I spent a week with Sandship, a freshly released production chain game like Factorio and Satisfactory. Come read my thoughts.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:54 AM PDT

There's a certain satisfaction to production chain games. Start with a raw resource, process it a few times and before you know it you're crafting mechanical assemblers to manufacture ammunition for gun turrets. Which you also created, of course.

You wake up aboard Sandship, a gigantic mega-factory that's cold and silent, chained to the ground in the middle of a ruined town. Who you are and how you got there are a mystery that will have to wait, as the factory starts to come alive around you. A tutorial guides you through the basics of crafting materials for repairs and with a grunt and shudder, you are free. Free to meander the desert, explore the world through quests and craft to your heart's content.

There were lots of factories like yours, once upon a time. And as word spreads that you're back online, requests come flooding in. One buyer wants steel springs. Another needs glass tubes. A third; copper wires. These orders, along with quests, are the reason you craft anything at all.

Playing the game is simple - you have a grid and a selection of machines that either synthesise a resource, move an object, or turn X into Y. How you construct and arrange the chain determines what it spits out the other side.

Every request is like a puzzle. Past a certain point, making one iron plate per second is not enough and you'll need to think hard about how to optimise until you can afford to upgrade your floor space. And this, of course, is where the free-to-play model comes in.

Throughout the game you need to upgrade your buildings, which increases their capacity. You will also need to collect materials and credits to unlock new tech. Both are pricy and both will make you wait. These timers are annoying, but not critical and won't stop you from cashing in on orders... The orders will do that just fine on their own.

Completed orders are shipped off to their recipients and you must wait up to 12 hours before they get the goods and you get paid. On its own, this still wouldn't be so bad, since there's always quicker quests available. Except that you can only complete one quest at a time. Except that the reward for each order (along with credits) is a chest which could contain an artefact, which are required for some story quests and floor upgrades. Except that you can buy a temporary booster that turns 12 hours into 12 minutes... but only affects one of the four order types.

In so many ways, Sandship feels at odds with itself:

    • Like a cat, it wants to play with you... until it doesn't. Even the largest contracts take me, at most, 15 minutes to complete. After which I can either focus on the main quests, or put down the game down and come back later.
    • It wants you to buy new factory buildings and expand, but puts hard limits on how much you can craft at a time. Since there's no penalty for removing machines - they simply go into your inventory and cost nothing to place again - I got through the entire game using only two buildings - even though I had space for many more.
    • It hyper focuses on production and optimisation, and then throws a tower defence mini-game at you. And a puzzle mode, where you create a production line, delete some parts, and ask other players to recreate it. The puzzle mode is very cool, to be fair, but both feel superfluous to the core experience.

Despite wrestling with the free-to-play beast, I had a tremendous amount of fun. The core concept of the game, figuring out efficient chains of production, is put together incredibly well. Even now that I've done everything the game has to offer, I'm still thinking about how I can optimise steel production to use a smaller footprint...

Looking for simple games my small children can play with their grandparents across the country.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:26 AM PDT

As the title says, I'm looking for something that my 6 year old can play with her grandparents that live on the other side of the country. Right now, they FaceTime each other and each get out a battleship set and play that way, or they use a pad and paper to play hangman. They've even tried to play checkers over FaceTime, with my kid telling her grandmother which pieces to move.

None of this works very well, obviously, and I keep thinking there must be a better way. Are there any simple games like this that include a FaceTime or video chat feature, or even just a voice chat? The game isn't even all that important, it's more about the interaction, and, of course, keeping the boredom at bay.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Your favorite MMORPGs?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:47 AM PDT

    Hey all,

There's such an overwhelmingly large number of MMOs in the App Store. It's utterly impossible for me to try them all or even check them all out. What are your favorites? To narrow it down a bit, here's what I'm looking for - I'm hoping to find one that's well-populated, with tons of aesthetic customization as well as very very in-depth builds (multi class system? Very large skill trees? Something like that), and not overly p2w would be a huge advantage as well. Mostly importantly though, I really would prefer to avoid an MMO that has any type of auto-play, auto-run, or any type of automated gameplay whatsoever. Even if it's totally optional, the presence of any auto-gameplay in a mobile MMO just ruins it for me.

So what are your favorites that match those parameters? Any type of discussion at all is welcome! Also, I know this question has been asked before, but the mobile MMO market is constantly changing so much that the older threads often aren't as relevant. Anyway - thanks guys.

Any suggestions for iPad slideover or multitasking games?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 09:55 PM PDT

    Hi.

As title says. Anyone know of any slideover or multitasking games? I'm not fussed whether freemium, premium, apple arcade or straight free.

Nothing that requires full attention, timers are fine, incrementals are fine. Just something I can slide over click and progress a bit then slide away.

    Thanks in advance,

    SquareEnix iPhone X

    Posted: 06 May 2020 08:37 PM PDT

Apparently a bunch of their games were updated for fit the new aspect ratio on iPhone X, though they're just filler images instead of the black bars. I've listed them below.

Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Adventures of Mana, and Valkyrie Profile.

Also Secret of Mana might be updated, though I don't have it to check.

This is how you can get apps/games not available for your store:p

    Posted: 06 May 2020 10:23 AM PDT

This is how it's been working for me:

    1. Open the App Store and tap on your picture at the top.

    2. Tap on your name.

    3. Tap on "Country/Region" and then on "Change Country or Region". ** You'll see a message telling you that this will cancel any automatically renewing subscription. I did it once while I had a subscription and it didn't cancel it, but… continue at your own discretion.

    4. Choose the country that you want to switch to and then tap on "Agree" (you'll get another small window, tap on "Agree" again).

5 Then you'll see the Payment Method screen, let's tap on "Back".

6 Tap on "Account" and then "Done". ** As soon as you do this you'll see that the content in the store will change.

    1. Now search for those games or apps that you would like to have. ** You will get the error message "Account not in this store" if you try to download, which is ok.

    2. After you do this, repeat the first 6 steps to go back to your original store.

    3. Now all of those games/apps that you tried to download should be available in your own store and you can get them.

** You should try to Get all of the games or apps that you find interesting before switching back to your store, take notes or screenshots so you can search for them later.

** Prices may vary when you switch back to your store.

I've been able to find some really good games like:

    1. The Witch's Isle (Excellent Point&Click found in Japan. Free)

    2. The Gardens Between (Loved it, one of my favorites. Found in Australia)

    3. The Quest Keeper (Mix between Crossy Road and Minecraft. Found in Netherlands. Free)

    4. Some of these games might be available in other countries, not in mine lol

I hope this also works for you.

Looking for a game Kingdom of Heckfire (read please)

    Posted: 06 May 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I've been playing Kingdom of Heckfire on and off for the last year or so. The thing I like about the game is the way the attacks work (I'd like a bit more in-deptness but it's good as far as it goes), also the fact that you can attack elite mobs with your guild, and get Guild vs. Guild fights etc. make it really nice.

Another thing I enjoy about KoH is the fact that it's not overly p2w, either pay and get stuff done quick, and the social aspect is amazing. So many active people, also every guild is active and has a good playerbase.

Now I'm looking for something new, and refreshing. I'd tried a couple of games, for example Clash or Clans & Castle Clash. But they're both not feeding me.. CoC I got the feeling everyone is already done with the game and I'm just lacking behind. And Castle Clash has zero active players/guilds.

Is there anyone around here that had the same issue and might know a game that will suit me?

    I'm open to try everything!
