Posted: 23 May 2020 05:08 PM PDT So I had my wife's 2012 MBP upgraded - new SSD HD, and upped the RAM to 8 GB. There is some browning on the motherboard so, who knows if it will last another month or another year, or five. My question is how long you think this will continue to be supported by Apple in terms of macOS updates? It's listed as a vintage machine now, so I know we are likely on its last days in terms of hardware support of any kind, but hoping there may be a few more years of macOS updates to look forward to at the least! Posted: 23 May 2020 11:09 PM PDT Hi everyone, I just bought a new MacBook pro 16" and migrated from windows to Mac os. Still very new to this system so any tips and tricks will be very much welcomed. I'm using this Macbook with a Dell d6000 docking via USB C and hooking up to 2 x external monitor. So sometimes when I'm not using the MacBook's screen, I'll close it and just stick to 2 external. However, I noticed that if I try to open up the MacBook screen and use it as a third screen, it doesn't show up and only showing a black screen. Unlike Windows where you open the lid and it's auto power up the laptop screen. Am I missing some setting? [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 May 2020 06:14 PM PDT I just graduated HS and am gonna get a mbp for college. I produce pretty heavily in Logic with tons of 3rd party plugins and such. Anyway I'm deciding between either the 2020 13 Inch $1800 model with 16g ram, and the 16 inch $2400 base model. I don't want my computer to be too big to be hauling around to class, but I've been using my moms 2015 15inch machine so I'm worried it'll be weird going to a smaller 13 inch. I'd love the extra power of the 16 inch I just don't want it to be too big for using in class for school work. Any thoughts? [link] [comments]
Spilt water on my MacBook Air... what are the chances of its survival? Posted: 23 May 2020 09:43 PM PDT I spilt about a quarter of a cup of water on my 2015 (refurbished) MacBook Air :( It immediately turned off. I took the charger out pretty fast I think, and after wiping the keyboard and turning it to the side to let the rest of the water spill, I put it in a tent position. One big mistake though was I tried to turn it back on like twice :( . I don't plan on turning it back on in like 48 hours. What're the chances it will survive. I'm a broke 16 yr old I can't afford to get a new one and I rlly need it for online school :(( [link] [comments]
Does running many simultaneous apps destroy the hard disc? Posted: 23 May 2020 07:52 AM PDT Hello MacBook subreddit, my wife had her MacBook pro 2018 (iirc) for just over a year now. It recently died on her as the MacBook does not boot up and shows a question mark on it. The repair people said that it was the SSD that has fried and is not recognised at all, would then need a replacement SSD. Then the repair guy mentions that this can be prevented from not opening so many apps and shutting down the MacBook when not in use for extended periods of time. I do see a ton of open apps on her MacBook all the time, fan constantly running on high and the MacBook feeling hot to the point where she claims she cannot even put it on her lap. So my question is does her heavy usage of her MacBook really lead to such a rapid degradation of the hard disc? I'll like to add she opens alot of chrome, uses Spotify, telegram, WhatsApp , all that basic stuff. Nothing heavy like Photoshop or video editing. [link] [comments]

Question about transferring 44gb of photos from iPhoto to a flash drive Posted: 23 May 2020 01:13 PM PDT I'm trying to transfer all of my iPhoto content to a flash drive. On my 2011 MacBook Pro. I first switched to library in iPhoto and then dragged the iPhoto library in finder to the flash drive. First it said it would take 14 days. I reformatted the flash drive to exFAT and now it says 5 days. I'm going to be using the flash drive on a dell laptop once it's all done. Is there any way to transfer it faster ? Posted: 23 May 2020 07:03 PM PDT Hi, the other day I spilled coffee all over my MacBook, I cleaned it up and turned it off for a little while. Afterwards it was working well, but it has some trouble with charging. That is to say, if I try to charge it just like that it won't work at all, but if I shut it down it will come back and charge, when it comes back half the time it charges perfectly and the other half it will only charger for 3-5 seconds and then briefly disconnect and charge again. This way it beeps a lot which is annoying but not a big problem. Today I was working and lost track of what pedant it was on and it shut down and now will not charge at all. I am a college student and would love to not have to get a new computer, so if there's any good advice on what I should do I would love to hear it. [link] [comments]
Question about running old applications Posted: 23 May 2020 03:02 PM PDT Soo I got the Mac version of program I wanted to use, but the app really old, (early 2006-ish I think) and I read online that it doesn't really like modern software, (neither windows or mac) when I try to run it on my brand new MacBook (purchased In February) it opens up but no screen appears and the application doesn't really start,it just says its open but it isn't really, aee there any fixes ? It's a DMG file soo it should work (at least I assume so) [link] [comments]
Replacing my Macbook Air - how fancy of a Pro do I need? Posted: 23 May 2020 06:43 PM PDT Last year, I bought a 13-inch Macbook Air with 8gb memory and a 1.6 GHz dual-core i5 processor. Unfortunately, it has been very limiting and I commonly max out on memory usage. I am a law student and commonly have 10+ Chrome tabs open, along with Spotify, Microsoft Office, Sophos AV, etc. My background is in CompSci, so I also do some light software work, but nothing super intensive. I'm considering selling my Air and getting a Pro to replace it. I'm leaning toward the 13in model with 16gb memory and the 1.4GHz quad‑core i5 processor. Does this seem like it would be enough for my needs? I think the ram will be enough, but I'm not sure if I need to update the processor (which is expensive). [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 May 2020 06:33 PM PDT I'm looking to get an Apple computer because my old windows Acer is crap. I have other apple products but the one I've never had is a laptop. I'm on Craigslist looking at a couple of used ones. My question is what would you all recommend? - 2015 MacBook Pro 13" running Mojave - 2017 MacBook Air 13" running Catalina Any input you have would be great! Bonus question: - any major differences between OS? [link] [comments]

MacBook Pro 15 inch 2019 battery life Posted: 23 May 2020 05:14 PM PDT Just bought a new MBP with i7 9th gen, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 4GB AMD Radeon Pro 555x. Users of same device - what is the average battery life you're experiencing? Is the battery life severely affected by updating the OS from Mojave to Catalina? [link] [comments]
League of Legends on Macbook Pro 2020 Posted: 23 May 2020 10:06 AM PDT If anyone plays LoL on their Macbook Pro 2020, could you share your game quality (fps w/ graphic settings)? I am thinking to purchase a Macbook Pro but I am unsure which one to buy in between the 8th gen model and the 10th gen model. The gaming performance on the MBP would really be the deciding factor so if anyone plays LoL it would really be helpful if you shared your fps + graphic settings. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 May 2020 12:07 PM PDT I'm reaching the end of my rope trying to deal with this. It started out as one of those pieces of malware that would set Yahoo Safe Search as the default search engine on Chrome, showing up as 'akamaihd.net.' At first I was able to change my default search engine back to what it was, delete the extension then wipe my history and delete my cookies, and all was fine. Then it came back and nothing has worked since - going into manage search engines and trying to remove it from there doesn't work as its disabled the drop down menu, furthermore it disabled trying to set something else as your search engine. Doing the aforementioned with my history/cookies hasn't worked, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome to no affect, and it comes up on Safari when I've used that as well. I've tried searching for a file on my computer named Safe Search or similar and found nothing, and I've tried quitting the SearchFunctionDaemon via the activity monitor but it always comes back. Next, I bought BitDefender as my anti-virus and have done several system scans, and although it finds threats and deletes them it hasn't solved the problem. Finally, it all got worse when I updated my OS to Catalina. Now a window keeps popping up saying 'SearchFunctionDaemon will damage your computer,' with the options to report it or show it in Finder. Nothing happens when I click either option and the window just pops up again a few seconds later. And to bring down the final nail in the coffin, the virus sporadically opens Safari by itself, as well as the extensions window on Safaris preferences to try and make me enable it. I'm running out of ideas and wish I'd have invested in Antivirus years before I actually got it. Any help that anyone can suggest I'd massively appreciate... [link] [comments]

Does the Macbook Pro 16 i9 still have performance issues? Posted: 23 May 2020 07:46 PM PDT Im looking to get a 16 pro and really need 1tb, my options are either the Base model + 1tb or the i9 version that comes with 1tb. My use case is general computing and multiasking plus specifically running bootcamp to play Call of Duty Warzone. My main concern is that I've read that the i9 version (at least initially) had issues with the CPU and GPU being 'too' powerful (in bootcamp) and pushing the machine too hard that it ends up throttling and being slower than the base model when it comes to gaming. Does anyone know if this is still the case with the latest AMD drivers? Is anyone able to run Warzone at +60 FPS consistently without frame drops on the i9 model? Price isnt the biggest factor here but in my local market the price difference is $3749 vs $4079 for the base + 1tb vs i9 which makes it hard to make a decision. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 May 2020 01:20 PM PDT Hey everyone! I tried posting a few days ago, but my submission got deleted (probably b/c I was posting from a new account hah). Anyways, I'm trying again b/c I keep going back and forth b/w my options and need help. I'll be using the MB for heavy web browsing, streaming (netflix, prime video, sports games - whenever they come back, etc.), and occasional Zoom meetings/MS word usage. I'd like the laptop to last me a good while (I used my last MB for 7.5 years before it died on me for good). I've read and watched several reviews, but I can't seem to make up my mind. Which model/configuration do you think would suit my needs best? Thanks in advance for your advice. [link] [comments]

Audio input when lid closed using second display? Posted: 23 May 2020 07:57 AM PDT I've been using the audio input (voice recognition) on my 2019 13" MacBook Pro without any problem. I recently bought a second display and have been using it with the MBP's lid closed (so that notifications appear in the big display instead of the little one, etc.). However, it doesn't receive audio input when the lid is closed, even when the earbuds are plugged in. I was considering buying an earphone/mic headset, but if the system isn't going to recognize the audio when the lid's closed, there's no point. This isn't the biggest inconvenience in the world (I could just keep the lid open), but if there's a workaround, I'd like to know about it. [link] [comments]
Photo or Video Editors using Macbook, What do you think? Posted: 23 May 2020 07:14 AM PDT I'm considering getting a MacBook Air 13" (2020 version) specs at 8gb RAM and 128 SSD storage, 8th gen i5 core intel processor. Since I currently can't afford the Pro, I'm thinking of this as one of my options. I would be using it for minimal photo and video editing. Are the specs for the laptop okay to handle any of that?
