Apple TV 4K Dolby Vision issues

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:33 PM PDT

I recently set up a new home theater. 65" Sony OLED a8g, Denon AVR-X2600h , and of course my 5th gen Apple TV 4K.

The TV is set to auto for HDR and the Denon is set to enhanced and I am using 18gb HDR rated HDMI but for some reason I cannot get Dolby Vision or 4k/60hrz HDR to work in the audio and video settings.

    Any input would be appreciated!

Screen dimming on Apple TV app on iPhone 8

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:16 PM PDT

Alright so I downloaded the Apple TV app today after redeeming some digital movies through iTunes. And I noticed when I play a movie the screen gets dark and dims. Now I have auto brightness turned off and brightness maxed out. I checked all settings that could possibly affect this but either they are all turned off or maybe I'm missing something. When I turn my phone off and then turn it back on the movie screen is very bright but as soon as I hit play the screen gets dark again. Is this some sort of bug or glitch? Any help is appreciated. I google and didn't find much

I have a 4K video on my macbook, how can I watch it in 4K on an apple TV?

I have a video rendered in 4K stored on my MacBook, how can I watch it in 4k on an Apple TV? I've read that airplay of local video (not iTunes content) is limited to 1080p.

    Apple TV 4K Popping Noise

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:24 PM PDT

I just bought a new Apple TV 4K 32GB a few days ago and hooked it up to my Hisense 55K3201 TV and there's constant clicking/popping noises even when the TV is idle on the Apple TV menu. I have no sound bar, I'm using the stereo speakers off the TV, and disabled all the TV's built-in audio 'enhancements'. I've also changed the audio settings on the ATV to stereo. I've swapped cables and they don't seem to help.

I was using a Roku Premiere before and never had issues, nor does the Nintendo Switch connected to it have this issue. Everything I've found online for this problem involves a sound bar, which is why I'm asking here as the only equipment is the tv and Apple TV. Thanks!

Should I keep the box Apple TV came in?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:04 PM PDT

The serial number is available in the settings page if I need it. I don't think there's anything else relevant on the back of the box. Did you people keep your box? Should I keep mine?

    Is HDR broken?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:26 AM PDT

It seems like any movie I try to play plays SDR even though it says HDR on Apple TV. I know because I check my HDR TV settings and the gamma is in SDR settings when I play the movie. It's in HDR though when it's on the menu screen.

Macro Blocking (?) w LG TV app vs. Apple TV 4K

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:04 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm very new to this world (bought a new TV for the first time in 12 years), but trying to learn and improve my understanding.

I have an LG B9 OLED (purchased Jan 2020) and have been using the built-in Netflix & Prime apps to stream. I have a Standard Netflix subscription (so it's HD, but not UHD).

I am experiencing dark colors being pixelated/blocky, even when a lighter part of the image appears (to me) very crisp and clear. Example 1 and Example 2.

Is this because I don't have Netflix UHD?
Others have suggested it's because of using the TV's native app, and that it's a bitrate issue. They further suggest that I get an Apple TV 4K, and that this will improve even without upgrading Netflix to UHD.

    1) What is the main cause of this? i.e. do I need 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, etc.?
    2) Do I need to upgrade Netflix?
    3) Do I need an Apple TV 4K?
    4) Could I get away with a Roku Stick+ ($25 and streams 4K/HDR), or do I need something like a Fire Stick 4K (supports 4K UHD, Dolby Vision)?

The reason for considering NOT getting the Apple TV 4K now is that I understand a new one is expected in October.

THANK YOU for helping me fix this and understand what's actually going on :)

Does anyone do: ATV to TV, TV to Soundbar, in that order, with Dolby Atmos? Let me know!

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:58 AM PDT

Everyone on r/Sonos is currently running around screaming because we are all very confused about the new Sonos Arc soundbar's support for Dolby Atmos.

In an ideal world, a soundbar would have more than one HDMI connection and work like this:

Apple TV 4K -> Soundbar, then Soundbar -> TV

But Sonos's new soundbar only has one HDMI port, and needs to get all audio from the TV, as follows:

Apple TV 4K -> TV, then TV -> Soundbar

From what I understand, the Apple TV 4K supports audio from streaming apps which is Atmos over Dolby Digital Plus (not the lossless TrueHD). However, Apple's support page for Dolby Atmos only provides illustrations for plugging the Apple TV directly into the soundbar. It says most TVs don't support Atmos pass-through to a soundbar.

So I have to ask the good people of r/AppleTV whether there is anyone out there who has EITHER:

Apple TV 4K -> TV, then TV -> Soundbar, where the soundbar is connected to an ARC port.

    OR

Apple TV 4K -> TV, then TV -> Soundbar, where the soundbar is connected to an eARC port.

And whether, in either of these scenarios, you are able to get Dolby Atmos playback from apps like Netflix.

    Thanks.
