.

It's extremely powerful and is like a tweak in its own right.

Just wanted to share an old tip from an old tweak from an old jail-breaker for all you newbies.

[TUTORIAL] Block apps from Appstore if your Appstore++ is broken on iOS 13.5 A12/13.

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:00 PM PDT

[TUTORIAL] Block apps from Appstore if your Appstore++ is broken on iOS 13.5 A12/13.

    Background:

With unc0ver 5.0, Appstore++ stopped working for many of us. The dev stated that they won't be pushing an update for a fix on twitter. Errors like "request timeout" if you are trying to up/downgrade and blocking apps are the main things that broke. For up/downgrade, you can simply choose to manually install. After much trial and error for few days, my noob ass managed to find a solution to block app updates.

    Things you'll need:

    1. Filza File Manager
    2. Appstore++
    3. Appstore BundleID
    4. Appstore++ Preference File
    5. Appstore++ File Snapchat Edition

NOTE: IF YOU JUST WANT TO BLOCK UPDATES FOR SNAPCHAT, JUST DOWNLOAD THE SNAPCHAT EDITION FILE AND PASTE IT IN "/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/" through FILZA. If you want to block more apps, please follow the steps below.

    Step 1

After installing tweaks mentioned (1, 2 & 3 respring), download the 4. Appstore++ Preference File and move/replace it in "/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/" through FILZA.

    Step 2

Go to Appstore, find the app you want to block updates for and press and hold the application icon. Doing so will present you with a pop up of bundle ID of that app. copy it.

    https://preview.redd.it/yy2tc2dczl151.png?width=1125&format=png&auto=webp&s=276c6978ee0ac7fab78148d45c3483ff7ea69c9a

    Step 3

Open Filza and go to "/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/" and search for com.cokepokes.appstoreplus.plist file and open it and Click on the arrow beside "Root".

    https://preview.redd.it/2xqcqz5izl151.jpg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=398e28b873f56deacdf54d8a1cee5cd0895ca333

    Step 4

Click the arrow beside "blocked_updates" (1) and then "Item 0" (2)

Now click on the " i " (3) in front of "bundleId"

    https://preview.redd.it/le0w08lt0m151.jpg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0165c06f6c8df9c5293bfab0dd63fa9178efaae6

& enter the copied bundle ID of the app you want to block updates for in "Value".

    https://preview.redd.it/f2wfwjtv0m151.jpg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae017fccb8d98d68bffa04942fcf61c1f911b6c0

After that click "Back" and "Save".

    https://preview.redd.it/hfwde7911m151.jpg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2568876ee478ee8a020cd466e3cb5f677c4dab49

Go back to App Store and refresh your apps wanting to be updated by dragging down on the screen and you'll see that app hidden. Yayyyyy..!!!

    Step 5

For your convenience, I have added 3 items in the "blocked_updates" section. You can block up to 3 apps but don't worry, if you have more, step 6 is for you.For blocking second App, Just repeat step 2,3 & 4 and enter the bundle of the second app in "Item 1 > bundleId > Value.

    https://preview.redd.it/fh85yhde1m151.jpg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7458dc4dfc05a7152f9cad7cc331bb7dfe2930b1

And for the 3rd app, repeat and enter in "Item 2".

    Step 6

If you wish to block more apps, Click the " i " of "blocked_updates" > Add Item > click Item 3 > click String and select Dictionary > click Add item below > click New item > type "blockAll" (case-sensitive) under name > click String and choose "Boolean" > switch NO to YES > click Edit on top to go back > click Add item > click New item > type "bundleId" (case-sensitive) > leave "TYPE" to STRING > enter you 4th app bundle id copied from Appstore to the "Value"

A video to help this process can be found here.

    Step 7

    Profit. Profit. Profit.

P.S. If you like this tutorial, you absolutely don't have to but if you wish, you can gift me a tweak since I don't have Paypal in my country and can't buy tweaks :)

[Update] Bedrock — add minecraft splashes to your lockscreen: now supports iOS 13 (Packix, $1.50)

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:01 PM PDT

    Howdy folks,

Today I got an email asking why bedrock wasnt working (it hasn't since 13.0). That reminded me of Bedrock's existence, and apparently there's still demand for it. I have just released Bedrock 1.1.1 with support for iOS 13 and also to fix issues with preferences being broken.

Bedrock is also open source if you're interested in learning how to make tweaks, https://github.com/Samgisaninja/mcsplash. Yes, it's an open source, paid tweak. Yes this is contradictory. Yes if you want it free you can just compile it yourself. blah blah

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:40 PM PDT

A tweak like this would be useful to me cause I always forget to like the videos after I'm done watching them on the App. You could put filters so it doesn't just like everything like maybe you have to be subbed to the person and the video has to be completely over before it auto likes.

Anything like this would be useful for me.

Maybe a reminder after every video? That would be kind of annoying though
